My hoomans took me to The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse, and I must say, they really understand what matters to a dog. First of all, there's a nice outside deck where dogs are welcome, and it comes with a beautiful sniff of the bay. I spent a considerable amount of time conducting important scientific research with my nose. My hoomans ordered a burger that smelled absolutely AMAZING. They also got a stew with yummy-smelling meat in it. Naturally, I stared at them intensely in case they suddenly remembered that I am an important member of the family and should receive a sample. They did not. I was disappointed, but I remained professional. The food smelled great, the deck was perfect, the bay was sniffable, and my hoomans seemed very happy. Personally, I think the place would be even better if they offered a Golden Retriever tasting menu. Final rating: 5 out of 5 paws. Would visit again. Would sniff everything. Would absolutely judge my hoomans for not sharing the stew. read more

A pretty good pub with pub food we came here as part of a tour for pubs while in port and unfortunately we weren't here long enough. The service was very good and we had some local beers and then I ordered a Guinness to go with the lobster roll and poutine fries (which we never had). We were with a couple from the ship that lived in Canada who knew a lot about the area. The lobster roll was cold but it is supposed to be that way and came on a toasted bun. The poutine fries are served with gravy and according to the couple can be different depending on where you get it. It also had cheese curds in it, so if you are worried about clogging your arteries pass it by. Good stuff, and a good place to grab food and drink. read more

Great feel and look to the place and the Bartender/server was very nice. Everything we had was good to very good. The Guinness Burger was gigantic but needed a kick. The fries were nicely crisp. You'll have to read the description of the Hangover Burger online because of all that's in and on it! This burger was better than the previous one. Two of us had Shepherd's Pie - although not the best I've had, it was very good and big enough to have the leftovers tonight for dinner. The meals as well as the menu are very large, so I'm pretty sure you'll find something you like. read more

Hour wait to get drinks and order lunch. An hour later wanted another round. Thirty minutes later asked the so called sawed off grey haired manager if we could order drinks. He said "we're too busy" to help you. Just as we were walking out, food finally showed up. Should have left 5 minutes before then so avoid the profound disappointment. AND they charged us for food that they were "out of" and never brought. Total experience: almost three hours of (feigned) apology, food that was nearly inedible and huge regrets. read more

We loved our visit here. The staff was friendly, and they were so busy! But, they remained attentive and helpful. We shared the Irish nachos (potato chips!) and they were delicious! We also had the fish and chips and that was a great option as well. Their beers are wonderful, loads of local choices, and even something from the local cidery. There aren't a lot of choices in Sydney, so be grateful to stop into this place that is cheery, friendly, has great music, gracious service, and good food. read more

We ate here on a random weekday after stepping off our cruise. The beer and food were quite tasty. The poutine seemed traditional and was delicious, especially the cheese curds. My fish cakes were great and the pickled green tomato sauce that it came with was new to me, but really nice with the fish. It was sweet and less vinegary. I'm definitely looking into what it was. I also had a local Pale Ale (big spruce brewing) that I enjoyed. They listed which beers (about 8?) were local, which is nice for us tourists who want to try something new. They also have a full bar and live music on the weekends on occasion. The service was friendly and it made for a perfect stop for lunch. If the back porch is open, it's even better. read more

