The Old Orchard has been around for years and attracts a really cool regular crowd. This is such a popular pub that the regulars are not only from Rathfarnham but from all over Dublin! My mate drinks here and he lives in Arklow! Miles away! The reason for its popularity? Well, do does exactly as a pub should do, serves decent pints, in a comfortable well laid out space, with a laid back vibe and huge outdoor, covered, heated smoking area, with its own bar. There is even a cool little snug here as well, which is great if you don't want to be seen with your date! otherwise you will be seen here because as I said everybody drinks here! This place goes off when there is a big sporting event on, especially any Irish or Dublin games of any sport and it is always jumping on the weekends. There is a great food menu too, reasonably priced and eating here is really popular at lunchtimes and on weekends with families. The spring rolls with chili sauce make a great alcohol soak-er upper when you have had one to many vodka sodas, not that that has ever happened to me! Oh and the coolest thing about this place is the fact that it is built on a medieval burial ground! They took the tombstones, but left the bodies!!! read more

Things started promising enough as it was a weekday night and the Orchard's infamous bar queues were just getting ready for the weekend. A sound barman (wish I could remember his name) was prompt and courteous as he rang up €5.60 for a beer, a quick sip proved that the beer was almost worth it and off to our seats we went. Our waitress made an appearance and dropped off some tatty Christmas menus, we were wondering whether to get starters or not but a quick glance at the ridiculous prices made that decision easy for us. Onto the mains we went and standard pub fair it was - steak, burger, lasagne, battered-fish, and all at non-standard prices. Our waitress took our order, I took the chance to order some drinks, she then took her time. I waited, then waited some more, and then because I still had no beer I did some more waiting. Eventually, the novelty wore off and I went back to see the sound barman to give him some more hard-earned €5.60s. Now that I had a beer I could do some more waiting, and wait I did as it took forever before our non-smiley waitress appeared again with our food. The food had a definite "B-team" look about it, but despite the prices this was only a pub and not a proper restaurant. However, a rack of lamb cooked medium proved to be almost impossibly tough to cut into with the dull knife but after much sawing I hacked off a slice and was rewarded with a definite "off" taste. Normally at this point in a proper restaurant your server would appear and ask if everything was ok, but this was not a proper restaurant so true to form the waitress stayed hidden. I passed on the lamb rack and tried the shepherd's pie which was good and the lamb shank croquette that came soaked in the oil from a weekend's frying. Nasty indeed. After a suitably long delay our waitress reappeared without comment to collect our plates and leave our empty glasses where they were. Maybe she thought the table looked a little empty without them? Still, no complaints as It gave me a chance to go back and see the sound barman for another round of €5.60s. By now we were a little drunk so decided to risk dessert, maybe because I hadn't eaten anything and was hungry. They offered the classic bread and butter pudding which is a simple classic that I have a soft spot for when done right. Their implementation of this classic was not so classic and consisted of brioche smeared with some type of foul margarine/catering spread, covered in anglaise and the surface heated to palest brown while leaving the underlying layers cold (the spread hadn't even melted so you were basically eating an anglaise sandwich, yuck). Funny enough the desserts were served on a slate and slated they deserve to be. Definitely not a Christmas memory worth remembering. read more

The food here was delicious. My husband got the Blackened Peri Peri Chicken sandwich and I got the Crispy Goat Cheese Salad. We finished with the Knickerbocher Glory which was to die for. Our first waitress was a bit slow (had to ask for something to drink 3 times before I rec'd it) and the second one was extremely attentive. We will definitely go back here. read more

I've been here a few times for food during the day and I can't decide whether I like it or not. It's certainly a handy spot and there's lots of seating. They've made an effort to trendy it up and make it all shiny and the food is pretty good. On saying all that I think the seating disturbs my natural sense of equilibrium, Presumably for some structural reasons there's many different levels and often tables are perched at the changes in level so even though it's all fine and there is enough room you sort of feel out of balance here. It's an odd feeling and probably why I don't like it better. read more

Had to meet friends there recently and I was shocked to say the least about how rough the crowd has become. Clearly in a way to turn up profits they bus the young guys from anywhere. We left as it clearly was going to kick off. My friend said that it's not normally that bad and try again. So I did last week with my friend and Mother. When we walked in to the bar we were told to Q. We said "for what" we are only having drinks. doesn't matter others here first. We stood in the Q for 20 mins before we were allowed order a drink in a pub. Madness and never again. 2 bad experiences and the 2nd time in 2 weeks we left. Sinking ship comes to mind read more

