So first off. I do not have to drive this everyday and this may the only time in what left of my life I will. That disclaimer aside I was leaving NYC on my way to California and I ran the entire length. First off I think I paid ;like under 13 USD which was not bad. Second off I rolled past the tanks from the opening of the Sopranos and that was beyond cool. I was only missing the cigar Third it was well maintained and helped me get used to driving the moving van after fighting my way out of Queens in it Fourth the rest stops were beyond awesome with gas, some with food courts and the like. My initial instinct was to rate this a star lower than I have. Actually had to think about it for a few minutes and have a debate with myself. (Who won the debate? Me.) Not too long ago, my oldest friend and I were hanging out in Oakland, NJ, a town or 2 over from Wayne, the place in northern NJ where we grew up together (we've known each other since we were 8 years old). He lives in Florida now, but he's staying temporarily in Philly while working out of south NJ, and as he looked up at the majestic Ramapo Mountains, he said, "Y'know, from Wayne up, NJ is a beautiful state. But as you start going south...it's flat, ugly, drab, dull. Crowded, polluted beaches and Pine Barren hillbillies. I don't care what Springsteen says. There's nothing here to write romantic paens or ballads about." I couldn't have agreed more. Which brings me back to my review of the NJ Turnpike... When I was a kid, we tended to take the Garden State Pkwy. when we went to the Shore to swim (Point Pleasant) or to visit my grandparents (they lived in Brick). It was somewhat "scenic," at least in comparison to the NJ Turnpike, Currently, I ride part of the Turnpike on most days as I make my way to and from Hoboken for my job (a lot of my ancestry is in Hellboken...sorry, I meant Hoboken...but I've never been a fan of the city). I come into the Turnpike from Rt. 78 and it winds its way up through a gritty industrial landscape of swampland and factories and warehouses that definitely qualifies as an eyesore to the Lincoln Tunnel and the GW Bridge further beyond. Mercifully, my time riding on it is short, unless there's heavy traffic. Which there too often is. Sometimes, at night, they'll shut down the portion that I have to take on my way home, necessitating a wearying, stressful, heavily trafficked "detour." Doesn't help that I'm an old, timid driver with cataracts, but...my God! They've been "fixing" the Turnpike for years and years, but it never seems to get much better. Sometimes, I've prayed (as only an agnostic can!) for rain, because at least then it will be open. During the last years of my father's life, I traveled monthly down the southern portion of the Turnpike to visit him at my sister's home on the Delaware/Maryland border. My memories of those rides aren't pleasant. A large part of that was having to see my father in his progressive mental and physical decline, part of it was that Delaware/Maryland is "alien territory" to me, and I was uncomfortable having to navigate its "strange" roads (sometimes it felt more like the "Deep South" to me than it did the "Mid-Atlantic South"), and the lesser part of it was the monotony of the long ride down on the Turnpike. A flat, dreary landscape all around. Some streams, lots of scraggly woods and pine trees. Nothing to elevate my spirit, like a ride up the NY Thruway has always tended to do. More than enough "rest areas," but they tended to be filthy and crowded, and when I availed myself of their food or their gas, way, way overpriced. They served their function, but didn't provide much in the way of "rest." Or comfort. A long, monotonous ride down, until I finally reached the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which actually was quite impressive. Crossing over, that momentary spark of excitement was quickly extinguished as I began to maneuver my way through the unfamiliar but equally monotonous landscape of DE and then MD. And, if anything, the ride back north was even more tedious and enervating. Still, I've given this review a higher star than I'm really inclined to because if one considers it in a utilitarian manner as opposed to an aesthetic one, it does serve its purpose. Going south, I rarely encountered a ton of traffic, or potholes. It wasn't as if a quicker, more pleasing alternative existed. In the end, it got me to where I needed to go. Going north, for me, is more of a mixed bag, but that ride, which I make most every day, is of a shorter duration. Also, it's more familiar to me (I can remember riding on this stretch of highway as a kid with my parents, and my father pointing out "Snake Hill," where an insane asylum once existed), which helps. It's not "alien territory" (although I sometimes wish that it was-- I get why people unfamiliar with NJ, riding only through this swampy, polluted portion of it on their way from Newark Airport to NYC, think of NJ as a "cesspool"). Bottom line? The Turnpike will get you to where you gotta go. But it won't be a "scenic" trip. Or one you're likely to remember with fondness. read more

