I loved it here, we stayed on the nights of 29 and 30 December for a quick pre NYE break. We got a…read more2 nights for the price of one deal provided that we ate in the restaurant both nights. I was relaxed from the moment we turned up, massively hungover from a wedding the night before, but the staff and all the people in the pub were really laid back and friendly and the bacon and tomato ciabatta healed me almost immediately. For dinner that night I started with a bloody mary (10/10), then had scallops, follwed by hake fillet with white beans and chorizo and sherry jelly. All really good and reasonably priced. We were feeling a bit better the next day and went shopping in Bath and to the spa. As a result we were more prepared for a proper dinner. I had a bloody mary to start again, then smoked haddock and leek risotto. We had a free glass of English white wine with the starters, which was really good (of which more later). I had phesant for main course, which was alright, but the cauliflour cheese side dish was great especially when mixed with my chestnut mash. I had an apple pie sort of thing for dessert and then coffee and petit fours then a double brandy while sitting on the massive comfy sofas and reading the internet. Breakfast both days was excellent, including duck eggs from ducks that actually live at the pub. The English wine we were given was for sale as it was from a vinyard round the back of the pub. It was also really cheap given the quality of it so we bought 6 bottles. A great place and highly recommended.

Located between Frome and Radstock in the heart of the Somerset countryside this little gem of a country pub and restaurant takes some beating. Set in ample gardens in Lower Vobster with plenty of outside seating if the weather is kind to you, the welcome once inside is warm. The real ale on pump when I called in was Butcombe Bitter, a little local treasure from North Somerset and was as bright as a brass button and tasted as good as it looked. The menu is not vast but is varied; the fresh fish board is a highlight. The fish mixed grill offers great value, a selection of king prawns, scallops, with fillets of salmon, bream, and sea bass served with new potatoes and vegetables of the day all for under £20. My companion also plumped for a desert, Sticky Toffee Pudding which was light as feather with a sauce to match, all topped off with a couple of strawberries. The inn also has three quality letting bedrooms for those who may wish to linger a little longer, lunch, dinner, and breakfast maybe! For opening times and directions, see their website, http://www.vobsterinn.co.uk , the trip is definitely worth it!

So, in visiting Farrington Gurney we had no choice but to visit the Farrington Inn. We were unable to sit in the so-called 'separate' dining area, as a large and loud group were occupying the space, so we chose a table near to the quiet end of the bar and next to the kitchen. Although we were made to feel welcome, the atmosphere definitely lent itself to a locals pub. On browsing the menu we were presented with a rather limited choice, and with an over-emphasis on mashed potato. My girlfriend chose the 8oz rump steak and I decided upon the cod and chips.Despite requesting that the steak not come with peas, it arrived at our table (in fairly good time) with a heaped pile of the offending vegetables. The steak itself was generous in size, although it was definitely not cooked medium-rare as requested. Combined with the accompanying Stilton sauce lacking any actual stilton flavour, the steak went mostly uneaten. The cod was of a decent size, although the batter was what I can only describe as damp and uninspiring, and the cod itself was somewhat suspicious in quality. The chips were reminiscent of school canteen offerings and the peas were bland. The tartar sauce was clearly home-made and was satisfyingly chunky. Our side order of garlic bread with cheese came with a very generous helping of rich cheddar, although this was not melted all the way through and was clearly done quickly under a hot grill: the garlic butter beneath the cheese was still cold and the edges of the bread were scorched black. Despite the setbacks of the main course we decided to try a dessert each. We ordered the summer fruit pudding and the profiteroles. After placing the order at the bar and taking my seat, we were informed by a cook that the summer fruit pudding was not in stock. We were not offered an alternative, only a rushed apology. I requested to cancel the profiteroles as by this stage the entire experience had become one of contention. Throughout our visit the service was fast and accommodating, and it is a pity that the food was not up to a similar level. Based on quality alone, the menu was significantly overpriced. The worst part of the stay for me personally was awaking in the early hours of the morning with stomach cramps and having to endure a sustained period illness throughout the night, thanks to the previously-mentioned suspicious cod.
