We had dinner at The Old Court before attending the Irish Tenors Christmas performance at the Lowell Auditorium. Our waitress was very friendly and accounted for our need to leave in time to get our tickets and still have a relaxing dinner. We arrived at 5:45 and were able to leave about an hour later, in part because we chose menu items that were slightly easier to prepare. We had the Mushroom Swiss Burger, the Double Smash Burger, the Volcano Burger, and Bangers and Mash. All four dishes were great, and the chef followed the doneness orders to perfection. We all chose to drink a glass of Josh Cabernet (offered at $11/glass, not available by the bottle). Given the price of the glass, and the relatively low price of Josh, I was a bit disappointed in the size of the pour, which seemed minimal. However, the wine was good. Each burger was well described on the menu: the mushrooms were crispy and generous, the onion rings on the volcano were ample and delicious, the smash burger came with cole slaw at the diner's request, and the bangers and mash were very good. This is a traditional Irish Pub, and there was a lot that we did not choose (but will in another visit). The bar is quite noisy, and we were somewhat protected by some privacy barriers. Stopped in with the Ladies on our way to the Merrimack Rep. PRO - Food was better than expected. I had a very good burger with fries, another pal had the shepherds pie & yet another the bangers & mash. Everyone liked their food. Drinks were good as always CON - Literally had to wave our waitress over from her busy job rolling silverware to order, since we were in a bit of a rush to make our play. So first time ordering food here , to go, a fish and chips, and a burger , they ask how I wanted my burger I said medium well, he said ok. Kitchen is slow should be ready in 10 minutes, ok no problem, good service when I arrive , place looks like much fun, but when I get home the food was not good, my burger was burn, not even well done burned, and the fish extremely under cooked, I can see the eggs and the flower, who ever was cooking was in a hurry or something, read more

I've been going here since they opened. The owner, who is associated with the old management at The Claddagh in Lawrence, is spot on. He's often there checking on things and introducing himself. The food is classic pub fare and they're all decent. All in all it's a great Irish pub. read more

It's been ages since I ate in a bar. It was a cold day between Christmas and New Years, things were slow in office, there was only 3 of us in my department in office and the old timer suggested we come here for lunch which has been one of his favorite for 10+ years. The bar was half full and the waitress seems to know most of them. The bar tender and one waitress were very efficient and kept everyone happy. I ordered that day's special Irish Cowboy. The roasted beef were tender, flavorful but not salty. Hand cut fries were hot and crispy. One colleague ordered the Turkey burger, and the other ordered Buffalo Chicken Tenders. The turkey burger looks to be very juicy, and I tried a share of the chicken tender with hot sauce on the side, very tender and juicy, far better than the fast food chain's chicken tender. read more

Stopped by this place because it was recommended by the locals. I don't know if I would visit again. I liked the space, vibe, and atmosphere but I was pretty unsatisfied with the food selection. There wasn't anything that popped out to me and when I did order the parmesan fries I was disappointed. I went with my mom to have dinner. First off I thought it was a little odd when we walked in. There were immediately tables sprawled out and no sign of a host or a sign telling people to seat themselves (which we eventually did), a few minutes later a waitress got out of the seat she was sitting in and walked over to us to take drink orders. When we received our food I noticed that the plates were cold, normally you would want to send dishes out with hot plates so they would take longer to cool down. My mom got some kind of pasta which was on the daily specials menu, and it was cold, only the sauce was hot, but she did say it was tasty. I ordered fish and chips. The fish was very good and the portion size was great (I like a lot of food). The fish was battered very nicely in a gin batter that wasn't too greasy. The coleslaw was very good, but I had a lot of huge chunks of cabbage which ended up being messy and I had to cut up my coleslaw with a knife, which is usually not called for. The French fries were alright, nothing special to report there. I was not really a fan of their tartar sauce and ended up not using it. Another thing to note, we received our food before receiving any silverware, so we just had to look at our food for a few minutes before actually eating it. After we finished it took FOREVER for our bill to be brought to us. The waitress was nice but she immediately walked away when I already had cash ready to pay for the bill, she just dropped the bill and left which was annoying because I was ready to pay immediately. Also before this, I ordered vanilla ice cream to go, and she did not bring it over with my change. It just seemed like it took forever to finally leave this place. Another thing to note, the bus boy reached in front of us and took the salt, pepper, and ketchup off the table while we were still there, I found that pretty rude, he could have waited until we left since the place wasn't that busy. Lastly, this place is pretty dark, darker than most restaurants I've been in. Only reason why I gave three stars is because the waitress was friendly and the food was pretty good. read more

