The barista behind the counter had a warmth that felt genuine, not performed, and remembered my order before I finished saying it. The walls near the register are covered in antique plates, dozens of them, mismatched patterns climbing toward the ceiling, and it's the exact decorating instinct my grandmother had, minus the shag carpet and the smell of mothballs. I sat under a plate with a rooster on it and felt strangely at home.
