We received a call from our kids that have a small farm in Black River Falls and our son was in the hospital and they needed help taking care of the stock. So we did what parents do and jumped in the RV and headed to Wisconsin .....in March. There were NO RV parks open until May and we were a lot worried we would get there with no place to hook up. We gave Theron a call and he said there was nothing to worry about, he would take care of us, and he did! What a pleasure it has been. We survived the worse snowstorm of the year and Theron was there to make sure everything was working and we were comfortable. We will definitely be back to stay when we come to visit the kids. The Joseph Fugina House has a main floor that you can rent, complete with two bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. Upstairs, there are three separate rooms that can be rented. They each have their own bathroom, with a shared kitchen upstairs and a shared living room downstairs. I would highly recommend looking that their website, as the photos really show how beautiful this space is. They also rent out the Prairie School House just down the street. That's a full house (no separate rooms for rent). The renovators and designers did an incredible job. Walking into the Joseph Fugina House is like stepping into a Pottery Barn or Pier 1 photo shoot. Great attention has been paid to details. Our room in the Joseph Fugina House had wonderful windows that let in a lot of light and overlooked the Mississippi River. There was also a small patio with two chairs where you could sit outside and enjoy the view. Each room has a Keurig coffee maker. The proprietors even restocked us with some Chai tea and decaff which my wife asked for! We loved our stay and would absolutely, without question, stay here again. The location is great. You can walk to town to enjoy the shops and restaurants. Guests can enjoy a 10 percent discount at The Golden Frog, a bar and grill located in downtown Fountain City. The only minor negatives would be: trains are passing by across the street about every 15 minutes, so if you're a light sleeper or can't stand that noise, you may want to go elsewhere. Also, the water was slow to get warm in the bathroom, and when it did, it didn't get real warm. We appreciated having access to a full kitchen - the ceramic dishes, real silverware, a fridge, etc. Again, the decorating was amazing. I hesitate to speak too glowingly about the place for fear that the next time we want to return, it will be booked.

Not sure what to do then suddenly we came to this campground. I really don't care what the amenities are but will they allow us to pop our tent. We decide to check into it. Upon entering we are greeted and I explain what I am looking for. The gentleman said that's fine because that's all he's got and there's only 2 left. I take one. He tells me during the summer he's 100% before the year begins because of the activities available there. The spot is not too far from the office. I'm sweating hot. We pick a spot and start setting up. M has gone camping but doesn't seem to have had much experience. That's one of the reasons why I decided we would camp all the way down until Las Vegas. I have her help me setup the tent but because we're in a rush to get it done before it gets really dark it's me doing all of it. Mosquitoes are showing up. We spray ourselves. I take my shirt off because it's dripping sticky with my sweat making it almost unbearable. I get the job done and it's pitch black. I decide to go take a shower. It felt so good to feel clean again. If you watch the show NAKED AND AFRAID, and you see how they are always getting a million bites by so many bugs. I know what that's like, literally. My back and legs were bitten over and over it was sick to look at. In the morning, M wanted to count the bites as she put another round of nail polish remover. We tried everything last night and found that worked best. It stung like crazy but it worked to alleviate the itch. I don't recommend doing that unless you got a tolerance for pain. Anyway, I think she lost count after 150 or so. I don't ever want to go through that again. I wish I had a chance to enjoy this facility because it has some great outdoor activities. You have to bring your own equipment, machines and gear but they provide all the basic necessities for what ever hook up you need.

Black River State Forest is chock full o' awesome things to do!…read more You can bike, hike, snowshoe, ATV, ride horses, dive, swim, camp, paddle, fish, among many other options. The staff at the main office at the Castle Mound Campground are friendly and helpful regardless of where you may be camping or recreating. I frequently camp with my paddling groups at Castle Mound prior to paddling the Black River. The sites are well laid out, and if you reserve sites 12, 13, or 35, you are closest to both the outhouses and the wood house. Racks of wood are available for $3. Just load up the handy rack located next to the shelter, and deposit your $3 in the collection box. Each site has a fire ring with a cantilever grill grate. Be sure to bring some aluminum foil if you want to cook right on the grate! The showers located near the main office are fairly clean and easy to use compared to those at many other state parks. They have a good potable and non-potable water station you can hit on your way out for the day's activities. The group campsite at the north end of the State Forest is very spacious. They only allow a relatively small amount of people to camp there, considering the space could host a county fair. It used to be a horse camp. Now it hosts group sites with large pads for RVs and campers. The rangers we dealt with at this location were very friendly, and the one high school kid who was assisting was a great help in finding where to access some of the local trout streams (a challenge in this watershed because almost every stream is in a box canyon). The only drawback to camping at the group camp, the East Fork Campground, or the indoor group camp (which I want to try this winter) is that they are pretty far from the paddling locations we use. It's a hefty drive from the Interstate to the north end of the State Forest. If you're in the area and the timing is right, stop in at the Ho-Chunk Pow Wow which takes place on the northwest edge of the State Forest. It's quite an experience, and the announcer is hilarious: "We're doing the same thing tomorrow. The same... damn... thing."