I suppose my one experience in here makes me a bit biased, but that's too damn bad. I went here during Lowell's winterfest hoping to grab a drink with a few UML friends. When we got in, it was so crowded I could barely move. Just trying to get a drink took over half an hour, and it only took that short amount of time because I gave up and told my friends I was leaving. We quickly found somewhere else to go. The band playing was not very good and too loud for me to make the least bit of conversation. The bar was small, thats all i have to go by, and cannot comment on the drinks. so, I came here on a Sunday night. ALL by myself. I wanted to see what was going in Lowell. What I learned was. . .NOTHING! place is pretty much dead. . .on a Sunday. I was the out of Towner, looking for something to do! As I walked in there was the awesome bartender and 3 other guys. I walk to the bar and order my usual, crown and coke. I had a small conversation with the bartender. He was very informative. As, the night grew on, others came in for a drink or two. The place had abt 15 ppl. I felt out of place, due to how I was dressed. I've learned MA ppl don't dress up @ all when they go out. So my dressing down was a sundress and flats. Choppin' it up with the locals, the night began to happen. Everyone was really friendly. Lowell, MA downtown is very quaint and small. . .ohhh and the cobblestone roads, blahhh. Nightlife Review. The Old Court is a very casual bar located in the heart of Downtown Lowell. It's within walking distance of other bars if you're ever feeling like a pub crawl. They have a good selection of craft beers and legacy beers, and have a surprising array of liquors as well (you know it's fancy when they carry Hendrick's craft gin). The portions for mixed drinks are a little small compared to what I'm used to though. It's served in a wine glass or snifter instead of the traditional highball or hurricane. Or maybe it's just me. I do have a slight problem with the size of the bar (lengthwise) though. It's really hard to squeeze in an order if you came at a busy time. During peak hours, it's pretty much standing room only. Best buy your drinks in rounds or two at a time. I would dare say this is a Lowell resident's bar of choice for casual drinking since you're very likely to bump into a familiar face or two. I think it's only true up to a certain age, let's say 35. Everyone here seems like they grew up in Lowell, went to Lowell High, and then moved on to UML. Got the Rebel Burger, which comes with corned beef, bacon and a fried egg. All the flavors combined so perfectly, and they nailed the corned beef-to-burger ratio so that neither took over. Potato skins were so-so, but the burger more than made up for it. Washed it all down with the best Guinness pour I've seen in three years of living in Massachusetts. Can't wait to go back. read more

When I'm home in Chelmsford and want to see people from high school, Lowell it is. Seems as though the bars downtown are CHS alum's old stomping grounds. Came in on Saturday night to catch up with a friend. We were greeted by a friendly waitress asking if we were in for dinner or drinks. We headed to the bar where we were waited on right away. When my friend was told they don't have Stella we asked what else was light and on draft. The response was "Miller Light" with a scoff. Guess that's what you get for asking an Irishman for a light beer. We sat at a high top in the bar where we had to flag down a waitress. Once she knew we wanted to order from her the rest of the night she was good about keeping the drinks coming. This part of Lowell is almost like a mini-Allston, a bar on every corner, and IMO Old Court is one of the better choices. Cheers! read more

