Twice we were upgraded without even asking, every time we had the jacuzzi bath and a beautiful room, this is an old historical place so it's filled with charm as well and the breakfast was absolutely amazing. The only thing I would say is I wish their dining room was as quaint as the rest of the place. Maybe they should consider that and make it more like the rest of the hotel .

When we did get in, what was supposed to be a double room with two cotts was a twin room: two beds and no cotts. In fact the room was that small, you couldn't have got one cot in it. But where we're quickly moved to a larger room. The room was ok, but being right under the main stairwell was a rather nosy room until about midnight when elephants stopped charing around the hotel...or so it sounded. The breakfast was a good menu but arrived burned and inedible. The surroundings are definitely beautiful and the rooms nice enough but attention to detail a little lacking.

We had a delicious three course meal. It's worth the drive through rolling hills of South Wales even if the day was a bit foggy.

I was impressed even before we arrived as the website is extremely helpful and friendly, including a very good description of how to get here (satnavs can get it wrong without a little human intervention), pictures of all the rooms, as well as loads of ideas of how to spend your time in the Brecon Beacons. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with stunning views across the valley. You are well looked after from the start and all staff seem exceptionally nice and helpful - you know straight away that you have arrived in someone's family home rather than a corporate establishment. All rooms are decorated individually, and contemporary Welsh art can be found throughout the building. I particularly liked the little touches of handmade soap and heated towels in the bathroom, as well as the pile of Wellington boots in the cloakroom reminding me of the rain more typically associated with these parts. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and enjoyed gloriously sunny days cycling up and down the surrounding hills, taking in castle ruins, ancient churches and picturesque villages along the way. We were served lovely three course dinners, ending on an exotic selection of home made icecreams; you can tell how much fun someone is having with the ice cream maker - Malibu and Coconut anyone? The hotel has 10 ensuite bedrooms. We found the rooms clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious but perhaps in need of a little updating. There is not T.V. lounge or rooms solely for the use of hotel guests. However, this is perhaps compensated by a large and comfortable lounge bar. A large T.V. is at one end but this area is seperated off and thus is unobtrusive to those located in the main area. Rev. James and Hancocks H.B. on draft are the pick of the beers. Choice of lagers, wines etc also available. There is also a garden at the back of the hotel for warm and sunny weather. We booked in at the hotel on a half board basis for a whole week and during that time never had a disappointing meal. Good choice of food ranging from local sausages, salmon, half roast duck, crevettes and various steaks. Portions are generous to the point that you may wish to consider a 2 course meal instead of the normal three courses. The fixed price lunchtime menu is excellent value. If available, try the salmon with saffron sauce and Bacardi and Blueberry cheesecake. The website has sample menus. We found the staff friendly and efficient and would happily recommend this inn/hotel to others seeking a reasonably priced establishment in one of the most attractive parts of Wales.

I was recently en route for a walk in the Brecon Beacons when we called in at the Nant Ddu Lodge…read more Situated on the road between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon it is classed as a hotel, bistro and spa. Despite this rather posh description, Nant Ddu is very informal, and as we sat in the cosy bar area, we were made to feel very welcome! They had a wide range of options to choose from on the menu, at reasonable prices. I had the roasted cherry tomato and goat's cheese tartlet, which was only £4.95 (that's cheaper than many starters I've had at other restaurants)! Despite this low price I can honestly say that the tartlet was most delicious there really was the right balance between pastry and cheese. Another thing I appreciated about this establishment, is that all the food is locally sourced and prepared on site; with fresh meat coming in daily from Brecon and fresh fish from Cardiff. After lunch I had a quick peep at the spa area, which with it's pool and jacuzzi looked the perfect spot to chill out!

Love this place and wish we'd found it earlier in our stay in Brecon…read more Genuine pub, genuine people, genuinely funny landlord and landlady and two of the friendliest dogs I've ever met! Oh, and the beer and ale's not bad as well! We visited on a Saturday and had missed the Friday night live music, which we were gutted about because it sounded like a good night had been had by all. The barman was hilarious; he was sneaking a half a lager before his wife came back from walking the dogs. I put it to him that half a lager wouldn't hurt, to which he replied 'it's my fifth half and what the wife'll do to me if she finds out will definitely hurt'. Priceless. They had a guest beer on tap, though I've forgotten it's name. I do remember that it tasted great, though. If we're in Brecon again and fancying a wee tipple, we'll head straight for The Bull's Head and its warm welcome.

Can't remember both beers I had, but one of them was Masters Devons Pride. They were both good. I think I might have eaten the Smoked Haddock & Spring Onion Fishcake too but my memory fails me slightly. I enjoyed whatever I had!
