    Chicken Tikki with Rice

Gave me a stomach bug after eating. Rice tasted dry and cold. Buffet-style options that might leave you with the same stomach bug I got right after.

Let's be clear on this: The Mosque Kitchen is not a restaurant, it's a food court. That's totally fine, of course, I don't mind that at all. The bare and simple style of the place is part of the reason it can be as cheap as it is. So it's pretty cheap. And that's lovely. For the price you pay here, you get a decent amount of food and a warmish place to sit during the day. It's a shame the food is so-so. I've only had the "Green curry with mixed vegetables" so far, and it was pretty sad. Some curry sauce with peas and carrots splashed onto a huge bed of bland rice. I had mine with garlic bread (eh. It was fine) but I should definitely have had the "extra vegetable topping" addon instead, because the rice-to-veg ratio was pretty dismal. The taste of the curry itself was fine, but the lack of any diversity of texture and taste in the veg that came in it meant that I left feeling full but not satisfied. The price is what keeps Mosque Kitchen up there at the three, as it's difficult to beat that price, but it's such a cheap experience in every other aspect as well that I can't honestly recommend it. It was fine, but if you can afford to go elsewhere, I'd suggest you do.

Tarker Dhal, Garlic Naan, and Rubicon £5.50

I was a student in Edinburgh and the Mosque Kitchen was seriously a life saver! A huge, delicious meal for under a fiver is pretty much every students grail. Now, even though I'm not a student anymore, going back was like a home comfort. There is always too much food, it's still cheap and tastes great! Yes, it's paper plates and canteen style serving, but the seating area is modern and always clean and friendly. I ordered the Tarkar Dhal, rice, garlic naan (which I believe is the best naan in Scotland) and a can of Rubicon and it came to £5.50. I don't know whether it's my taste buds that have changed, or the cook, but it was missing the kick that it used to have. Maybe I should just go for a spicier option next time! There is always a fair amount of people in, but I've always managed to get a seat, even at lunchtime. It may not be to everyones liking, but I strongly suggest everyone tries it at least once. In an expensive city it's a beacon.

Like home-cooked Indian food? Like not having to wait for your food? Like having a ton of choices? Well this is the place for you! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Mosque Kitchen -- a no-frills, take-away or sit down, "restaurant" (I use the quotes because it is super autonomous, noone takes your order). I got the rice plate with the chicken curry and chana masala ( plate of rice, one chicken curry & one veg 'topping' ) for 6 pounds. I added on a huge naan for an extra pound. This was more than enough food for me! I got the chance to try what I wanted with both rice and naan. The process works as follows: you walk into the establishment, head over to the back where you will find a buffet line with all different types of veg and non veg (chicken, lamb) dishes. You tell the server what you would like. You pay. You seat yourself. You feast. If you want tea or a dessert you stop by the area in the middle of the establishment and let the employee there know what you would like. I got the chai for 2.5 pounds and I felt like that was a bit too pricey for the chai -- which had the chai taste but was watered down with milk. It did the job, but not in a satisfactory manner. All in all, LOTS of affordable food with a GOOD amount of flavor -- definitely stop by for lunch/dinner!

If you only have £3.50 in your pocket and want a meal that's a) tasty and b) enormous, preferably with a bit of 'character' thrown in, this is where you should head. By 'character', I mean you sit outside under a gazebo in the backyard of Edinburgh Central Mosque, and you eat out of a polystyrene box with a plastic fork. But the food is that good that you won't care about the pigeon eyeing up our lunch 3 feet away. I usually go for the veggie option, because the one time I did get the chicken there were quite a lot of fatty chewy bits. In fact, it made me stay away from here for a while, but then a veggie friend convinced me to get the lentil and spinach curry instead, and 3 years later I'm still eating there. It's right by the Uni, but you get a surprsing mix of people thanks to it's word-of-mouth reputation. If you haven't tried it yet, then you need to. Soon.

This is the best. place. in. Edinburgh. ever. I have friends who come back to visit and refuse to leave without stopping at the Mosque Kitchen first. I'm not talking about people who'd never been here before (though, word does get around), but people who lived in Edinburgh for a while and counted on the Mosque Kitchen to cure their disproportionate hangover. I always get the vegetarian options (which have multiplied lately!) which are dahl, rice, greasy spinach with potatoes, chickpeas, and sometimes a vegetable curry. And I think they're definitely the best and cheapest options available. The Mosque Kitchen also sells rubicon and delicious ginger beer to quench your thirst. The people who work there are also real sweet too.

