Located on Interleith Row, a short walk away from the Edinburgh Royal Botanical Garden. After touring the gardens all morning, The Orchard was a welcome stop for a pint and a bite to eat. The servers were busy with the lunch crowd, but managed to be friendly and helpful. Our pints and food arrived without delay. The pint of Deuchars IPA was creamy & refreshing. We tried two ciabatta sandwiches. Our first selection was Brie, bacon, cranberry & mixed greens. Very tasty and satisfying. Our second selection was the pulled pork with an apple relish, which was good, but I preferred the Brie ciabatta. Nice atmosphere, clean and tidy, tasty food and helpful servers. What else could one ask for from a pub? Give it a try after touring the gardens, you won't be disappointed.

To be honest, this is either 3.5 or 4 stars, not sure but it serviced the need so I'll go with 4 stars as the service was nice and most of what we had was good. Stopped here on the way to the botanical gardens, a perfect location for catching tourists! The selection of ales is a bit on the low side, but they do have a variety of lagers and bigger name brand things. So if that is what you are looking for, this place will work. I had the bacon burger which was actually very good. The DC had the smoked mackerel and the soup of the day. The soup was a winner, but no point in describing it since it will be different by the time you go there. The smoked mackerel was tasty but the issue was with the bread and the greens that came with it. The fish spread was good and smoky but the bread that came with it was a bit over done. The ratio of spread to bread is a bit off and you'll end up eating the spread straight when the bread runs out. Service was good, as I said. Just a little off to make a solid 4 stars, but worth a try and see what you think. Might be there on a day where they don't burn the toast.

Enjoyed ten days in Scotland. This is one of the top three of our best meals. The steak pie is renowned here and for good reason. Comfort food at its best!! DH and I split this meal and it was plenty for a lunch stop after venturing through the Royal botanical gardens. Friendly staff, good service & atmosphere. Highly recommend! A short walk from the gardens as well.

A great pub. Real ales, good food and comfy Chesterfield Queen Anne's to read your paper in. Bliss.

We went there on a Saturday, early afternoon. The Orchard is a very cosy and welcoming place, with a laid back atmosphere. Waitresses and manager offered a very good and friendly customer service. The pub was rather busy with a couple of big tables with parents and well behaved toddlers & babies celebrating someone's birthdays. Because of that, our food took longer than usual to arrive at our table, but it was understandable. I got the Steak and Merlot Pie with hand cut chips. My friends got the Ciabatta sandwich with ham, cheese and pickles accompanied with crisps, a 6.5 out of 10 treat as they told me. The Steak and Merlot Pie flavours were properly balanced and you can enjoy the red wine aftertaste. Also it was filled with abundant chucks of tender beef, which was a plus. All washed down with some Staropramen beer. All in all a very positive experience and, yes, we'll be back.

Anyhow the OH persuaded me to give it a shot for a quick drink to shelter from the rain whilst we deliberated on a venue for dinner. I'm glad he did. In addition to a decent selection of craft beers, there's a hefty cocktail menu. I tried the Ginger Tom Collins & it hit the spot. Just the right amount of ginger to pack a punch but not enough to be overpowering. The OH had a pint of draft beer & seemed happy enough. The low ceiling means it gets noisy even if it's not packed. There was a stag do, 2 birthday parties and hen group as well as some other folks. It was only just possible to hold a convo at normal volume & be heard. There's a decent sized courtyard out the back too but it was too wet & cold to try it out. I'd definitely visit again but maybe on a week night when it might be a little less noisy.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

A quick Google search later, we decided to add this to our "must visit while in Edinburgh" list. This wasn't our anniversary restaurant, of course, but we knew we needed to dine here at least once. It was a long walk from our hotel, but it was a nice way to see parts of the city that we wouldn't normally have gotten to. The restaurant itself is nestled in the basement (or downstairs) of a cute building. It's small in there, but they're very good at maximizing the space they're given. We settled in at a teeny-tiny table off to the side and swiftly ordered a couple of pints. The menu is very straightforward: you're either getting a meat and cheese plate, just a cheese plate, or pates. We decided to share the Mixed Meat & Cheese platter. We figured that we'd snack and drink some Scottish beer, then head off into the night to find our "real" dinner. Thing is, though, that combo platter filled us the heck up. The waitress came out with the meat and cheese plate and a box of bread, oatcakes and crackers, and my husband and I had a "where is all this going?" moment. But our pro-waitress dropped the plate on the table and popped the bread box into a shelf on the wall next to us - a shelf that neither of us ever even noticed, to be honest. The meat and cheese selections were delicious and paired really well together. Kind of hidden away on that shelf (holding the bread and oatcakes) were a couple chutney jars. That chutney - lots of fruit pieces and complex flavors - brought a lot to the cheeses. We really did love the food, the surroundings, the beer and the staff. I wish we had something like this back home.

The minute we found the door off the little lane on Rose Street, there was an air of mystery... exactly what you hope for from a "detective agency" style speakeasy. The service was absolutely welcoming. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and even at 9p, mid week (when you might expect things to be winding down), the place was comfortably busy but not packed, but full enough to feel alive. Drinks menus came in little "confidential" envelopes, which instantly added to the fun. We ordered several cocktails that evening, and every drink was carefully crafted and flavorful, smooth and topped off with warm hospitality. I honestly did not have one bad cocktail. If I were to highlight a few things from our night - I came away loving the atmosphere, the attention to detail, and the general ease at which we were treated which is exactly what I wanted out of a night out in Edinburgh. Once inside (you'll have to knock to get in), you'll find a cool little lounge with great cocktails, chill music, and amiable bartenders. We were surprisingly the only ones in there around 9 pm on a Friday night, which we thought was odd (as did the bartenders), but it meant we got to hang out with them and shoot the shit (meeting bartenders from all over the world is one of my favorite hobbies). Besides the fact that both were into motorcycles (and one came to Edinburgh once and immediately backed up his bags and moved over from Italy - props), we found out that they could make a mean cocktail. We, of course, started on menu, but wanted to see if they could do any variations, which they not only did, but nailed: "do you like bitter or sweet" - bitter "Floral or not so much" - surprise me "base?" - gin Dunno what it was called, but it was one of the nicest gin drinks I had in a town that is crazy for gin at the moment. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good cocktail place, the ambiance is on point and the drinks are superb.
