This crawl is hosted by a variety of artists and performers who open their doors to the public for views of their work. There's even a law office turned disco with a dj and empanadas. So many beautiful things for the eye to see while enjoying complimentary snacks and adult beverages. Some venues will have a donation jar out to help cover costs of refreshments. Art, music, friendship and more as you crawl down Penn Avenue. I think this is such a great time for locals and tourists alike.

Sculpture, oil paintings, water colors, fabric pieces, photographs. Just what you'd expect to find in an art space. Often I pop in when walking to Whole Foods on a Saturday afternoon. They regularly participate in the Unblurred First Friday gallery crawls that happen on the first Friday of each month, but are also able to be rented out for private events. The gallery itself is quite a nice space: shiny hardwood floors, the ability to open up the front in nice weather, and an exposed brick wall. They also have a little stage area for live music. The quality of the art they bring in is consistenly quite good as well, and especially on First Friday, you have a good chance of meeting and getting to chat with the artist(s). On First Fridays, they sometimes offer wine tasting from Wilhelm Winery (or have other free booze) and usually have a good sampling of snack-upons.

You could spend just a few minutes or easily spend an hour exploring all the nooks and crannies.. There is no parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking in the area. Just play attention to the signs, because there are areas that are permit only or have restrictions on time.

The Space Upstairs is a loft space above Construction Junction that is home to the (post)modern…read morejazz dance company The Pillow Project. The door is next to Creative Reuse's on N Lexington Avenue. On the second Saturday of every month, the Pillow Project invites people to come and enjoy a lounge atmosphere of dance, live jazz music, and performances involving mixed-media. Alongside that, the space is used for many other events as well, each group giving it its own special charm. I've seen classes, clothing drives, photoshoots, and many other types of events use the loft. The space itself is gorgeous, with the modern coolness you'd expect from a loft belonging to a performance art troupe, combined with the history of Pittsburgh - since it is attached to Construction Junction, you can be sure that just about everything up here has been repurposed. The large windows let tons of natural light in, and the hardwood floors are gorgeous. Scattered over the space there are a few extremely unique pieces of art including a busted up mattress hanging on the wall and a laptop with a tree growing out of it. There is a large bar off to one side infront of two small openings that look down over Construction Junction. Old couches and tables are scattered throughout the space for seating and a small raised platform, infront of the multimedia control center, is also sometimes used for seating. The only problem with the space is that it is somewhat of a weather permitting space - You really feel it in here when it's hot or cold outside. There are huge heaters on the ceiling for the winter but they're very uneven, so beneath them it's burning, and not too far away it's cold again. But that's what you get when you're in such an old building, it's a really minor complaint. There is also a small waiting area downstairs right inside the door. So if you're looking to catch a cool performance, come on the second Saturday of any month and check it out. If you're looking for a neat event space, be sure to ask the Pillow Project for details. On July 31st, my boyfriend and I booked a glass blowing session for 2 people on September 30th at…read more3:30 pm. It was something we have always wanted to do, but it always sold out before we had the chance to. As the glass blowing experience approached, I took the day off work and we coordinated an entire day around the session. We were very excited to go. On September 27th, we received our confirmation email reminding us of our upcoming session. On September 29th at 3:07 pm, we received an automatic cancellation email that our appointment had been cancelled and we needed to reschedule. The email provided no explanation for the cancellation. There was no additional email sent and no contact attempted by phone. Confused, my boyfriend tried the number provided and left a message. He also sent a Facebook message. Concerned, I called the company as well and after 2 calls, reached Janine (spelling?). She explained that they didn't receive the glass supplies needed for the session and that they were cancelling all sessions on Saturday and all sessions on Sunday. I asked if they were going to reschedule or offer an additional session for those who have already signed up. I was informed that I could reschedule after January 1st, 2018 because the rest of the pumpkin workshops were booked. I mentioned that a glass pumpkin wouldn't really do me much good in January and she agreed. I asked if we could come another time instead. She told me that she would speak with the guys who run the workshops and call me back. She didn't seem concerned and it was like she was caught off guard by my questions. On October 4th, I still hadn't heard back. I called the company again and left a voicemail for Janine asking for a return call. Today is October 10th. I just attempted to reach Janine again and it went to her voicemail. I left another message, but it's been 11 days since our first conversation. I don't have high hopes that she will call me back. I understand that things happen. I'm not sure why supplies weren't ordered ahead of time (since we booked 2+ months prior and they had already had a weekend of workshops), but even then I can understand that it might have been out of their control. I'm not an expert in glass supplies, but I would imagine that there has to be more than 1 supplier. All of that aside, there is absolutely no excuse for how it has been handled. I would expect a phone call or email explanation for the cancellation. As a customer, I shouldn't have to make numerous attempts to find out if it was cancelled intentionally or in error. When called, I would expect that a business do everything it can to accommodate those that were cancelled. An additional session could have been opened for those who were still interested in attending a workshop. Ironically, Vessel Studio Glass has a 48 hour cancellation policy in which you will forfeit 100% of your session fee if you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment. They provided only 24 hour cancellation notice to us and were not apologetic in any way. They also did absolutely nothing to try and make it right. I am extremely disappointed with my experience and wish that we would have had the opportunity to attend the workshop that we signed up for.

Clay Cafe is a wonderful little place to paint pottery in Sewickley, PA, a short drive from…read moredowntown Pittsburgh. I went with a group of friends for a low-key kick off a to bachelorette party weekend. It was an adorable little shop in an equally adorable little town. I had inquired ahead of time to bringing our little party to our shop, and they were so welcoming and friendly. They had set up a table for us with balloons and cookies, and allowed us to bring our own wine and snacks. For a $7 fee, you can paint as much as you want - you just pay for the cost of your piece. The pieces are manufactured in a factory, but there are so many to choose from! It's a low-cost, fun, relaxing activity that I would recommend for kids and adults alike. Unfortunately, I don't live in Pittsburgh so I probably won't be able to return, but I'm looking for a similar place where I live!

My last visit a few months ago was to see the works of my good friend Rick Bach, a renowned artist who now resides in DC but still does so much work in and around Pittsburgh and our region. The layout is well planned and the usage of an old building adds to the aesthetic of a modern gallery. It's large enough to display big sculptures and other installations. A South Side gem for sure.
