Scottish Pub in a cool little town. This place was exactly what I was looking for after a morning…read morespent checking out Tantallon Castle and a 3 mile walk back to town. The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Even the Seasonal Vegetables, which were served with the pie was really good. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

On entering it is a spacious and cosy looking bar that is definitely suited for tourists with a collection of beer mats almost being used as wallpaper to cover most of the free space behind the bar, some of which I had never even heard of! The decor and feel to the sitting area itself is traditional with a modern fusion, little tweaks like old spirit bottles (JD mainly) being used as candle holders are excellent to the vibe of the place and really let you settle happily in to one of the booths and take the surroundings in. We went in here because my better half was feeling hungry (I was saving myself for the North Berwick Fry which is just next door to the Ship Inn, in hindsight I should have eaten here) and decided to pop in here for a drink & a bit of lunch/dinner, we definitely weren't disappointed. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

I love Maysons. It's…read morea great, loving pub. Full disclosure: I am not a native to Dalkeith, or Scotland, or Europe. But I feel at home in Maysons. I've enjoyed Maysons dozens of times. It felt the same 10 years ago as it does today, except for a few upgrades. The TVs have turned to flat screens. The bathroom was recently painted. This is Dalkeith, folks. Nothing but the best. My first experience at Maysons was as a wee 21 year old exchange student. Full head of hair. Low alcohol tolerance. Wide eyes. This is the closest pub to where the Wisconsin exchange students live and learn. I know that I learned more in the streets and pubs of Scotland than I did in the classes. Although, I certainly retained more from the classes. Pub lessons are simply ingrained and carried in your DNA. The staff, especially Gav, is remarkable. Gav looks like he could beat the piss from you in a brawl or a race or a drinking game or a push-up competition. He also might beat you at snagging a lass. But he's friendly and attentive and exemplifies the quick-witted Scottish humor that endears any visitor. You'll notice name plates on the walls for old regulars and lots of shaved heads. The men in Scotland can be intimidating. But they can also be hilarious and fun and affectionate drinking buddies. It's nearly impossible to match wits with a Scotsman as he barbs you with that killer dialect. There is a back room for pool. Or you can use it for privacy during a make-out session. Or for a quick snorting or stomping or stabbing. You know, druggin' & thuggin'. Use your best judgement and please be discrete. Wouldn't want to draw attention. Maysons may enjoy the kissing and game playing, but keep the drugging and thugging outside. There are some convenient alleys nearby which contain a number of 90 degree turns for your quiet moments. Use them as you wish. But always remember the CCTV. Don't let my poorly crafted jokes deter you from Maysons. It is a great, small, authentic pub. It's a great place to relax. Mind the cobblestone streets as you stumble home. They jump up out of nowhere.

Excellent atmosphere, excellent…read morestaff, organised, good bar, that isn;t cheap, but it's reasonable for a theatre style venue ,and some truly excellent shows on, and open until super late, so excellent for fringe goers. We watched "sh*t faced shakespeare" here, in december, and even then we weren't cold, although there are cute little booths around the edges, we sat near the front on the seats at the centre, comfy enough, and such a great place to enjoy any performance.

Just for atmosphere alone this place deserved 5 stars. From 28th of July until 28th August the…read moreSpiegeltent will be returning to George Square Garden's. After the clamour last year at it being changed to Hullaballoo, the Fringe organisers have reverted it back to its original format. And it is awesome. Open until 5 in the morning, this square is the best place to mingle as the sun begins to rise. Although the pints are ludicrously priced, and come in plastic cup, this adds to the festival atmosphere. It is invariably rammed, but this adds to the charm as you can always be guaranteed to bump into someone you recognise, or start up a drunken bromance with someone you just met - 'I love you man'...'No, I love you dude'...etc. It is like you enter into a different little world; the location in George Square Gardens helps displace it from the city, and it does feel like you are at a festival. Couple this with the carnivalesque element, you have a Cabaret show and an oddities mini-museum / exhibition, and there is always the most pierced woman in the world hanging about waiting to have her photo taken with you. If you come to Edinburgh during the festival, you have to come here. Forget the overpriced drinks, the atmosphere is incredible and to be honest most of Edinburgh is overpriced during the Fringe
