The London Road Open Market is a handy resource for those living in the area, and even worth a bit of a travel to as it's one of the (if not the) cheapest places for fruit and veg I know of in Brighton. However, as Sarah-Jane B. said, the place has been left abit neglected, with lack of support and customers being pulled away by the many London Road area supermarkets and discount stores. It's sad to see; take a walk round the market today and you'll find few customers and many empty stalls. The place still remains popular with me, as it's one of the few places in Brighton where you can find good value independent food sellers - like cheese, bacon and eggs, and fish. There's also a fabric stall and second hand bike shop which are worth checking out. All in all the Open Market looks neglected and in need of rescuing - get yourself there if you live locally!

The Open Market is a great local resource and a brilliant way to support independent traders....when they're there! As others have observed, the market seems to be in decline- the vibrant fruit and veg stalls that used to populate the Ditchling Rd end of the Market seem to have vanished without trace, which is disappointing, as they were pretty damn cheap! There is still the fruit and veg place on the other side though. In fact, business is much more concentrated at the London Rd end now, which I suppose is the busiest area. It's a shame though, as many stalls have been left empty and the bustling market atmosphere has all but vanished. There are still some great vendors in business though...the bike place is brilliant for repairs or picking up some cheap secondhand wheels- the guy who runs the place is also an absolute legend and his daughter was Sarah in Neighbours- seriously, ask him about it! Despite its fading identity, the Open Market is still a good place to pick up fish, meat and other local produce. Be sure to check out Pulse too- it's a great little hidden away wholefoods shop. Apparently the Open Market is set to be 'regenerated', with design plans currently underway. Watch this space...I'm worried that Brighton might be about to lose another of it's wonderful original features!

This small local market is found in between the level and the opening to London Road high street. The stalls vary in size and offer fresh fruit and veg, meat & fish, organic produce. cheese and even a bicycle stall! The produce is fresh and of a good quality and prices are quite a bit cheaper than that of your local store - be it Sainsbury's or Somerfield. The market doesn't get too busy and everybody working is helpful and more than happy to help! Which i find quite rare in retail! If your thinking to cook an exotic thai meal or would just like your food fresh and local for a change i suggest a visit!

The ethos is basically local local local! It's a really lovely alternative place to pick up freshly made bread (from the Lighthouse bakery) and organic fruit and veg. At the moment there is a stall selling and renting (!) live Xmas trees in pots and there is also a great selection of Christmassy gift ideas. You can even pick up sustainably sourced logs and kindling for lovely winter open fires. The market is open every day except Sunday and if you live in the Hanover area it's a really great resource. Even if you live further afield, Muesli Mountain is worth a trek. It is an inspired project with a lovely atmosphere- one of those little gems that makes you so grateful you live in Brighton.

Run by a team of Hanover residents, it's an open market that aims to provide other locals with a space to meet, chat and learn how to be more sustainable. There's fresh organic fruit, salad and vegetables from local farms and allotments, gorgeous bread from Lighthouse Bakery and store cupboard essentials like pasta, rice, flour and cereals. They also sell local seeds and plants, cleaning products and Ecover refills. As a girl with a sweet-tooth, my only grumble is the lack of fresh and tasty, locally baked cakes!

Arts and crafts lovers should note, there's usually a couple of stalls selling ceramics, photographs and canvases too, though my personal tip is to check out the different jewellery stalls. I've picked up some lovely rings and bracelets here over the years. Tourists should note, the market is open weekends and bank holidays only from March to early June but usually runs seven days a week throughout the summer holiday season. The fact it's open air and there's no electronics, means it's cash only and everything is sold-as-seen. Happy browsing!

That little ditty perhaps goes most part of the way to describing how I feel about the West Pier market. The perfect balance between touristy paintings of west pier at sunset and genuinely interesting bits and bobs, this little set of stalls has a distinctly festival feel about it. Last summer, while sauntering through the stalls on a lazy hung over afternoon, I picked up a peaked US military style hat that proved invaluable for the rest of the year. It cost me a mere five pounds and after a bit of customising with some big scissors it looked awesome. So awesome in fact that when at the end of the year I went away travelling, Yelp's very own Mike F took care of it for me and made it his own. No more hat for me, he looks rather good in it too. It's not all cheap hats and hangovers though. There's a stall selling a brilliant selection of second hand books - ideal if that's your thing but you don't want to spend your summer in the dark basement bookshops of Brighton. There are also some really beautiful jewellery stalls that give the place the festival atmosphere I mentioned earlier.

On Tuesdays, a fresh fruits and vegetables market is located outside Falmer House. Everything is really high quality, and the selection is quite vast: guava, mango, aubergines, avocado, bean sprouts, several types of apples and pears....It's the exact opposite of the produce usually found on campus. Prices are really reasonable...Sort of between Sainsbury's and Asda prices, if that helps. A cucumber is 50p. Four apples for £1. Romaine lettuce £1.25...etc. Now, the frustrating part. I'm not sure how long the market has been around, but each week it reminds me of a family setting up a yard sale for the first time EVER. I think it officially opens at 11am (people are shopping by that time, anyway) but signs and prices aren't up, the cash registers may or may not be ready, and there is always a shortage of change. Two weeks in a row my £5 note has been rejected. Rejected! I waited until noon yesterday, and the lady working the cash register was unable to find £3 in change. Someone had gone to get some, she told me. Possibly she could have gone before opening the market? Alright, I feel my frustration is returning so... In summary - fresh and delicious fruit and veg. Reasonable prices. Go late. Bring change.

Over time however, I discovered that the value really wasn't that good as most of the food tends to rot pretty quickly, and unfortunately the prices have risen considerably faster than inflation. I still come here occasionally but the 20 minute queues and a lack of change for any form of note means that the market doesn't really offer any form of convenience. Still, it is useful addition to the campus shopping experience. As somebody who no longer lives on campus however, I'll stick with my local green grocer, or Sainsburys...