Kilkenny Cream Ale on tap! Add on the delicious fish n chips with house made tarter and it's a win! We sat outside on the rooftop patio on a beautiful sunny day with a view of the harbor. Triple win! Service was slow but hey it was lunch and those workers were doing their best. Tons of construction happening in all directions so parking is tight and a short walk is required. 25 beers on tap and lobster roll special on the day we visited. The food looked good from what we saw going to other tables, but after seating us and getting us two soft drinks, the waitstaff never came back. The place looked rather understaffed and the focus was on the customers just drinking beer. Seemed like the establishment was surprised that there was a cruise ship in town. Doing a local pub crawl in Sydney, NS and this place is a great find! And they have Harp beer! We have been to dozens of Irish pubs all over the world looking for Harp on tap, and here it is! Nice bar & wait staff too! And they were open earlier than the sign /website stated- so make sure you check! Also tried their other local taps -I liked the local the Nine Locks Blonde. Droool! This place has it all: inviting and warm atmosphere, live music, child friendly, "sports stuff" on tv's for the sport nerds, central location, and excellent food! Gluten free friendly and vegetarian friendly. Don't fool yourself, this isn't a "pub" it's a full service restaurant with a pub feel to it. We arrived here on a long weekend Saturday evening thinking the wait would be quite long but we were served almost immediately with our drinks and the appetizers took maybe 15 minutes. This is a very large and busy venue so yes on a weekend it might take a while to get served but it's really not that bad. The live band was really fun! Overall the atmosphere was friendly and inviting. I was so impressed that they had allergens listed on their menu! Great for gluten free people like me. Their bucket of shrimp wasn't that an actual bucket of shrimp (it's served in a bucket but the shrimp just covers the top of the bucket lol). Their aioli dipping sauce is amazing you gotta try it. Their greek salad is so fresh another must. As for the main dishes, the haddock with gluten free rice flour was perfectly done. This place is huge and friendly and has yummy food and excellent wifi! In 10 mins you could download a full tv episode. Lots of wasps on the outside deck but not enough to go inside. The sauce that comes with the salmon is so good I asked for extra so they made more fresh. Great giant fillets of fish and great service. read more

Visited on a Sunday late afternoon and was seated immediately. The waiter answered all our questions, gave us excellent recommendations (fish and chips, in the menu as Killybegs Style Fish), even accommodated swapping a GF pasta so my husband could have the lobster and scallop pasta. The food came moments later and we were both delighted with our choices! I can't recall having a fish and chips better than this. I subbed sweet potato fries which came with curry dipping sauce which was delicious! There was plenty of food in both entrees. I could have taken half a plate home but it was so delicious I polished it off. Wish we had had room for dessert! We did enjoy a Bulwark blush cider which was also fabulous. Happened upon their lobster roll lunch special during a visit to Sydney while on a cruise. The lobster roll was very tasty. I wished that it could be served with melted butter. The fries that came with I were very good as well. Service was very warm and welcoming. I wish that I had more time to try other menu items. Their menu looks fantastic. A great pub and excellent food. They made the lobster and scallop linguini into a gluten friendly penne for me. Also had gluten free rolls for the side and dipping in the leftover sauce. It was delicious. Also recommend the bulwark blush a hand crafted Nova Scotia hard cider blended with wild berries. Large portion didn't leave room for any dessert, but I'll definitely be back to try the chocolate gf option. read more

I regret not having write a review of this place last fall. We stopped here on a cruise and had the absolute best experience. We sat at the bar. It was a weekday. A lovely man was the bartender. Jack ordered the fish and chips and he thought it was the best he'd ever had. I don't recall what I had but enjoyed it. Jack bought a baseball hat from the place as a souvenir. This would be a solid 5+ review. Come May 2016. On another cruise. We told the crew about this place. We again stopped for lunch. It was fairly crowded. We sat in the main dining room. Service was average. Jack again had the fish and chips. Two days earlier in Boston he had this at another restaurant and commented how it rivaled that of the Sydney place. This time it was awful. Thick batter that was not good. Even after removing it, the little fish was nothing to brag about. I had the lamb shank. The meat should fall off the bone. No, it was tough! I have no idea how a place can go from so great all around to crappy food. Maybe because this was a large cruise ship versus a small one? I was really disappointed. Entered the pub and was welcome with a fine Irish greeting. Was told to sit anywhere that was open so we sat out on the patio. Waited for over 15 minuets to get served and gave up and flagged a one of the four waitress down and said politely that we would like to order, she came back with menus 5 minuets later, ordered two drinks and had them at a lightning speed of 10+ minuets later. And trust me the place wasn't busy. Wanted to try the food but was afraid I would have to two to three hours before I would get the food. So we asked for the bill as soon as the drinks came. Had to flag down the manager to get the waitress to give us the bill for the two drinks. So we then left to go eat someplace else. And I wrote this review while waiting for my bill. read more

