Nice little theater with good sound. After getting your ticket, you walk down the downward sloping hall to your theater. I can see this slope being troublesome for people with ADA needs, just FYI. The theater was clean and spacious. I enjoy seeing movies here because how roomy the seats and rows are. In front of you are tables to set your food/drinks and there's lighting under the table to allow you to view the menu in the dark theater. There were probably around 50 seats in our theater so I recommend purchasing your tickets ahead of time online. Arrive atleast 15 minutes early to get a good seat! As for the food, it's nothing special or spectacular but being able to sip on some wine while watching a movie on a large screen is nice. I went in for the first time thinking this was a Studio Movie Grill type place where I could order full meals - nope. We ordered a beer, a wine, pizza and potato Chile empanada. The drinks came ice cold in glasses which was nice. The pizza was a reheated slice from smug's, pretty good pizza. The empanada was from Los Bagels and was just decent taste wise, I would not recommend this dish. The service was friendly and prompt. They were patient with us as it was our first time and we didn't know how to order. They play a little informative video on how to order right before the movie starts, by then we already ordered. It would be most helpful to new patrons play this video further in advance and more than once. I recommend this theater for the intimate setting, comfortable seats, spacious rows and wine, but pass on the food. It's just your average theater concession offerings and not very fresh. read more

The staff is friendly and this is in a good location downtown Arcata. It can get busy on weekends so check to make sure they are not sold out on shows (movie tickets) before you go. The Minor Theater is a true old school movie house, and one of the oldest running theaters in the country. It may have seen it's glory days but this small old structure still boasts one of the grandest lobby's around and the interior details are worth a trip inside. It is also a very small venue by today's huge multiple-plex cinema standards, as a benefit the film costs here tend to be a bit less. There are the usual snacks and concessions services at the bar inside and this is also location of the ticket counter. All of the staff and management that we have dealt with have always been courteous and professional. The theater runs major current releases as well as independent films and they all seem to cross the screen here at a relatively quick pace. Upstairs is by far the best place to view films, the balcony lends a vantage point that the downstairs just does not offer. You are literally right in the middle of the film in the balcony. It's such a sweet spot upstairs that that is usually where the crowd is, if there is one - we rarely run into crowds here at the most its a handful of people viewing the film each time we've been. 3.5 Stars - rounded up for local support and being a landmark structure in town. 00258 read more

Oh my goodness, this place is AWESOME! You can enjoy a draught beer or glass of wine in a VERY comfortable chair while watching your movie. Just buy your affordable ticket, and have a seat. There are menus and pencils at each spot. Servers come around and take your order, then return eventually with your order. Popcorn with butter and/or nutritional yeast is on the menu along with fresh baked goods from Los Bagels. Exceptional local and regional beers on tap, and other sweet delights. Staff is friendly and very much on top of it. It is really amazing how they keep it all straight, in the dark, having to duck to deliver your order. Impressive. This is easily the best place to watch a movie in Humboldt County, and it's not even close.

The only reason I can give this theater 4/5 stars is because everything is absolutely wonderful except occasionally the service. The gorgeous architecture and vintage style interior is so much fun and they offer amazing food and beverages. I always get a kombucha on tap, veggie Chicago dog and popcorn with nutritional yeast (which is coincidentally all vegan). It's always my go-to theater in Humboldt! However, I have noticed some of the staff can be unhelpful and outright rude to me. This is the reason for my review actually.... I had a bad experience recently and felt I had to say something. Two young ladies were working the night of this experience, and I was in with a group of friends. At first I felt the general annoyance from the girls, like as if me being there was bothersome and they couldn't wait for me and my friends to leave. It honestly seemed like they were just having a terrible day or something so i tried not to judge. I ordered my popcorn but when it never came out, I went to ask if it was coming soon. She had no idea what I was talking about... even though it had only been a couple minutes and only one other person had ordered food after me. She spoke extremely slowly and kept zoning off into the distance... it was bizarre encounter. My friends and I were a little concerned at the whole situation. Again, i tried not to judge and eventually got my food and proceeded to ask if I could get some closed caption devices (one for me as I am hearing impaired and one for my dad, who is almost completely deaf). The girls said they didn't have those.. but I always get them at the minor and they're crucial for us being able to follow the movie dialog. One girl said she'd look but after waiting about 40 minutes into the movie, I went to check if she'd been able to locate them yet, upon which she said "oh yeah, it won't work for this movie." It was just a bit of a bummer and when we came out later to say thank you and goodbye, the girls were eating takeout up front and giggling. I was glad, thinking maybe they seemed to be in a better mood, but as soon as they saw me, they looked up at me with disgust and annoyance and just glared as I walked by... It was so weird honestly. I've never had service like this before, but id be lying if I said this was a truly isolated incident. I have gone to this theater exclusively over the years and have had a number of employees treat me similarly. It's not that everyone has to always have a smile on their face but I just don't want to be treated like I'm a huge inconvenience to them or that I'm some freak. Like I said, the theater is incredible over all! And this does not go for all employees there. I have had many kind, amazing and helpful hosts there before. But this night was rough enough that I felt the need to share. I still recommend going to this theater and it is still my top choice :) I guess I'm writing this in the hopes that someone at the theater sees it and perhaps is able to improve upon the hospitality and kindness that is provided to their customers. read more

