They have a lovely gazebo outside that makes for a great cigar smoking hut. They also have a nice selection of ales. The second time I went was for a business dinner. We had a room to ourselves and pre-ordered from a set menu. I remember having some kind of rocket and parmesan salad as a starter. Then I had a steak for the main. Lots of people ordered the steak and unfortunately mine was really delayed in coming out... so the rest of the table was not sure if they should start or not. And it was a significant delay because we thought they just had to go back and get it, but I don't think it was finished cooking. For dessert, I cannot remember what I had ordered first, but needless to say it was not available and I had to choose something else from the menu. However, instead of the set menu we had before, I got to choose from the regular selection of desserts and I chose the lemon tart. I think that was really the only part of the meal that stood out to me. I was kind of surprised because a lot of people built up the food, but to be honest, I think I still prefer The Greg. I know I only had one meal there, but I have had the steak at The Greg and I think it was better than the one I had at Chequers. I would, however, be willing to go back and try some of their other dishes.

It's a lovely warm, cosy blanket of a gastropub in the gorgeously picturesque village of Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, just down the hill from the stunning Belvoir castle, and surrounded by the long rolling hills of the vale of belvoir. The village cricket pitch is behind the inn and you can regularly see sheep and horses grazing in nearby fields. It reminds me of an old oil painting of the English countryside - lovely in summer, but perfect when snowed in during a long dark winter's night. Justin and Jo have been running Chequers for ten years and I've probably been at least twice a year every year since 2005. The place has an pub bar area with an open stone fireplace an it's resident mounted boar's head. There are big rustic heavy tables for sharing and browsing the weekend papers. There's a cosy snug, a modern extension restaurant and the large rear function / dining room as well as outside seating at the front and a lovely rear orchard-style outdoor area with tables which is perfect on a hot summer's day. The bar stocks a wide selection of quality beers, wines and spirits including a vast range of whiskey. Food is available either as bar snacks, light meals / deserts in the bar, or full restaurant with lunch and a la carte menus. I've always found the food to be very tasty, full of flavour, extremely well cooked and good value for money. However, if you're after molecular gastronomy or a large vegetarian selection, this is probably not for you. Portions tend to be generous with plenty of sauce / gravy and the puddings (expecially the Sticky Toffee pudding and the Bread and butter pudding) are amazing! Functions and events (including weddings) are catered for and there are a small number of rooms available (although I've never stayed, so can't comment on them). All-in-all this is a hidden gem tucked away in a perfect country idyll. I can't wait to go back.

On the main road, is a large car park, which opens onto the pub's beer garden and the rear entrance. The pub itself dates to the 17th Century and is grade II listed. The facade is pretty as a postcard, with creeper growing over the stone walls. Inside, a fairly thorough makeover gives it a more modern feel, with white and pastels complementing the wooden furniture. They have an a la Carte and fixed price menu. The offering varies from sandwiches and light bites to full meals. I had the garlic mushrooms with grated Parmesan on brioche toast (£7.95), friends had the Locally Sourced Ham, Free Range Fried Eggs & Chips (£10.95); and Beer Battered Haddock with Chips, Peas & Tartar Sauce (£13.95). Although it's a bit pricey, everyone enjoyed the meal and the quality of the food was very good. Service was reasonably quick and efficient. They serve a good range of real ales, too. Recommended.

I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. I heard many of our visiting faculty talk about walking along the canal to the Dirty Duck... also…read moreknown as the Rutland Arms. I had never done it, so one afternoon, work BFF and I decided we were going to walk there and back. We were not sure if it was open, but we at least thought that we would go see it. We walked six miles and it was open! We were thirsty and kind of hungry too, so we popped inside. There were people eating, but when we asked if they were doing any food, they said no... not even cold sandwiches. So we opted for some crisps and a couple of pints. I forgot that I only had my card and no cash, but the lady let us pay with my card anyway. They have lots of seating outside and it has a lovely view of Belvoir Castle. There are public toilets, a large car park, a play area for the kids, and it is right on the canal so if you are walking, you can stop for refreshments.
