The Chequers Inn on Main St provided a memorable setting for our giant writer retreat dinner. We were comfortably accommodated in a reserved room featuring a long table, perfect for our large group. The decor was undeniably charming, particularly the delightful framed drawings of donkeys sporting puffer jackets - a unique and amusing touch that definitely sparked conversation!
For my meal, I opted for the rare ribeye steak, which was cooked beautifully to my liking - tender and full of flavor. It paired wonderfully with a glass of their Merlot, a smooth and enjoyable choice. For dessert, I indulged in both the Cherry Bakewell, where the almond frangipane was perfectly balanced with the tart cherry, and the accompanying sorbet, which was exceptionally refreshing. I also couldn't resist trying the classic sticky toffee pudding, which was rich, decadent, and utterly satisfying.
I unfortunately had a bloody nose during the middle of dinner. I was incredibly grateful for the immaculately clean bathroom, which was well-stocked with plenty of paper towels. More importantly, the staff were so kind and understanding, offering assistance with genuine concern. Their discreet and helpful response during an awkward moment truly highlighted their excellent hospitality. This was how I found out there was a wedding happening during our dinner.
Adding to the Inn's character, there was a wedding celebration taking place in one of the private rooms. It was lovely to catch a glimpse of the bride when she stopped by the bathroom when I was staunching the flow of my bloody nose. She was an older lady radiating pure joy and happiness in her wedding dress - a truly heartwarming moment.