This Theater is my favorite theater. I live down the street and am immensely grateful to be so close by. Their new high quality seats feels like I am VIP, the shows they offer, the food service all make this cinema experience so different and special. Great theater that was built in 1914, but has been fully refurbished. (Fun fact: It is the oldest movie-only theater in the US.) The seats are really comfortable and it's so much fun to order good food (kimchi veggie dog!) and cider/beer before the movie starts, and have it brought to your seat during the movie. They offer both independent and feature films, and also show Metropolitan Opera Live. read more

Our family likes going here for the shear comfort of the seating arrangement and the kimchi vegan hot dogs are a huge hit with my daughter. When you walk in you have to figure out how to order food on the card instead of them having the information video playing as you enter (yeah this would be helpful). They played the video like 15-20 mins after 3/4 of the theater was full, so I'm sure they've had to explain a few times to people like me how to order using the cards sitting on the tables. read more

This was a very pleasant surprise during a brief visit to the area. It shows a few movies at a time and has a bunch of showings, with some overlap with the McKinleyville movie theater on the first run blockbusters. It has a sort of bar table in front of the seats, and it serves food and drink at the seats, but the offerings are minimal compared to other food-serving theaters I'm used to, specifically Alamo. The drink selections were impressive, with some good options across a variety of types, a coder, and even kombucha on tap. The food was limited--popcorn and packaged goods. The cookies are local. The candy is standard movie theater candy, but I'd think they could charge more for more interesting, local candy. The service seemed to be good and quick. The theater quality was good, not super stadium, but I could see we'll enough. There were pillars in the main theater on the ground floors, so some seats in the side back would have an obstructed view. That theater had both orchestra and balcony seating. The staff were friendly and helpful. There were maybe 10 minutes or previews, so way better than big chain theaters with 25 minutes of commercials and previews. I had no issues with street parking on a weekday evening. read more

I really love supporting local businesses like small theatres. This is a beautifully refurbished old building but it can be very difficult to navigate if you have mobility issues. The sloped entry way into the theatre is quite steep but apparently they don't have to upgrade it to code because it's "historically" dangerous so it's grandfathered, I guess. They keep the lights on over the audience throughout the movie so they can serve food and drinks. For some films the service and lights are very disruptive, completely interfering with a filmgoers ability to see the screen. And DO NOT (DO NOT!) attempt to bring in any form of outside food even if it's not something they sell, and even if you have dietary restrictions their foods do not meet. I would leave your gum at home if I were you as they watch for unauthorized chewing. They are absolutely militant, vigilant, and very confrontational about it and will confiscate your food and/or escort you from the premises after "kindly" offering to refund your money because they don't need your patronage, they sell alcohol! I'm not sure that server realized exactly how close she put her face to mine to threaten me with expulsion for having potato chips since I can't have popcorn. Mill Creek and Broadway never bother me at all. Certainly I've never had my food confiscated instead of the always present option of just putting it away. The folks at the Minor treat everyone like you should know every nuance about how their system works (you must be an idiot if you haven't been there before) and they're very irritated at having to sell you (not give) refills for sodas. They're obviously very invested there to sell the big dollar items, namely beers. This is actually a better place to drink than to see a movie. So as long as enjoying the movie isn't important but drinking is, enjoy! But again, nice building guys read more

