pancakes, disappointing
Aisha G.

The food was pretty okay, a little overpriced and had to pay $3 for ice cream. Customer service was appalling, the staff were rude, messed up the order multiple times, and the rooms were echoey and had no music playing. Disappointed, I will not be returning. Save your money and go to a local cafe or get pancake mixture from coles.

Two eggs, two hashbrowns, two pancakes and supposed to be two sausage but I got Kranski sausage. It was soooo delicious. And the service was good. We are visiting from US but while we are here we will be coming back.

Well. We're here again. I love pancakes. LOVE them. but for some reason, i just can't love the pancake kitchen, my friends all have a special place in their hearts for it, but I don't. Maybe its the over priced menu, the slow service or the credit card surcharge (really, its 2016 people) maybe its the dated drab decor, uneven flooring and broken jukebox. maybe its the staff that have forgotten how to smile or pretend they care. and can someone please explain why he pancakes come in a bowl?

The Blueberry pancake

I'm sure this place has been around for a while, but I've only dined here a couple times and both times have been close to midnight- usually after a show finishing late. Late night cravings after an evening in the city The Pancake Kitchen seems to be the first thing that comes to mind. Their menu is quite vast with more than just pancake choices. They offer up things like waffles and crepes in different dish styles, as well as cafe or restaurant style meals like steaks, salads, salt and pepper squid. There was a pancake dish were you could order a steak, salad and chips on top of a pancake. Something different. I didn't get a great look at their drinks menu but I did see traditional American diner style shakes and iced coffees/chocolates etc. I can't remember seeing if they were licensed or not. I ordered pancakes with blueberries which was off the menu. They had a few diagrams of some of their meals shown on the menu and this was one of them. The serving was somewhat smaller than what I imagined it to be, but it was still amazing. It was quite generous with delicious blueberries, fresh tasting fluffy pancakes, with a dollop of ice cream on top. You're served with maple syrup on the table in a canister so one can drown their dish with as much as they like. This place is great for groups, in fact probably more ideal. There's a lot of table space and a few different rooms. The service has been fairly prompt and friendly as far as what I've seen. And I honestly haven't seen anything to be disappointed about. So if you haven't already this place is definitely somewhere worth trying out anytime of the day.

feasting it up for late night

Egads! This brings back memories. I was in Adelaide for a week and this was one of those classic places I had to visit for late night food. It's like your classic 24 hour diner. Stick to your ribs food like sausages, bacon, eggs, and the like. It's solid fare - not amazing, but solid. Be prepared to people watch. There was one old guy that brought in his own boombox that he was softly singing to. There was a table with a very irate drunk woman and a calm rational man. Poor guy.

After reading bad reviews I had low expectations but never tried the food After finding our own seat and looking the the menu I got up but rather shocked to receive table service which I think is pretty cool We ordered and was told the price of $30 for 2 waffles a hot chocolate and iced chocolate. Much cheaper than any other dessert place I've been too We revived our drinks first and OMG they were amazing Next the waffles They were nice and crispy like they're meant to be, topped with delicious soft ice cream and flavoured sauce of our choice Definitely going back but maybe during the day instead of late at night

The name says it all. If you love pancakes, then this is where you need to go. The pancake kitchen is open 24/7, so it caters to people with pancake cravings at any time of the day. They have a large selection of savoury and dessert pancakes, and both styles are done extremely well. The farmer's breakfast is an absolute must-have, but it's the sausages, eggs and bacon that steal the show on this dish. For dessert, the strawberry jubilee is a great choice. Pair one of these with a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and you're in flavour country. I'm not too sure if they still have their all-you-can-eat pancake promotions anymore, but that thing was pointless. Who wants plain old pancakes anyway? Do yourself a favour and go all out by picking something extravagant from the menu.

They have 135 crepes on the menu, which is why it is a good idea to include the menu number when ordering, as some of the names are quite similar. There are plastic displays and TV screens near the register showing just some of what they have to offer. The full menu all looks appetizing, with both sweet and savoury crepes available. I tried the prosciutto and cheese, thinking: "I like prosciutto, I like cheese. This will probably taste just like a pizza, right?" It didn't, but it wasn't half bad. Being prosciutto and cheese, the ingredients obviously blended together nicely, but the crepe itself had a sweet, fortune-cookie-like taste to it. Well it WAS a crepe after all. So all in all it was... Different. But don't get turned off just yet. I also tried a chocolate crepe with melted dark Hershey's chocolate and nutella. It was heavenly; I can't even begin to describe. To make matters worse for my gym seshes that week, it was topped with custard and strawberries. The seating arrangements are so cute, with colourful booths and tables filling the store. While it sort of feels like a daycare or the kids' section of a fast food chain, all those bright colours made me happy! So did the prices, ranging from $4-$7 for a crepe - nice.

