The Croydon Hotel, Tuesday 26-01-2016…read more This establishment was once operated by the ALH group (Woolworths Ltd) is now operated by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) group which has the Caulfield, Mornington and Sandown Racecourses and 13 hotel venues around Melbourne including this one. I had completed a shift in the kitchen with the other chefs during the previous operators, so it was interesting to observe the changes completed to the Croydon Hotel. On arrival there is a pleasant change to the exterior of the building and some simple garden beds just outside of the front door. On entering the front door there is a warmth of natural light coming from the newly renovated bistro dining room. The kitchen has been moved from the northern side of the building to the western side of the building, this has allowed for the bistro to be on one level opening up to a deck looking north allowing that great natural light into the bistro. There are two large copper tanks on the left hand side as you enter the bistro and copper tubing running to the bar in the middle of the room. This is all concerned with the association the MRC has with Carlton and United Breweries and the sale of the "Brewery Fresh" Carlton Draught. The bar is a well illuminated with a light grey marble style feature and wood paneling and wood shelving which give the bar a good grounding in the middle of room. There is the 'Trendy' feature of the plant stand in the middle of the dining room which we I questioned in the past with other establishments and will question again, why! As there is some small potted herbs waiting to grow and trying to catch some direct sun light in the middle of the dining room which they will never get. There is also a charging area on this stand for the waiters note pads that they us to obtain the orders. This I found distracting, like any other hand held device is in a dining room the glow of these mobile devises detracted from the dinning experience. The waiters note pads would have better placed near the kitchen, away from sticky fingers of the smaller inquisitive diners and then remove the plant stand to fully open up the dining room to flow the warmth around the dining room. The carpet is a slightly psychedelic patterned with yellow streaks' through it which detracts from the dining room and is not a calming effect that would be more beneficial. The Tables and chairs were a mix of light colored wood stain and some dark stained, which again mixes up the room and again, why. We dined at lunch time on Australian day with the dining room about a 3rd covered, the waiters were covering the room with efficiency, good poise when coming to the table, at tentative without being overbearing well presented in the good bistro waiter attire and good knowledge of the menu. the two meals that was ordered were the Chicken Saltimbocca and the Grilled Salmon. The Chicken Saltimbocca with pea risotto cake. This dish needed another vegetables such as an oven roasted tomato, beetroot, brocollini or similar to brighten up the dish and give some diversity. The dish needed some sauce to moisten and to carry the dish, especially after consuming the chicken I was left with the risotto, which is good green pea risotto but it was only green pea risotto. My wife had the Grilled Salmon with sweet potato puree & cherry. Again the dish needed more of the pesto as a sauce as the dish became dry by the end, there was no crispy skin on the salmon and the salmon was a little over cooked so a again dry by the finish of the dish. There was no wine list and the wine was by the glass with no bottle prices listed and when I asked the barman he was not fully across the list and prices, which was a bit disconcerting. So we decided on the Yarra Ridge - Sauvignon Blanc which was a light crisp, with citrus and floral notes which was a very good example of a Yarra Valley style of the Sauvignon Blanc. Today there were no desserts on the menu just cakes on display so the dessert was missed by us. Although there was a persistent fly in the dining room which did detracted from the experience we look for the positives in that the dining room which was still under renovations when we visited so it will be good to return to appreciate the full vision of the newly renovated Croydon Hotel and see this establishment move forward.

The service is excellent. The waiting staff are polite, informative and do everything they can to make your experience pleasant. The food is beautiful. I normally grab either a chicken schnitzel or the roast of the day, and they are always really well presented and taste wonderful. A bit on the expensive side (with mains starting at $23.50), but it's a great place to go with family for special occasions. Make sure you book in advance. You can now book through their website, too.

Everyone is so friendly, and because a lot of the people who come here are members of the RSL, you see the same familiar faces time and time again so it feels like a tight-knit little community all on its own. As a member, you get really good discounts on drinks at the bar plus other special offers in the restaurant like a free meal in the restaurant on your birthday. There's also a coffee/tea/hot chocolate machine and a biscuit jar that you can help yourself to for free. This is right next to the pokies machines so it must be to help keep everyone's sugar levels up whilst they're gambling their savings away. Apparently they put on quite a New Year's Eve event here as well. Good times. I just think this place is cool for taking care of my folks and making them happy.

Turn up for the movies a little too early? Did your movie end earlier than you wanted your evening…read moreto? Are you being dragged to a movie you know isn't going to be any good without at least a couple of drinks in you? This is your place. It's just across from the cinemas, so it's got a pretty decent location. The bar staff are pretty friendly, and you rarely have to wait long to get a drink. There is plenty of seating to sit down and have a quiet one with a few mates. There's plenty of pokies too, if that's your thing. I won $20 a few weeks ago there. The décor is pretty normal suburban pub style. In a nutshell, it's pretty relaxed, comfortable, convenient if you're going to the cinema, and most importantly, the beer is cold.

At that sort of time, it's quite surreal. The bar looks and feels as if it's open at 5pm on a Wednesday afternoon, yet it's getting to the wee hours. Very strange. I would have described it as a sports bar. Perhaps this is because I've never actually been in one, so seeing a large number of men all camped inside watching the soccer at 1am on a Monday morning is a pretty good indicator to me. It gets definite props for being open at said time. I like to run away from my house and go on late night adventures, and unfortunately my only option for food/drink at that time of night is McDonalds. Nice to know there is somewhere I can go for a quiet sit down chat and a cup of tea/cider if I'm awake. I don't think the staff are especially cluey (but then again, I'm spoilt by city bars). The decor reminds me of an airport waiting lounge and there's a huge emphasis on the gambling. It's still a nice place to pop in to, though, and to forget the world outside for a little while.

I guess the fact that they had a nice beer on tap did change my opinion about the place. They also have a courtyard in the middle of the pub, but that is basically for the smokers, so I probably wouldn't consider it to be anything like a beer garden as such. Still, this is basically just a fairly tacky pub with pokie machines, a sports bar, and a rather large bistro. Yeah, it really isn't something that stands out, but as I suggested, it is better than some of the other ones I've been too.

If you're after a meal for a large group, Zagames has the space and staff to ensure everyone is happy, with an up market and open take on traditional bistro dining. The menu changes often, serving pub staples and specialty items alike, and taking one look around the room will tell you that this is the place where locals like to take the kids and still eat a decent meal. To the side of the bistro area is a kid's room, where you can let them play while you have a drink after tea in peace, or if it's your scene, head into the pokies to throw your money down the drain. Zagames in Boronia is open until 4am every night, showing the locals love for late night gambling and drinking. You can get food in the bar area, with pub grub like chips and toasted sandwiches served late into the night.