Rice & three veg curries with naan bread, £7.

Spacious and adequately furnished curry canteen on the Bridges, just up from Old College. Price start from £3.50 for rice and dhal. I paid £7 for rice and three curries with naan bread - a very full meal! The only caveat I would add is that I never find Indian restaurant food to be that healthy, most likely due to the nature of the cooking oils they use. But certainly a full and flavoursome meal.

Tucked away down a subtle side street entrance, the Mosque Kitchen is a hidden haven for hearty Indian cuisine. Serving locals, students and even the business elite, the luring smell of home cooked, honest Indian fare attracts all. Offering a limited but exceptionally affordable array of dishes, the Mosque Kitchen produces some simple but flavoursome gems. Vegetarians can enjoy a truly moreish Tarka Dahl or a flavoursome spinach and potato curry, whilst those of a more meaty persuasion can indulge in one of the Mosque's daily chicken or lamb servings. With the offering of rice, plain or garlic naan to accompany each dish, diners can anticipate a meal that satisfies any level of hunger. A word of warning, though, diners can expect to feast on humble trestle tables, shelter under a rustic corrugated roof and mingle amidst a friendly bunch of pigeons. Meek and unassuming, the Mosque Kitchen boasts unbeatable prices, food of a superlative nature, and will undoubtedly leave you comfortably stuffed for the day ahead.

I ordered a wee bit of carry out from Kama Sutra for a Friday night at home celebration. Overall,…read morethe quality of the food was quite good. The items purchased included KADAI PANEER, LAMB KORMA, and FISH PAKORA. As usual, I will itemise my reviews for each of these foods. In terms of food quality, the most important aspect of a restaurant review, the food was truly SUMPTUOUS, RICH, and TENDER-MEATED. The kadai paneer, which contained paneer with stewed vegetables, was adequately seasoned, flavourful, and succulent. I will say, the quantity of paneer included was MINIMAL, but that is how these restaurants SCAM you: they give you a hefty portion of the cheap stuff, but are overly restrained when it comes to the proteinous goodness. As for the lamb korma, it was RICH. Served in a thique spicy and sweet coconut sauce as yellow as the yolk of a quail's egg, with tender morsels of a lamb's meat, this dish was tantalising. And, finally, the fish pakora. It was flavourful and spiced with a reasonable level of flakiness, such that it was moist but not soggy on the interior and crisp on the exterior. It was served with a delicious yoghurt sauce and a tiny rubbish bag filled with 'salad'. Overall, the food warrants four (4) stars. I have deducted one (1) star due to the LACK OF CARBOHYDRATE in this meal. Little did we know, the saucy dishes are not served with rice or naan. Fortunately, this was carry out and I had some mediocre Co-op naans on hand to seep up the many unctions. So, beware: you must order RICE or NAAN or another INSTRUMENT with which to consume your food, unless you prefer to simply drink the thique and rich juices as you would a cup of tea. Because this food was carried out and consumed in the comfort of my home, I do not factor service, ambience, or other in-restaurant factors into this review. That includes the supposed sex theme of the restaurant. Perhaps one day I will venture in for the full experience.

Perhaps it was my fault in selecting this item, but I've never had Tikki Masala so sweet that I couldn't enjoy. The gravy had a burnt caramel taste and when I asked the server if it was suppose to taste that way I was informed that it's creamy and sweet. I probably should have sent it back, but instead tried to scrap off all the gravy and just eat the meat and side of Naan that I ordered. I think Brits may enjoy an entree with a sweet tooth, but moving forward I may order butter chicken as to not replicate this scenario. It's a shame, because I love Indian cuisine too :(

I found this place as rated one of the better Indian restaurants in Edinburgh that does vegan options. I don't get it. We arrived for dinner on a Monday, and their vegan menu online was not shown on the dine-in menu, so I asked the server about this, and they told me what could be made vegan -- at least they were familiar with the concept. We got a vegan Balti and vegan Rogan Josh (each about £10.50), plus some tandoor roti (£3.50 each) and papadams and dipping sauce (another ~£4). The Rogan Josh was the oiliest Indian dish I've ever tried had in my life. The dish was swimming in oil. Beyond that, there wasn't much complexity in flavour beyond high saltiness. The Balti had the same saltiness / lack of depth issue, but at least wasn't as oily. We were quite disappointed in the lack of flavour depth in both dishes, especially compared to the Indian food you can get in the UK in general. What's more, the portion sizes were not especially big, so we really relied on the roti to be full. Very disappointing Indian food overall. We would definitely not return.