I love, love, love what the widening of the Turnpike has done to my drives to Brooklyn. Construction seemed to take forever. But when work was completed it made a huge difference. The time between the Turnpike entrance & my exit to the Staten Island Expressway & the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn is now so much faster & easier. No more long backups. No more going via the Outerbridge Crossing. No more taking I-295 to avoid backups. There is now smoother sailing to the Goethals Bridge & on to Brooklyn. Hurray. read more

biggest scam ever. we're from a state where we don't have tolls. we've only ever used ones that are pay as you go through (and it's advertised that way) or billed after from our license plate (which is what we assumed this was because we never went through a place we could pay). i got on the app as soon as we got home trying to pay our tolls. there was no way I could pay them without the bill. received the bill with 2 $50 admin fees. long story short our under $6 toll cost over $100!!!!!!!! read more

The New Jersey Turnpike has its good side and its bad side... The good is that it provides the quickest way to travel through New Jersey on your way up or down the Eastern seabord via I-95. There are lots of service stations providing food, gas, restrooms, etc... Nice that way. The bad is the amount of potholes and bad highway condition of many segments....c'mon....I am paying close to $20 to use the highway, so that equates to millions of dollars a week for the NJ Turnpike Authority and they can not maintain the road????? Terrible. There are "federal" highways that are free that are in much better shape than this "privately owned" tollway.....something is not adding up here..... read more

What's the best thing about the New Jersey Turnpike? It's the fastest way to get outta New Jersey! This turnpike takes you right through the middle of the Tollbooth State. It's not a scenic drive. Lots of shopping, traffic, warehouses and industrial stuff. New Jersey is the Garden State, if you're growing smokestacks. Whenever someone tells me they're from NJ, I always ask them what exit they're from. Everyone in Jersey lives close to this road. Keep an eye out for aggressive drivers, real housewives, Snooky, and The Situation. When you're driving down this highway, blasting some Bruce Springstein and Bon Jovi is required listening. I felt like Tony Soprano driving along here. read more

I take the TurnPike every day to work, even through I could easily take 295. The turnpike offers fewer exits and less traffic. I've also found that the road is better maintained, so there are less pot- holes. Exit four is one of the better exits, unless it is the summer. Summer Fridays are the worst, lots of traffic. This exit offers a few tolls each way, both cash and E-Z pass. The E-Z pass tolls are never crowded, I always question why more people don't invest in an E-Z pass. Currently there are no construction delays around Exit 4. read more

Five stars for the Turnpike? Yes. It was smooth and straight and well maintained. It was an easy drive with excellent signage, limited exits, a sufficient number of service areas and good speed. I suppose that I was just fortunate that there was no traffic today because I was through New Jersey and into Philadelphia swiftly. I only wish that the entire highway was 65 mph. read more

Definitely not a bad stretch of roadway in the garden state. I use it often and I never find that I'm stuck in terrible traffic. The roads are in great shape compared to that of NYC and for the most part are clean and clear. NJ taxes go a long way there. The Tolls are cheap are normal but do beware of the troopers that hide up on the ramps because once you fly by them its too late. Jersey drivers do drive super fast so keep to the right and let them die by themselves. Keep it up NJ! read more

As a paying customer, i feel that the "service" that is being provided is less than ideal. There have been numerous potholes, and the road is only 2 lanes in Atlantic county. By the time i am done paying the road fees...errr... tolls, this trip will cost me like $15. Considering the number of other cars and trucks -- theres a pretty penny being made. read more

