I can't be more happy. I love this place! I have been a slug for the past 12 years. Living in New…read moreEngland isn't a good thing for me. I don't like to ski and I have had a strong dislike of gyms. Walking up the stairs to check it out, I heard the familiar sounds of a gym - the slamming clang of a weight dropping and the driving beat of music. At this point, I am thinking, what the heck am I doing? I got to the top of the stairs and was so pleasantly surprised. It is clean, bright, doesn't smell, and is not at all intimidating. I love the machines! Much better than what I remember from past experiences. The members are all different ages, and very nice, considerate people. And then there is Marion. I have never had a personal trainer - always found it too expensive. She is reasonably priced and it has made an entire difference in my experience. I am getting so much more out of the gym than I would if I hadn't had a trainer. She teaches me how to properly use each machine. I haven't used her to push me - not yet. Marion is very knowledgeable, is a natural teacher and knows how to encourage me. Before I conclude, I need to mention Louise, the owner. She truly loves what she does and has built a business that she should be proud of. I am grateful for having such an awesome gym. Don't delay. Join this place!

So I came here using my 1 week free pass to check it out before I commit to a year (or 2) membership. There are two levels with the changing rooms and spin room on the lower level with the main check in desk. The upper level has the fitness room, cardio equipment and weights. This is a fairly small local place but is in clean decent shape. They do have up to date equipment and offer some good classes. The spin classes in the morning at 6 are full with a wait list. Although it is hard to get in the fact that it is full speaks for itself. I myself haven't taken a class and am thinking about it but augh 6 am to be on a bike. These folks really mean it! I've taken the step class and the Zumba and they were awesome. I def got my cardio work out. I am still need to test run a few others but this place may work. It is close to the commuter rail so getting off the train and right over for a work out is doable (not sure if this is a word). They do have a pool although I am not a swimmer. The weight room is a bit small but they have the basics and there are a mix of people at different times. Not sure I am finding the right workout group yet. I am looking for an energetic group of folks to help get me motivated and kick me into gear to get off my butt. I am not sure this is it. They will give you a lock for the lockers when you give them your keys and you can use the supplies such as hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, shower soap too since all are fully stocked and right in the showers. It is clean and private. There is plenty of parking and the area seems safe and fairly well lit. I am still looking...

The General Manager is really nice and helpful any time I have spoken with her. Cons: It's dirty, they only clean twice a week. I have only seen the cleaners (who are very nice and outsourced) while I am working out. Let's just call it a surface clean... A lot of early morning members do not clean anything after they use it which is somewhat disgusting. There is a member who constantly hacks on the machine next to you without covering their mouth with the free provided (nasty) face cloth size towels. He literally hacks out onto the machine (and you). Other members saw my disgust and told me he's been doing this for a long time and if you confront him he will get nasty. This morning the place was a disaster. No clean towels, dirty towels all over the floor and equipment, and wmpty water bottles scattered. I actually wish it were nicer because it is so convenient and I like the staff I've met and people as well. 3 stars was for convenience, the rest is pretty deplorable

I come here mainly on weekends, when my home Y closes way the heck too early (4pm vs 7pm here)…read more I'd say that about 70-80% of their equipment is fine. Lots of free weights and strength machines. The highlight is the huge, high-ceilinged (30-40ft?) functional fitness space that features a turf area, a sled, kettlebells, plyo boxes, plyo smash balls, a do-it-all calisthenics multi-station that includes weighted pulleys, dip and pullup and monkey bars, a free hanging real boxing bag (nice angled uppercut bag that's just the right weight to make you "dance" to avoid the swing back, yet forgiving enough that you can punch it without gloves without risking a broken wrist or bruised knuckles), a pair of Assault bikes and treadmills, a Concept rower, some meh Schwinn stationary bikes (more on that later), and two full squat cages with plenty of plates and barbells. So, what about the other 20-30%, you ask? Well, their cardio machines range from so-so to unusably lousy. All the treadmills are Precor, which are a clear step down from the Life Fitness TMs most Ys have: smaller uglier fuzzy screens with spotty internet connection that can freeze up in the middle of a workout, noisier and less stable platform. The stationary bikes are a mix of Precor (typical mediocre gym bike with crap ergonomics where you feel like you're on a creaky toy bike pedaling against some barbaric pad not magnetic resistance) and Espresso (video-gaming type bike clearly designed to seduce ADD teenagers or lazy af adults) and the horrible Schwinn bikes (just as bad as most home exercise bikes, you can understand why people mostly use them as clothes hangers). Please please please can you guys get at least a few KEISER bikes? We know you can have decent taste in cardio machines because you kept your CONCEPT rowers instead of choosing some oversized gym-brand rowers which look impressive but have similarly lousy ergonomics. Oh and they have non-mechanical Assault brand treadmills which nobody uses because they are brutal on the knees, too narrow and unstable. I don't know who was in charge of choosing the cardio equipment, but that person needs to be put to work cleaning the bathrooms or something more appropriate! The other major gripe I have is their sauna --- it's spacious and new and pretty, but who in the hell decided to have only ONE row of seating? Completely idiotic, folks: did you not pass seventh grade Life Science, where they teach you that heat RISES, and that's why all real saunas have TWO levels of seating, with the 2nd one being a good 4-5 feet off the ground so that you get the full benefit of the heat in the room? Here you have to STAND on the damned low benches if you want to get a decent sweat in ... the sauna thermometer reads 170F but if you're sitting down you'd be lucky to get 140-150F, which is useless. (The sauna of the Melrose YMCA has the same idiotic mistake.) So, while I'm grateful that this Y offers me decent hours to work out on weekends making the long drive out there worthwhile, their cardio machines selection and sauna design really really need a rethink.
