An absolute hidden gem if you are looking for something less well-known than Pittsburgh's famous "big" galleries and museums. Regular exhibits of black-and-white photographs are displayed on the wall with accompanying text explaining the thought process and motivations of each artist. The photographic art displayed here is often socially conscious and utilized to make points about gender, class, and culture. While those points are made with varying degrees of success, the photographs themselves are always quite intriguing. In addition to the gallery, there is also a reading room. Several of the photography books are for sale, but it can also be used as a library space. If you want to learn about classic photographers and their art, there are more than enough books to give yourself a thorough education as an autodidact. I have only one caveat about this place that should be taken into account. I want to point out that if you are going here with younger family members, discretion and close supervision should be STRONGLY advised. There are certain visuals you may want to steer away from. The content occasionally goes well beyond PG-13 territory and occasionally into R-rated or NC-17 photography. The gallery portion for example is not unfriendly to nude photographs, and the reading room contains NSFW and explicit titles such as Nan Goldin's Ballad of Sexual Dependency (among others in a similar vein). With that caveat aside, however, Silver Eye Center Photography is one of Pittsburgh's hidden treasures and is very worth your time.

While Wood Street Galleries tends to be flashier and high tech, 937 Gallery makes up for that with gorgeous craftsmanship and a solid emotional connection. There's an option to paint or choose some sturdier pottery to do pour glazing on. They also do wheel throwing courses! For painting, we chose a mug and a small planter. The prices are listed on the bottom of each item and it comes with all the supplies, paint, and final firing. There is not table fee here like at other places. The staff is incredible. They remember you by name when you come in and are so helpful with picking out ideas, sharing techniques, and getting colors for you to use. If you don't finish your item the first time, you can come back and finish a 2nd time at no cost! ($10 if you come back after that on the same item.) We came just us the first time, and the 2nd time we came back with our son. It is a very different experience with kids vs adults, but either way is fun!

My last visit a few months ago was to see the works of my good friend Rick Bach, a renowned artist who now resides in DC but still does so much work in and around Pittsburgh and our region. The layout is well planned and the usage of an old building adds to the aesthetic of a modern gallery. It's large enough to display big sculptures and other installations. A South Side gem for sure.
