This will take you on into South Wales. 5 minutes in the opposite direction will take you to the M50 and M5/M6. 1/2 hour north-bound will take you to Hereford/Leominster, while 1/2 hr south-bound will take you to Gloucester/Cheltenham. We were met with a warm reception, and cannot fault the all-round friendly helpfulness of the staff. We found our room to be perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable if not rather small, but have to say that we got the distinct impression that the accommodation side of the business came as a secondary after-thought as most of the focus seemed to be put into the restaurant as the primary consideration. Large parties & weddings seem to take precedence. The food was excellent, well thought out & invitingly presented. I can definately recommend the Sunday Lunch! All in all, this is a reasonably priced, pleasant hotel with eager-to-please owners, and is the perfect base from which to explore the Wye Valley.

The old house is very well kept and as you would expect as you enter. The bedroom I had was a good size with a King size bed (but not necessary as I was the only one in it!). The bathroom was very modern except nowhere for the toilet roll to 'live' and no place for your toothbrush or aftershave to sit. The mirror had LED's in it but didn't work, and the shower floor very slippy (no anti-slip) as I almost when ar** over t**!!!! The swimming pool looked new and inviting (I didn't use as I was here on my own and couldn't be bothered). There was just something missing at every level really. Staff constantly called you 'Sir'... My bathroom had all my stuff on the floor... The breakfast buffet looked nice but actually limited choice but it looked grand because of the setting... Overall very nice, but not my ideal choice (I was here on business so wouldn't choose this myself despite it being a similar price to a top Premier Inn)

It has a wealth of olde-worlde charm & character with it's many low oak-beamed walls & ceilings, stone & wooden floors, huge open log fires and lots of interesting nooks & crannies. It is even reputed to have a secret tunnel running from the cellar to the Saracens Head, another hotel/pub further along the street, and is further reputed to have ghostly residents! The room we stayed in was large & interestingly quirky with a sloped ceiling, and spotlessy clean. Fully equipped with tea/coffee tray & even complimentary bottled mineral water. Also TV, trouser press & direct dial access telephone. Lovely clean bathroom with amazingly soft towels, soap, shower gel etc. Apparently the superior rooms have freeview and flat screen TV's! The old winding staircase leading up to the rooms was rather steep and uneven, but very much in keeping with the 14th centuary charm! That said, this might pose a problem for the elderly or infirm. The bar downstairs is very popular with the locals which is a good sign, & has a lovely warm, inviting & friendly atmosphere. Lots of comfortable seating with armchairs & sofa's, and a roaring log fire. An excellent choice of beers & wines. Our evening meal and breakfast was top-notch with an excellent menu and friendly obliging staff. It did'nt cost a lot either - we paid £80 all-in which was excellent value considering the quality of food, efficient service & the superior ambiance of the hotel itself. To summerize: although only a 2* hotel, it provides 5* sevice - relaxed & welcoming, we will definately be back!
