On Friday the 23rd of September my son very kindly organised a surprise treat for my 80th birthday. He booked a table for 4 at The Manners Arms in Knipton. When we arrived at the hotel there was a large wedding reception taking place. My son had made a special effort to book a nice table for myself and the family. But because of the hotel being full with wedding guests the waiter told us that the only table available for us was in the very crowded, noisy bar area. When we suggested that this was not acceptable as we had pre-booked a table in the restaurant and were not happy with being placed in the middle of a wedding party the manager simply shrugged off the matter, and in a very off handed manner told us "the wedding had been booked two years in advance". There was no apology, or attempt by her to rectify the situation. When booking we should have been told that the hotel would be full and been given the option to choose wether to book at the Manners or not. If we'd known we would have, without doubt, gone somewhere else. Which is in fact what we ended up doing. Luckily we found ourselves at the Martin Arms in Colton Bassett where the food and service were excellent. In a modern competitive restaurant market to be treated in this way, quite simple, shouldn't happen. I strongly advise anyone thinking of booking here that they should think twice about it. If the manager doesn't really care about the people she's serving, imagine what the food will be like. read more