A few places buck the trend though, and make really high quality food. The Big Table is one of these, as is Market St. While not located in the markets, this cafe is directly across the road from the main Gouger St entrance on a street called Market Street, which makes it easy to find. The kitchen is open and visible, so you can see everything being made fresh and the bread is baked on site. There are fridges of cakes, dairy and other treats to take home; so it is part cafe, part gourmet deli/bakery. I have been there for breakfast twice and both times have had their poached eggs with salmon and a cold drip coffee with ice and agave. Definitely recommend that combo. Like the Big Table in the markets, they also do muesli and other tasty options - which aren't limited to breakfasts. Needless to say it has haunted my dreams since, so today after a hard workout my husband and I biked over for lunch. The first thing that strikes you while approaching from Kitchener Street is the lush, inviting covered wrap around porch; there is plentiful and adequately spaced tables located here (so as not to be forced to overhear unwanted convos). Next, upon entering this clean and tidy cottage you will notice three separate distinct seating areas: the main dining area, a smaller dining area tucked away by the kitchen and pastry counter, and a delightful and welcoming covered deck. We were promptly greeted by one of the friendly staff and seated straight away. Tap water, glasses, and menus were waiting at the table and after an appropriate amount of time our order was taken and special requests confirmed. This place is really busy but it seems well managed; the staff is very attentive without being intrusive. As we waited for our order we noticed the bustling and efficient staff who worked like a well oiled machine - dirty dishes were quickly removed from tables, additional carafes of tap water were dropped off without being asked for, and patrons seemed relaxed, very happy, and satisfied. By meals' end we, too, were among those happy people. My husband ordered a sandwich that I struggle to recall the name ;( it was a hearty sandwich made from perfectly toasted sourdough, grilled chicken breast meat, swiss cheese, garlic aioli, a mix of tender and flavourful greens, and crispy bacon. I ordered the smashed avocado with feta on the same delightfully prepared sourdough. It, too, came with a generous portion of greens. We could not be happier with our newfound neighbourhood brekkie place. AND there is a coffee loyalty card to boot!

I tried to ignore it (ETC) - I couldn't get to the city for breakfast, heck, I struggled getting to the bay (2 min away). But the urge wouldn't go away, I was hungry. Finally, this past Tuesday, after a successful visit with my surgeon, and the banishing of my AirCast Moon-boot forever (whisper it quietly) I did it. I went to ETC. To be honest, It really wasn't what I expected, from the cafe's website, I'd pictured something a little more clean cut, a little more yuppie. To say I was pleasantly suprised by the super comfortable quirky cafe (a big red wall, blackboards, wooden furniture) interior is an understatement. I was stoked, I felt at home. The menu is well set out and easy to read, however actually picking what I wanted was the hardest decision of my life. To put it in perspective, deciding to have surgery on my achilles and put my life in the doctors hands took me less than 4 seconds. Choosing my breakfast from ETC - easily 8+ minutes. I eventually settled for the Big Brekky option, even though it's usually the last thing I would get. I just wanted to try as much as I could (there was actually a solid spread of tomatoes, mushies and spinach on it). I attended with my darling sister (who actually disowned me and referred to me as 'a friend' in her review of ETC - OUCH), who ordered the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Our food was delicious. The service was very friendly, the staff always smiling and circulating the room to clear tables and make sure everything was alright. Everything was sweet, a great comfy cafe, delicious food and good staff. Oh and we only had to wait like 10mins for our meals. What could possibly make it better... A Chocolate milkshake - in a traditional chilled milkshake glass - with a sweeeeeeeeeet rolled paper barbershop style straw. It was delicious. For any place to put this much effort into a chocolate milkshake is ludicrous, but it's also a tipping point that ensured I wouldn't forget my brekky at ETC easily. Five eskimo's.

I sometimes host Meetup.com events & this was a place that for a reservation of 6 people did not ask me for a holding card or fee (because let's face it, you cannot predict if a sudden circumstance means a person or two can't make it, & the venue could easily fill available seats as its a popular spot). The only draw back of the restaurant was it was a little noisy, making it a little hard to hear the more softly spoken of us). I would suggest some sound proofing, even something simple as one of the ladies accompanying me suggested, such as curtains hung from /draped along the ceiling to reduce echo off the ceiling. However it was still cosy & had such a great atmosphere that this would not deter me in future. On to the breakfast/brunch menu... This was filled with all the regular big breakfast items but with gorgeous gourmet twists... Think smoked salmon & scrambled eggs on toast with Beetroot relish, or tomato & ricotta on toast, or poached eggs on warm garlic yoghurt on toast served with sautéed mushrooms. The other big bonus was the fruits & grains menu options, which were trendy, unusual & sumptuous. I had the fresh ricotta & banana with crushed pistachios & walnuts, drizzled with honey. On to the drinks menu... There were the standard drinks, the slightly unusual or more refined options (think masala chai), and finally more unusual options like the fruit tingle smoothie (sounds odd but was amazing, consisting of orange juice, milk, banana, honey & orange sorbet). I would highly recommend this venue.
