Viking Hall - Great cooks have great fun at a self-catered event!

I came down here for the Scandinavian Bazaar courtesy of fellow Yelper Lard Belly E. notifying us…read moreof the event that was held here earlier today. I didn't get to see other fellow Yelpers, but it wouldn't have been easy given how packed the place was. The entire main hall was filled with vendors displaying the rich culture of Norway, Finland, and Sweden. There was a wide variety of arts & crafts, winter-style attire like boots as well as thick sweatshirts, novelty items with the national flags like pins, stickers, or Christmas ornaments, and my personal favorite, the food. There were various candies and chocolates imported from Norway and Finland. Some of the items I picked out were two milk chocolate bars, one with hazelnuts, a chocolate horse with punch filling on the inside....(can't wait to try that one...), and Swedish gummy candies. In addition to the vendors, there was also a dining area in one corner next to a food booth that offers traditional dishes from the region. Two of the items on the menu were sold out, hardly a surprise with the amount of people that were seated at the chairs and tables. I was fortunate enough to get the last order of Risengrot, a Norwegian rice porridge very similar to American oatmeal with a thick consistency. One of the employees behind the counter recommended adding sugar and cinnamon. It was very delicious and made for a great afternoon snack. Risengrot is a holiday staple during Christmas time in Norway. In addition to the candies, I came across a 2020 calendar that showed the beautiful countryside and picturesque towns with a backdrop of the fjords in the distance. I had a great time meeting and talking to everyone here, some of them locals who own businesses here in town. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back for the next one.

This event facility is recently built located on Arctic Road…read more I've attended a community event, a private event, and concerts here. It is one of few Anchorage event facilities available to rent, that can hold over 150 people. Parking is ample and the building is secluded enough from neighboring homes. The facility includes a coffee shop/cafe area that you can choose to be open during your event. The facility kitchen is large and open. You have the ability to choose what spaces you want to rent, with the largest space being the gym. If your event has alcohol you will be required to rent the facility as a whole. I like that all rental information to include costs, deposits, etc is laid out clearly online. You will not need to contact anyone directly until you are ready. I believe they even have bouncy houses available to rent. Like most facilities, they have staff there watching. Sometimes they're cool, sometimes they're annoyingly saying the music is too loud when we in the crowd, can barely hear it. Gotta take the good with with the bad ya know?!

Coffee shop staff is super nice, decent/regular prices. If your kid is going to a basketball program (like mine is), make sure you sign them in. You have to- for liability purposes. We didn't for basketball games, but for practice yes. They host Halloween events (and possibly other holiday events) that I've seen too, just haven't been able to go to them. Bathrooms and pretty much everywhere in general is clean and staff is nice.

We had such a hit or miss experience with Dimond Center Hotel during our stay in June 2024…read more Housekeeping - since we arrived after midnight, I really didn't need housekeeping our first morning just hours later so I advised the front desk who put a notation. Housekeeping still came. The second day, after I left the room at 9am, I put up the sign for service and housekeeping never come. It may be due to the fact that the hanger for please make up the room is the same color as please do not disturb. Having different colors on each side may be easier for housekeeping to differentiate. Water - We received a note under our door that they were turning water off for 2 hours but didn't specify the date or approximate time. We thought it was that night so we filled up the tub so we can flush the toilet. It wasn't turned off during the night so we assumed it would be during the day so decided to stay out most of the next day returning after lunch to check. When we returned after dinner at 9pm in hopes of using their tub, we found another note under the door that they were shutting it off from 11pm-1am, preventing us from soaking in that tub but only able to take a quick shower. It would be great if they gave us a time frame with our original note the night before. But everything wasn't a miss at this hotel. The breakfast was good and staff friendly and attentive to ensure the food was filled and tables cleaned. It was great that the shuttle ran into Downtown and not just the airport, so we didn't have to take the bus to and from downtown until we got a car. But overall, it was underwhelming considering we paid the most here out of our three accommodations in Alaska.

I stayed at the Dimond Hotel one night. The entryway is nice, not fabulous. I went upstairs to my…read moreroom and it had a overlook on the balcony in the lobby, which was a little bit weird. When I went in the room, I was pretty surprised how big it was, but the bathtub was huge! It was clearly meant to be a nice hotel! On the downside, in the rear of the hotel, there's a courtyard that has some really cool metal artwork like a giant mammoth, but there's also a shed that's filled up with some junk and some equipment. There's a smoking area and the ashtray was full. It just needed some care! Another downside is that they used Fabuloso to clean and that smell just makes me sick. The breakfast in the morning was okay. They had a waffle machine, some overdone eggs, some sausage , and some cereal. Add watered down juice and mediocre coffee. People were keeping it clean, but it was just average. Woild I stay there again? Probably but this time I'm gonna bring my grandchildren so they can play in the big giant bathtub.
