My flatmate Liz had a Living Social deal for brekkie at the Mill's Cafe and so invited me on a lovely sunny Wednesday (yay! hump day) to join her at Mills Cafe. We got there around 8:30ish and I ordered the Big Brekkie (x 2 eggs sunny side up, 2 pieces of sourdough toast, mushrooms, tomatoes and veggie sausage) and Liz got the Italian Brekkie (I think - am unsure b/c once I got the food, my eyes were strictly on my plate). The deal included coffee, but they were kind enough to let me switch and get a chai latte instead. We also got to choose x2 macaroons at the end of the meal (we both got pistachio - other choices were vanilla, chocolate and something yellow), and this was actually very very yummy.
Mills is located in what I think of as "Cafe Alley" in Bunda Street, but being located at the end of that line of cafes, it feels more open and thus quite good for people watching - it didn't feel as closed in as I have previously experienced at the Cafes' further down such as Milk & Honey.
My food was quite good. I was especially impressed at how well the sourdough bread stood up texturally to the eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms. It did not turn soggy at all. I also liked the herbs the mushrooms were cooked with. However two things did detract from the overall experience. Firstly, I wish they'd bought salt/pepper shakers to the table (at one point Liz said she'd felt like she wanted to add some salt to her eggs too). I guess we could have gone and asked for it, but neither of us wanted to get up - we were too busy with fuelling up with the food. Secondly the veggie sausage wasn't that great. I have had veggie sausage that has tasted heaps better. Apart from these two things, it was a decent brekkie at a decent price, however am in two minds whether will come here again. read more