There's definitely a very Irish feeling to this place. From the drinks, to the decor, to the music, to the regulars... the Old Court feels like Ireland (at least to those of us who haven't seen the real deal). This is a great place to meet up with a few co-workers at happy hour. The food menu is pretty good and the drinks are very reasonably priced. It can get pretty crowded (and pretty loud) on a Friday night. I give it the stars merely out of personal preference... I'm not always in the mood for an Irish pub. But, most times I've been there I've enjoyed myself. So, give it a try next time you're craving a point of Guinness. read more

Went there today hoping for some good Irish pub food and beer. First the good. The place does have a good pub vibe to it and the beer selection is decent (not great). The service was also good but thats where it ends. We went for the basics .... Bangers and Mash, and Fish and chips. The "bangers" were basically like breakfast sausage and to add insult to injury they were deep fried and overcooked to boot. The beans were truely just pored from a can (I do not exaggerate!). This Fish looked like it could be good , it looked like fresh fried haddock, but it too was overcooked :( .... the "chips" were cheap shoestring frozen fries. The slaw was not much to speak of either. I dont usually write reviews like this .... but seriously .... for an Irish Pub to serve basic Irish pub food like this is shameful. This time when I went to the old court I got in! Since it was 9.30 and not the end of the night, the doormen were not yet 100% ass-hats. I went upstairs for an event, and made good use of the cash bar. The drinks, pretty much being 5 bucks were ok. The one bartender for the whole upstairs was a bit annoying. He was fast, but I still border-lined ordering my drinks in 2 just so i wouldn't have to wait again. I'd go back, but I wouldn't be wicked excited about it. I first went here to see a show upstairs. The music and atmosphere rocked. Ever since Evos closed they have really taken up the helm as far as good music in Lowell is concerned. I had a proper Guinness and some improper conversation :) I returned for dinner some weeks later before seeing a play upstairs by a local theatre company. Our server was nice. My date got the fish and chips, which from the looks of it, we could have lived off for two days. It was either ridiculously delicious or he hadn't eaten for weeks prior. I had steak tips which were juicy and succulent. I tried sweet potato fries instead of mashed and was pleasantly suprised. My only qualm was with the tea. For an Irish place you would think they would do better than stale yuckies drawn from a wicker basket. Perhaps it's a scheme to get unassuming customers to order more beer,because it works. We saw this great show where local writers read their short stories upstairs. The service is great, they have yummy comfort food, and they have stuff to do here! Whenever I'm back home, I usually like to suggest the Old Court as a meeting place for several reasons: during the week, it's an excellent happy hour spot, reasonably priced drinks, and centrally located. The bar definitely has some charm to it, and I generally enjoy it. During the weekends, it can be a different story -- it's a pretty popular bar and can get pretty crowded -- they usually have a band playing upstairs. read more

Cozy Irish bar. They pour an excellent Guinness, and have a resident fish named Seamus. Surprisingly good food for a bar. The food is traditional Irish comfort food (as far as I know) and their sweet potato fries are excellent. The fries are the "skinny" type, and have been perfectly cooked every time I've ordered them. I spent a lot of time in this area, and this was one of the only bars that I never had to deal with any trouble-drunken harassment, fights outside, etc. They usually have a band playing on weekend evenings, and it definitely gets a bit loud then. If you're visiting the greater Boston area, you are obligated to visit at least one Irish pub. And this one is great. It's an authentic part of the community and they have a whole lot more going on than whiskey and Guinness. Although, they do take quite a bit of pride in their whiskey and Guinness. Its quite a lunch spot. The regulars start to come in around noon. They grab their fish and chips, pint of ale and jabber with the bartender/owner about this and that. Its nice to find a community like this in a big sprawling area where you can easily get lost. Love the big windows! Come in, find yourself a seat in the corner. Watch the bar. Watch the people walk by outside. Nosh on some sweet potato fries. Have a beer with your lunch. Read some James Joyce or something... read more