The orchard have changed their model. Rather than being a pub where you can show up and grab a seat to enjoy some pints, it's now a convoluted mess where they seek to be a restaurant requiring you to book in advance. Fine you say, until 2 mins in after even ordering your starting drink you are put under pressure to order and get out as the table is needed for the next booking 2 hours from then. Incredibly rushed and uncomfortable experience with no atmosphere as a result of the traffic of people moved on. Orchard needs to rethink this quick or will no longer be my local or choice. A lovely classy aesthetic pub, we'll know for its good grub! Clientele is a bit of a mix to be fair as there was more Coke in the jacks than on the shelves! This should be one of the best pubs in south dublin except for one vital flaw! You cannot get served! It's an unmitigated disaster if you want a pint in this place! If you need to go here bring a packed lunch while you wait at the bar! Not a slur at the staff by any means who were busy and trying but there wasn't enough of them! *memo to owner* if you can't get served you won't go back, if you can't take money off people you are not very good at your job! I love the way people say, "Go to this place! You won't be disappointed". When it comes to a place like The Orchard, it's an incomplete phrase. It should be, "Go to The Orchard! You won't be disappointed... You won't be amazed either" There's nothing more to say. Very expensive drink prices- €26 for bottle of wine, €6.50 per glass. Me and a friend shared a bottle of wine and the glasses we got had red lipstick stains on them. I returned them for half-clean glasses. Later on we got a glass of wine each and again, red lipstick stains on them!! Clearly, their dishwasher is not the best. There is always a good atmosphere with great music, it is a pity their drinks are overpriced and hygiene is not the best! read more

Great for a few pints- always go here on Christmas Eve as its a big pub with a lively atmosphere and a fantastic smoking area. Not to mention they have a taxi base in the car park which makes it extra handy for getting home! I used to go for food here all the time years ago and the paninis etc were always lovely. I went here a couple of months ago and I got a couple of starters. One was chicken wings which weren't great; they weren't crispy and were quite fatty making them a bit stomach turning! I also got the soup of the day which wasn't a soup but more like a bowl of broth with a load of tikka chicken and some veg that they were obviously trying to use up! As a local pub and eatery it's difficult to best The Orchard. Sharing a very busy car park with a couple of restaurants and a taxi company (handy for the lift home after a bevvy), it is usually easy to find a space. Inside is usually warm and cozy, a difficult achievement in such a large space. Food is on the better side of average. Have never had a bad food experience. Finger food at events is particularly good and obviously great for sharing. Loads of tellys strategically placed so it's also the go to place for major rugby and GAA games. Possibly soccer too but I don't care about that! Great place, great atmosphere, great food and just all round great craic. read more

Great place, great atmosphere. Cocktails are so tasty and reasonable priced. Great beer garden, great heaters with loads of TV's to watch the match. Toilets aren't the cleanest and toilet paper isn't always on the holder. Other than that, highly recommend, great place! read more

The drink can be a bit off. Toilet need a lot of work. Water never works in the taps.

What a great time, went there twice during our short stay in the area. Fabulous seafood chowder and brown bread. Mom had the vegetable soup and was very very pleased about it.. later in for a pint of porter and shared a very flavorful chickin stirfy, light, fragrant and tasty. Thanks so much read more

Went to orchard last night - we ordered steaks - absolutely awful meal at premium price for pub food . The steak was placed on a dried up awful something which looked like potato cake which I would think was lying around all day . Veg was given in a bowl - they were zapped in microwave many times before they arrived at our table . Clumps of frozen god only knows what ! which all tasted the same . We ate the steak which was not up to the usual standard and left the rest which was awful . Won't be having that again ! read more

Great place to eat.last saturday was very busy with some young staff that didnt seem experienced so it took ages for food to come out and when it came was not what we ordered.the girl was serving our table was so "whatever" didnt even apologise but i want to thank the manager that came to our table and looked into our eyes and explained and apologised and didnt charge us for that food.thats what u expect from an experienced manager and we wil definitely return for more good food and drink :) read more
