* The issue I originally mentioned below is being resolved. Customer service is exceptional and I will return for future purchases. * I received my Indiana map yesterday. It was even larger than I pictured and I couldn't wait to get it on the wall. This will be an excellent tool to help with work planning. The bad part, I guess this is on me but, the map is from 2003. In Indiana this means that the map is from before Interstate 69. This is a very important feature and I would have bought a different map if I would have realized how out of date it was. It is going to pain me to have to draw I-69 on my brand new $169 map with a sharpie. I will say I am surprised they would sell a map this out of date on their website. 20 years is way too old to be selling. Buyer beware. Read all details closely. read more

This is my second purchase from The Map Shop and once again they did an outstanding job. From start to finish everything was perfect. Communication was great and the staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I got a map of the shipwrecks in the area I lived in off the East Coast and the quality of the map is superb and the frame is gorgeous. The care that goes into shipping is also second to none. I need to add that these are not just maps. The details that are part of it are unbelievable. Drawings, descriptions, historical facts etc. are all included. It's fascinating. The map is very near and dear to my heart because the area was part of my summers growing up. It's truly a treasure and brings back so many wonderful memories. While shopping in many shops throughout Western N.C. one thing caught my eye, the Knoxville Raised Relief map. It showed my future home area of WNC in relief form. I was unable to purchase one from any of the shops, since we had to drive back to Long Island, NY, with a full load. Back in NY I found The Map Shop by chance. Now I'm glad I waited; the map, frame, and shipping was less than an unframed map in any of the stores. It arrived beautifully framed with picture wire, ready to hang. This is a fantastic family run business in Charlotte, NC that is professional in every way. The map even came in a well made shipping container. Thanks Sara! We ordered a large map (48" x48") mounted on foam core board. It arrived very securely and heavily packaged with no visible exterior damage. Once we removed it from the box the backing was dented and bent. Luckily it only impacted the bottom corner of the front image. Sara quickly offered to replace it but the hassle was not worth it given it was a gift and had already been delayed. She offered a partial credit to make things right. Order your maps from a reputable vendor! I ordered a map of Mexico several months ago. After several weeks I got an email saying the map was backordered and I could wait or get my money refunded. I asked for a refund and was assured it would be forthcoming very soon. I have never received the map or my money. read more

I know, I know...paper maps are a thing of the past in this age of gps, smart phone apps and the like. You can call me old fashioned, but there's nothing like a paper map to learn the layout of a city or area and The Map Store is a super nice place to find such things! The have historic maps, maps of cities - both national and international, maps of states, countries, and maps of hiking trails. Then there's maps of subways, stadiums and on and on. My husband has a small obsession with globes, and had his eye on a globe at COSTCO, but I convinced him to check out TMS, and he wasn't disappointed! The folks working here are very friendly and helpful, nice selection of wall maps, kids activities, guide books, and travel gear. TIP: The clearance bin of maps are maps that have been laminated but have wrinkles...if you don't mind the wrinkles, these are AWESOME values. We saw a regular priced map selling for $32, but it was just $2 because it had a large clear wrinkle in it. I ain't no wrinkle snob! Worth checking out-- nice place for all your mapping needs! I love maps, so I find myself in here every couple of months. If I'm planning a trip to a new city I know I'll find a street map here, because they have everything from Paris to Poughkeepsie. But they don't stop at your typical urban maps either. You can find topographical maps of any region, state, country, or continent. Or the moon. Their political maps stick to the planet Earth, but cover every minutia you could want, on every conceivable scale from wall-sized maps of the Earth, to pocket atlases. And don't even get me started about their representative maps (GDP, population, etc), or their historical maps. Some of those are real treasures, fit for framing. However I think the biggest part of their business is the one that I have no experience with. They make custom maps to any scale. Generally these are ordered by businesses to show their delivery area or to map their driving routes. I get the impression that they do a lot of national business in this department. There can't be that many cartographers left, but these guys make a living out of it. read more

I like being able to support local business & this is a fun & interesting place to do that. I would say whoo-hoo as good it gets because as far as I know it's the only shop around like this, but I'll stick w/being a fan for now. I thought the globe selection was a little limited. I really like that they had a great selection of compasses. They have a section with bird books & birding around the area & some appropriate complementary items for that section. The same for hiking in & out of NC. A friend of mine that I went in with found some great birthday gifts for kids that were interesting & a great choice for something fun & education for a child & they have a great selection for children of any age. I found a wonderful Back Roads of Ireland by Eyewitness Travel that I have perused joyously for the past few evenings to satisfy my longing to travel right now. . read more

Who buys maps nowadays was my question hahaha. Apparently a lot of people still do for their out of the country travels. Excellent service. Got a beautiful rustic looking world map and I also got these little pennant pins so my husband can write little notes on the pennant on why he went to certain locations in many different countries. It'll be a cool little family project. You can also order from them online. I did have a little ancestry family mystery on the Phantom Islands and the sales associate finally explained to me where it would've been located. This company is amazing. I ordered a map for my husband's birthday, which I did late, because I completely forgot his birthday was coming. They managed to get my map printed and processed and sent out so it was here just in time. That alone is amazing, but the map itself is perfect -- the quality and resolution is great, and the walnut rails look excellent. A map shop in 2013?? We took a stroll after going to the farmer's market across the street. Spotted The Map Shop and decided to take a peek. There are so many different maps from hand maps, globes and even laminated wall maps. They have everything from all the states in the US to Chile, Athens, Malaysia, Sicily and much much more. Despite the easy access to GPS systems, smart phones and Google maps, there are many that still cling on to the original navigation system of eyes, maps and a good sense of direction. My dad still whips out his 6 ft map and lays it out on the living room floor when he is in search of an address (yet he has an iPhone, but I digress). If you're one of these rare creatures, the "map readers," this place probably has any map you desire! Me, on the hand....you can give me a map and I have a pair of eyes to see it, but there is really no synergy between the two. Nonetheless, what an interesting store! read more
