They suggested we come check out this art center. I'm so glad they did! You walk into GreenHill and see gallery rooms and children's art exhibit through the center hall. Walk past the info desk til you come to the studio. They have books and a fun art installation after passing through the first room. Keep walking and they have markers and colored pencils and paper to draw. In the back they have an easel wall - string and clips with color paper to paint. There were tables for clay and one attendant was setting out mirrors for the kids to do self portraits. All this was free when we went On Fridays they have story time and art for a nominal cost. Maybe we just came on a good day, but it was a quiet, intimate setting featuring pieces I have not seen at mainstream museums. The owner was very kind and knowledgeable with a true passion and love for art and the work displayed in the gallery. He showed us other features of work, and knew exactly who we were talking about when we couldn't find the signature of a particular artist. He even pointed us to more works by the artist! Every art lover should visit this gallery at least once. You won't regret it. :)

We were greeted by artists, and the owner upon entry, and were made to feel very welcome. We chatted with the owner and some of the artists for a bit, and everyone was very pleasant. They have a great variety of art on the walls, and a few artist studios in the back. All of the artists seem to have their own style, and subjects they like to paint, which makes for a good collection and variety. Pricing varies based on the artist, and obviously the size of their pieces. Certainly worth checking out and supporting local artists if you're looking for something to spruce up your walls! Would certainly recommend, and would return!

Declared a museum, converted into artsy studio. Non traditional style, collections of junk(not…read morereally, but at our homes we'd probably call it junk), piles of fabric, discarded toys, piles of old styrofoam egg cartons, and fabric stacks everywhere. It sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does. The color and textures play against each other. I tell you, I would NOT start displaying my egg cartons, but there, it works. Go and check it out for yourself. Before you up and leave, take a little cash. Suggested donations from $1-$5 are requested. They will take cards but for this just toss a little green. Then go walking. Explore the kitschy, the junky, the old broken yet charming collections. Something that is also cool and is more brand new and hi tech - the kitchen area. There is still stacks of plates and cups towering like 15 feet high or more. But the fridge is some fancy double glass door with deep open shelves. Everything is labeled. I would love that at my place. Even better if someone else eat that up . As you might expect even the bathroom is artfully designed although not with your typical hgtv style. It's fresh, and funky (is that what the kids today still say?). And peaking out one of the back doors exposed this lovely shared garden and sitting area. I'd kill to have something like that but I'm not sure that's actually available to share.

Years ago, I went back to her shop. Mrs. Gray had died years before. Her shop was now a kind of exhibit place, and it was still filled with an incredible collection of "stuff" - toys, lunchboxes, wigs, figurines, buttons, everything you can think of - and lots of it in bins classified by color like a big bin of red toy cars. It was overwhelming and a lot of fun. I think the grand daughter or niece of Mrs. Gray was my friendly hostess in the store. I was allowed to roam the store freely - alone, stunned and amazed. They had named the place Elsewhere and there was some sort of organized group connected to the place. I got on their mailing list and sent them a contribution. Some years later, in 2014, I returned to my beloved hometown, Greensboro, for a visit. An old friend of mine and I walked the length of Elm Street, starting at the few blocks leading up to the Jefferson Standard Building - heading toward Lee Street. I relived many memories of my youth, my "hippie days" (circa 1967) and my working class hero days on that walk. We stopped in a lot of shops and the clerks and customers were friendly and seemed to like us. We supported those shops by making some purchases. It was quite a pleasant stroll. We reached Elsewhere. I hadn't been back there for decades. The people there were very full of themselves. They seemed suspicious of us, two traditional looking white old guys. I guess that was it. I've been around and I can recognize people who are too hip for their own good. They were entirely unwelcoming. I got the feeling that they wondered what we were doing there. They treated us like we were shoplifters or CIA. We wordlessly left the place. It was very disappointing to me. I did not send another donation.

After searching online, I found Jerry's Art Supply Wholesale Club in Greensboro--about an hour and 20 minutes away--and I couldn't be more grateful that I made the trip. From the moment I walked in, I was met with the most genuine and welcoming customer service from Erica and Patricia, who turned what could have been a routine shopping trip into an inspiring and unforgettable experience. Patricia was incredibly kind and attentive while helping me find supplies, and when I shared that I was building an art portfolio for my SCAD application, her encouragement was beyond anything I expected. Normally, I'm not comfortable showing my work to others, but there was something so warm and authentic about Patricia's spirit that I took a leap and shared a few of my completed pieces. Her reaction--her eyes lighting up as she pointed out specific details she loved--made me pause and truly see my own work in a new way. As my own worst critic, this was a moment I'll never forget. I may or may not have given her a surprise hug in my excitement, but she was just that awesome! Then there's Erica--an absolute gem! Her bright, sparkling eyes when talking about art techniques and supplies showed just how passionate she is, not just as an artist but as someone who truly loves her job. Even though she was busy helping other customers, she never made me feel like an inconvenience. She took her time, answered all my questions, and we even geeked out over the dream of owning a set of luxurious Caran D'Ache colored pencils one day! Her patience, knowledge, and enthusiasm made my shopping experience an absolute delight. Coming to Jerry's felt like fate--like the universe placed me there at just the right time to receive the encouragement I needed from Patricia and Erica. Whoever owns this incredible store, please know that you have two of the kindest, most passionate souls representing your business. They made my entire month, and I will absolutely be back! I gotta say, this is one of the best art supply shops I've ever been it. It caters well to artists…read moreof many mediums. High quality paints and markers, GREAT selection of paper. Nothing felt overwhelmingly overpriced, everything was fair ESPECIALLY if you get the $25 annual membership. My only gripe is that there could be a good selection of clay + sculpting materials, but this store focuses heavier on painting/2D traditional arts, which allows for a spectacular selection in those areas. Employees were kind, welcoming, and helpful. Can't recommend this place enough, I will be back!