I am a regular on this road as I must travel here daily. Overall, the traffic goes well. When it gets bad, it is awful & you are in utter misery!!!! This is not the road to just go speeding as the State troopers are there to greet you. I will not dare provide you the areas for the speed traps as they will likely change them and then I won't know them either :). Therefore, please drive with caution. When there is incline by weather, the Turnpike is generally cleaned quickly for the heavy traffic use. If you drive prior to an impending storm, obviously they are cleaning the roads and you won't find it so pleasant. There is nothing these workers can do about that. The traffic signs are well placed and make sense. The digital signs sometimes do not make sense. But overall provide a lot of relevant information to make your drive smooth. There are plenty of rest areas that are generally clean. The fast food vary. If you are lucky, you get to a rest area that has a Starbucks (yummy) and a Nathan's hot dog store. Love Nathan's!!!! I generally commend the workers that service this long road the goes through the state of Nee Jersey. You can get into Delaware from this road or into New York from this road. Through the last 25 years I've probably driven on the how many tens of thousands of miles up and down this turnpike. used to be a total disaster we the split came up by exit 8. They seem to of gotten that resolved traffic moves pretty nicely now. Still too expensive. When will they pay off this road and. Take 10% of our property tax put it towards the transportation and stop over charging drivers on a daily basis. If I could get back $.50 per every dollar I burned up sitting in traffic on the turnpike I would have a handsome retirement fund. read more

I didn't even know the New Jersey Turnpike had a Yelp page, and it probably shouldn't even exist! Unfortunately, checking Yelp on my daily line of Route 73 red lights led me here. I rave about the Turnpike at work whenever I get the chance. In September, I started a new job 30 miles north of my home and I was projecting at a bad year of traffic. By taking 295 from Exit 36 to Exit 57, I hit massive traffic around Exit 47 on my way to work and massive traffic around Exit 40 on my way back. I was looking at over an hour commute each way and raising my blood pressure in traffic daily. About 2 weeks in, my coworker suggested taking the Turnpike with the promise of no traffic in the morning and only a bit in the afternoon. I didn't believe her, but I gave it a try a few days later. She was right - even during peak hours, her bold statement stands after 5 months of driving to work. My commute to work dropped to about 45 mins and my commute back (thanks to route 73 traffic) is about 50 mins. From Exit 4 on Route 73 to Exit 7 in Bordentown (the 295 equivalent to Exit 36 to Exit 57), it's $1.45 each way. If you go off peak hours (before 7am and before 4:30pm), it's only $1.15. tl;dr: Turnpike somehow has a Yelp page. No traffic. $1.45. read more

It could be worse, right? I try to stay away from it during the daytime. Why am I writing a review of a turnpike? The road has recently been paved, so they've got that going for them. I wish they'd upgrade the tolls to the ones that take a picture and bill you later, because I could get from one end to the other a lot quicker without having to register for EZ Pass and without having to remember to carry enough cash, which I can't because I don't live there. Again, why am I writing a review of a turnpike? :-) Honestly though, keep your windows up as you get closer to Norfolk and the airport. Lots of factories with smells that will stick with you for a while. read more

This is a long highway that starts in Maryland and we exit in Jersey. Now I have been traveling this highway for maybe 30-40 years now. They have been working on it for maybe 3-4 years now and it seems to be done. I mean the roads are smooth again. They have been re-paved and they even added some exits and some more over passes. In all it's a nicer drive now but there is always them crazy tolls but then they will never go away. read more

I was on the turnpike last Sunday and got off exit 4. I asked the lady which direction is the Lincoln Financial Center. She had no clue......smh. All toll both operators should know everything about their exits. They should all be trained. Tourists would like to know that they are headed in the right direction. Quite possibly, the world's first mega-highway, and it's world-class, to boot. Recent expansion has eliminated years of bottlenecks. The overall design of the NJTP sets the standard for major corridors on the Interstate Highway System. Talk about the bargain of the century: for about $14 you can run the full length of the NJTP, about the same price you will pay for the privilege of crossing into NYC via the George Washington Bridge. The NJTP is incredibly well engineered and maintained; heck, it even features the former federal highway specifications for lane dividing lines. The white lines are longer and wider than current federal spec. With the recent expansion, the obvious next step is to raise the speed limit for cars to 70 mph and drop the double fines rule. Leave the limit at 65 in the truck lanes. read more

Travel the NJTP from Exit 4 to exit 9 when going to the office and I must say that I have no issues. I do get on the road north by 6:00 AM and do not start heading south until 19:00. At other times you may have a different opinion. That stretch of the NJTP is well maintained. read more
