The rest can learn a bit about hospitality. I was turned away when asking for a Moscow mule.. They didn't even have bitters!! This was my first experience with an actual stand alone bar. This place was a little out of the way of the other bars downtown, but not by a lot. Went with a group of friends on a Wednesday night around ten there were about two empty tables and some empty stools. The bar tender checked my friends' ids and joked around with them and when he asked my friend how old she was she said "old enough..." he said "old enough for what?" she said "old enough to party". ha. The bar tender was cool, quick, friendly. Oh and they make the drinks pretty strong. Think my jack and coke was $4, friend's jager bomb was $5, and other friend's white Russian was $5. Was fun will probably go again. OH!!! Before I forget they play cartoons on the tvs here which is funny and britney spears on the speakers ha. Went in tonight and ordered three drinks and the bartender looked as if is was from the twilight zone. Very unpleasant staff, not to mention they took 20 minutes before they were able to get to me and skipped me every time someone new came up, they'd help them even when I spoke up. This is a pretty good dive bar. The drinks are a little heavy handed and the beer is cold and cheap. The place could use with a good cleaning however, bit dingy and the floors are sticky. My second trip to the bar was quick and painless, got served in less than 5 minutes, but on my first trip I couldn't get service if there was a girl on ether side of me at the bar. I later found out from a regular, after waiting 25-30 minutes for a drink, that the guy that had been ignoring me was recently single...professionalism at its best. This is a nice bar to go to with a small group of friends and hang out. The drinks are very reasonably priced and everyone is very friendly. It can get extremely packed on weekends but I still think it is worth it. The only reason I gave it four stars is because it it would be a lot better if they had a bigger place and maybe added another pool table. But overall it's not bad and the staff is really friendly. Good atmosphere and I like how I'm always running in to a lot of people that I know. Definitely a popular hole-in-the-wall in Bakersfield. Good prices for the drinks, but the bartenders take SO LONG to get to you. I dread when my drinks run out because it's quite possible I can be at the bar for a half hour trying to get the next one :/ I'm not even going to comment on the bathrooms. Worst experience at the mint ever, took over 30 minutes to get a drink which would have been understandable if if they didn't try to make you leave at 1:15 I understand that you want to go home and you are done working guess what..... all of your patrons worked all week to make sure they had money to put into your business. I am a very level headed guy but when a female bar back Cecilia starts yelling at you and calls you out when the line to the door isn't moving. Uh where do you think I am going to go? Another staff threatening to fight you over a cigarette that you had finished before the line even moved. This is customer service no need to be rude. The stocky bald guy in his late 30's-40's with a tattoo behind his right ear who acts like he owns the place and is very very rude should not be saying anything to your customers he is causing a lot of your problems. With the customers I saw walk out the door because of wait time and how some of the staff were acting there was easily over $1000 of sales lost from the time I was there. Watch your cameras and see what I saw tonight. Consistency in Customer Service is huge and if you can't handle people don't work in a bar. It's a Gay bar. No, it's a Straight bar. I don't know what it is, but leave your labels at the door. The drinks are cheap and strong and that's all that matters. This is an anything goes bar. Gays, Straights, Trannies, and the occasional homeless person, visit The Mint. I always have a fun time at The Mint. The music varies, as there is a jukebox. Although it's fun and cheap, there are some negatives. The outside neighborhood is like skid row with a porn theater. The Mint's restrooms are horrible. This is a dive bar that I have seen morph over the years. I like to think that I was involved in it's early century peak... somehow, as young Bakersfield youth, filled with agnst and the verbage of Henry Miller, a group of young people found themselves in this bar, drinking $2 beers and $3 vodkas, listening to Hank Williams, Jr. and Dead Kennedys. The youth began crowding out the old men at some point - but then it turned into something ridiculous. A place where people went to find the freaks. Some random straight laced characters once asked me and my girlfriend if we wanted to be a part of a foursome and that's when I knew it was over. WTF- although we may have hung out with some of the only trannys in Bako at the time, that doesn't mean we were on the commercial market. I honestly can't say why I come here. I hate it, it's loud, filled with nasty and obnoxious people always trying to start fights for no apparent reason, but the drinks are pretty reasonably priced so there's that I guess. I couldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you're doing some kind of sociology experiment and need to be around the most low class, disgusting people that Bakersfield has to offer. Or maybe your thing is doing drugs in bathrooms and being herded around like cattle in a room full of sweaty strangers with questionable hygiene. I expect the entire place to break out into a full scale Jerry Springer episode at any given time. If you're over 25 and out of that smug, know it all phase but still insist on drinking downtown just go to the Alley Cat. Very fun dive bar. I usually go on Mondays and they have a very good DJ playing all kinds of music from 80s, 90s hip hop to current top 40. Wide variety of beer, free pool and excellent service. There's also a very large patio for smokers or people who are looking to chill. The manager is awesome. The restrooms are not only outdated but kind of dirty. read more

I've visited this dive bar one time only and have no plans on returning. Not sure what the big excitement is, the place is as grimey on the inside as it is outside (maybe a little more). The bartenders were actually very nice and helpful, so no complaints there. But the atmosphere is just not the greatest. Crowd seemed to be mostly a mix of young punk rockers and emo (which might be the reason why I wasnt digging the place very much). If someone wants to be in the closet, they're business, if someone wants to be a republican, god forbid, they're business. You cant come in and start talking shit to them because they're views aren't yours. I dont agree with racist shit but some people are asses like that. There's all kinds of people here, you can walk in and see a priest, a hooker, and a lawyer hanging out. There's no judgement here, were all different. So dont come in for 2 seconds and think you know what goes on and yell at people. You have to get to know people.
