La Lorientaise Crêperie - A pair of lattes

This place was packed on Saturday morning when I made my inaugural visit to my local creperie! What…read morea fantastic welcome to the neighbourhood. This creperie only opened its newly renovated doors on Wednesday. We waited about 10 minutes for a table to become available and we then grabbed a seat at the communal table in the middle of the room. My partner n I ordered 2 lattes which were lovely, they use Fleurieu Milk, and a sweet and a savoury crepe. Our savoury option was the sausage, onion, egg and cheese crepe. The onions were lightly caramelised and the whole dish had been kissed with butter. Our sweet option was banana, chattily, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It was very nice. I believe they make their ice creams on site. The batter for both the sweet n savoury crepe are different, with savoury being much darker. They also have imported French cider, which is meant to be great with a savoury crepe, as well as a selection of local beers too. I was very impressed on the quality of our meal and service on a day which was obviously very busy and a little bit stressful for the staff of this new local haunt.

Want a taste of The Continent without leaving the comfort of the East End of Adelaide? If so this…read moreis the answer to your prayers! Nestled in the quiet block of Grenfell St. just steps from Rymill Park this gem is quite abuzz with crepe making energy; there are two types gallettes (savory) and sweet to choose from. we chose gallettes to share, one La Traditionelle ($11.5: ham, egg sunny side up, and swiss cheese) and one Saint Malo ($14.5: ham, sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, basil, and olive oil). You can ask for any egg preparation, I chose scrambled. Opened for long hours each day they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The tiny bistro is a powerhouse of excellent, friendly customer service. It is adequately staffed with friendly counter help who care about your dining experience. The three times I have been there in the last month indicates consistent excellence and quick, though not hurried service. There are well prepared croissants (prepared in site daily) in addition to an authentic pain au chocolate. I plan to eat my way across their dessert case and will keep you posted on my progress. TWO THUMB UP - this is a 'must do' destination, especially when in need of respite from the day-to-day stresses of life. Treat yourself to a French stay-cation without leaving the CBD.

Staff are very friendly and service is efficient. They are always accomodating of my daughter and I do recommend booking a table during busy periods as it can be difficult to get a seat. One thing you will find when you go there, apart from being transported straight to Paris, is the incredible range of crepe options, including both sweet and savoury. Well worth a visit if you are in the East End!

Sir Cafe - Strange decor....

Ok, it happened. Yes, I finally tried the world famous Raindrop Cake. I have actually been waiting…read moreto try this wondrous thing for a while now. I came across it on instagram and was intrigued. What a weird and delicate looking creation. I was so excited to hear that Sir Café decided to be the first place to bring this weird dessert to the streets of Adelaide. So, what the heck is it? Well, it is one of those crazy food trends from Brooklyn, New York. It's a variation of a traditional Japanese dish that people have been eating for years made from Agar Agar and completely calorie free and vegan. Well, I don't know if the sauce and soybean powder is calorie free. What does taste like? It does not have much of a flavour at all. Maybe just a slight sweetness. I think they add sugar to the Agar Agar mix. It's kind of like jelly. However, it is a little more subtle or delicate. However, when you mix it with the sugar cane sauce and soybean powder, it is a whole different thing. It's very sweet and have a sesame flavour from the powder. It's not offensive. Just unusual and for someone into food they might like to try it just to say you have. Do you know what I think this dish has going for it? It's pretty. It looks very appealing and it also creates an unusual experience with food. For that it wins. I think I might have enjoyed this more with less of the sugar cane sauce. It was super sweet. It made me a little thirsty. But, it was an interesting experience that I would recommend for the adventurous. Just don't go expecting too much apart from saying.... "oooooo that's weird". Then maybe a chuckle or two. Oh, the final thing to mention is that Sir Cafe needs to think about replacing the glowing tables with something a little more classy like the couches. One of the most important reasons is it is hard to take pictures of your pretty dessert and read the menus.

Soooooo BTS on Gouger disappeared but obviously the spot still needed some sweetness so Sir moved…read morein. Let's just get right to the point, I gave this 3 stars because of what I ate, not because of the service or decor at all. The decor is a tad tacky, it appears they have kept that boudoir feeling BTS had and then added some really strange, tacky, cheap LED light tables. I digress, we wanted the raindrop cake (clear arga arga jelly drop) but one the last had no idea what it was even though it was on the menu, she then pretended she knew what we were on about and said it wasn't available. To this day we still don't know if it was available or if she still just had no idea what was on the menu. We ordered one of the various toast options and the matcha fondant cake. Heck the toast was massive and delicious and if you want to have your cheat day with carbs and sugar and greatness go to sir an order it. Drool worthy. Was so happy with the toast. The matcha fondant cake was powdery and kind of gross. So my three stars are literally provided just for the amazing toast which is the only reason I will return several times over just for all the various toast options and then feel like I need to diet by not eating for 3 months. Could win 5 stars with decor and service and that damn raindrop cake being in. *****UPDATE****** So in regards to the lack of raindrop cake we organised a Yelp catch up to all experience it. Due to being pre planned they were well aware of what we wanted. We all received and paid of the breast implant looking raindrop cake. It is a sight to the eyes, but I must say I have experienced it and I am now done and do not need it again. It is a clear water made jelly orb, which is then surrounded by a dark sugar syrup which tasted like brown sugar to me, so so sickly sweet I needed several glasses of water with it. On the other side a roasted soy bean flour which was delicious!!! It was tasted like roasted sesames, if I had the hindsight i would've asked for the sugar syrup on the side and a lot more of the flour. All in all good experience but one and done. No more raindrop cake for me.

I was a little lack lustre about returning to Elephant Walk so soon, but with Eggless closed and a quick ring around of dessert bars at 11:40 on a Friday night it seemed they were the only choice open. After a few awkward moves to actually make it into the booths (they can be low down and a bit squishy) two out of our party of four decided on the peanut choc waffles. Ohhhhhh my. Elephant Walk gets onto my dessert bar favourites with these alone. I still wish they'd vamp up the rest of their menu, but at least now I have a favourite to keep coming back for.

A table out the back (eg. outside) was offered which took a little bit of convincing until the waiter mentioned the word 'heater'. Seated around our table under the stars, enjoying the radiant warmth of the gas heater, we certainly didn't feel like we were sitting in our 2nd option! The vegan menu was well-suited to my being lactose-free & the multitude of waffles/banana split/etc was indeed appreciated by the other three. I always love the multitude of tea options & the staff always serve everything with a smile. A great place to chill & wind down and leaving the previous dining establishment to enjoy dessert here invariably makes the night last longer!