We stopped here with our 4 year old son and were relieved they allowed children! It happened to be a Saturday evening and there was live music with some really great cover songs . The fish was cooked perfectly and the food isn't greasy pub good it's really good quality. Myife is gluten free and found many food options! First tried it here over a year ago with a large group for drinks & appetizers. Don't remember much about it other than the large standard pub atmosphere, and that we had a big private room to ourselves which was nice. It is roughly the same layout as the prior Joe's Warehouse restaurant which had occupied this building for many years. Seating for a good hundred people I would guess at least, some tables right at the front window before the bar, then two levels in the back and a patio. Basic, dark, wood, casual décor. Very comparable to the Halifax Old Triangle, as it should be. (where I've eaten a handful of times) Most recent visit: a cloudy, cold Sunday in December: I ordered the roasted red pepper linguini ($13. roasted red pepper sauce with basil and chili peppers and a side of garlic bread) - quite a large portion and I had to get a doggie bag for half. It was decent when it was fresh, but oddly, I enjoyed the leftovers for lunch the next day a lot more. Maybe this just gave the sauce the chance to marinate into the noodles a bit more, but it was better than at the restaurant. My mother had the Guinness Irish Stew ($14. Hand cut sirloin, vegetables, rich gravy, served with a slice of wheaten or sour dough bread AND a freshly baked biscuit, although the menu says you only get one, she got both) and found it a bit too salty, but still very flavorful and commented it did have a lot of meat in it (not just a lot of potato filler). She would recommend it to her husband/my father in the future b/c he likes that sort of thing. The menu is quite a good size with various options to please most people I should hope. Very friendly service, and impressed that the waiter brought a free second glass of pop before I even finished my first, nor had I asked. He appeared to really enjoy working there. Yes, I'd go back again (although I only go to Sydney a couple of times a year and have been curious to try other restaurants here that have opened in the last few years). Sydney was a port of call on our cruise ship for a day. We were looking for lobster rolls. The Old Triangle Irish Pub advertised a lobster slider special on Wednesday's so we tried. The local red ale was great but the lobster and seafood chowder was not good; kind of a rubbery texture. Service was also poor and I had to get up to find the waiter repeatedly. The interior was so warm and inviting I loved being here! I had the corned beef sandwich on a pretzel bun and it was a really nice meal. Also ordered tea to warm me up on a cold windy day. Despite living not very far from an Old Triangle in Halifax, I almost never go. But when I'm in Sydney visiting friends, this is a pretty common lunch spot for us. I'm usually there with friends who have kids and some restaurants (especially pub-style places) don't seem very good with that. Not this place! The staff are very welcoming and accommodating. They have kids' menus for all the meals so your little one can find something (and the servings even for kids are huge!). The food is good - not tons of vegetarian options but I never go hungry. They appetizers are bit hit or miss. The vegetarian/hummus platter is okay but if you're on a budget, I'd suggest a pass. I've never had dinner here (just brunch and lunch) but I know that they have live entertainment in the evenings. read more

Love the atmosphere of this place. It has a nice pub feeling, and I enjoy spending time here. They have great musical performances, very entertaining. The servers are friendly, and considering many of my visits have been during a busy time our service is always great. They acknowledge you immediately. The meals are delicious and a great portion, I always order the salmon. The Food has always been hot, and our wait times are never very long. I have absolutely no complaints, it's definitely a place I recommend and will continue to visit. read more

You will be surprised by what you find here. If you are staying at the waterfront you will see the back of the building which isn't much to look at. If you walk up the side street you will see what looks like an old run down entrance but turning the corner to the main door everything changes. The place is inviting and the outside deck rocks. We rolled in at 9 pm with our 2 kids and were promptly served (as kids are not allowed in the restaurant after 10). The food was great. Large portions and super tasty. We were out the door 50 minutes later full and happy. So glad we found this stop. read more

We had a great time here.The best fish and chips so far on our trip. The slaw was awesome as well. I would have given it 5 stars but my lobster sliders were not great. Our waitress was Fun but very busy with 2 cruise ships in port, I get it, it was a bit crazy . The live music was totally Celtic and he was great. We sat inside and he was On the patio so we couldn't hear him as well but we sat right next to the door and still got a good feel for the place. It is thanksgiving too so a lot of the other restaurants were closed. Glad they were open. read more