The history of this place is definitely part of the appeal. If it was not for the historic appeal it would still be a decent movie theater. Nice to have an upper balcony option. Okay - here is something amazing. The tiny town of Arcata is home to the Minor Theater. The Minor Theater happens to be the OLDEST THEATER IN AMERICA built specifically for feature films. It survived the silent film era up til today showing pictures like "Transformers" and "Sicko" on the Fourth of July. It still has a cool old balcony. It still stands upright serving its intended purpose in all its glory and no dumbfu*k visionless greedmonger has knocked it down. YAY! That just makes me so damn happy. 5 x 5 x 5 stars. The Minor Theater is a major part of local history and it is still here to enjoy today. read more

Okay, I think I may be one of the few people who went to this theater before it was bought out by some corporation. Before that all happened, you had the bargain movies in the middle of the week (anywhere from a buck to two dollars!) and my beloved midnight movies, which would feature anything from "Aliens" to "Akira," to "The Shining" or "Point Break!" And to top it all off, the Psychotic Cabaret used to perform "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" here before it was bought out. I know it's "hip" to rebel against corporate rule here in Arcata but I just remember the good ol' days at the minor theater. You can go and see the history of it but it's just another corporate owned theater out to get your money. read more

This is the college town theater. Don't be surprised if some young college kids sit behind you and you hear bottles clinking or rolling on the floor. It is part of the ambiance. Current movies loose out some to independent films. This is good since it is the only venue for these in the area. The selection of independent films that roll through is great. There are showings of older movies on the big screen that are fun to attend. A theater with a balcony, now the little kid comes out in me. This earns all the stars for the theater by itself. Overall, the theater is a fun experience but a little small compared to your average, modern theaters. Oh, and three stars because the new owners are causing a loss on the local feel and the true pleasure of The Minor. It was a five star legend for the college town before the change over. read more

It gets 4 stars due to the old school feel you get from this place and they show a lot of independent and smaller budget films. I almost went to 3 stars or even 2 because their popcorn doesn't seem that old school or delicious, and the concessions overall are a little lacking. They only have 3 screens all of which are tiny by modern day standards. That being said it is the only theater in town Arcata showing new release films. Personally I enjoy the Arcata theater myself with a full bar and decent snacks, but that is in a whole other league. All and all I thank you minor theater for all the good movie times you have brought me and my family over the years. P.S. Wildberries market is right up the street where you can get all kinds of tasty snacks and drinks and sneak them in, but you didn't hear that from me... read more

Always loved the minor. However twice I have been to see a show there and it was bitterly freezing! The first time the guy said the heater was being fixed. Weeks later they said the owners don't do much and In fact had at least finally fixed the popcorn machine. Not going back in the winter at least. They should lower the price if one must freeze and wear coats etc.. Take a blanket folks. read more

They say that staff make all of the difference between a good or bad customer experience.....unfortunately I was on the receiving end of an officious sales clerk who seeing me enter with a cup with 2 ice cream scoops advised me happily that this wasn't allowed to be consumed in the theatre as I had bought it at the ice cream shop around the corner. WTF! The theatre didn't even sell ice creams. I had 5 mins before the movie started so needless it wasn't an enjoyable feed. She didn't need to be such a stickler for the rules and clearly could have turned a blind eye. As a tourist my take on this town of Arcata is based on this experience. read more

This theater was already not my favorite since their remodel, which made it less far less comfortable than it used to be and decimated its historical charm. But they also treat their customers like dirt. I had been planning to take my family of 7 to two films here this week, but thanks to not being allowed to use their restroom in a totally empty lobby on a quiet day (despite being clean, sober and polite), and in addition, being flat-out, boldfaced lied to by an employee, those 14 tickets will be bought at a mainstream competing theater instead. Too bad. The old Minor was fun and it would still be an okay place to see a film now and again if they cared about their patrons instead of hiring people who act like they're doing their public a begrudged favor by existing. read more

This place has Vegan options! I love coming to the movies with my boyfriend filling out an order during the previews and then my delicious food is brought out to us while we view the motion pictures.
