The last time I was here was just for one of the counter meals in the bar, we had glasses of cider and shared a selection of entrees. The lamb skewers were amazing with a superb mint sauce by the bollywood balls were as boring as a samosa without a shell. The head chef, Troy Payne likes to experiment and mix in middle-eastern elements to his cooking. The Post Office Hotel has changed a great deal since the gold rush days when it was on the road to the Bendigo gold fields. Now it is a foodies pub with a pleasant family atmosphere. On the pool table behind us granddad is going to teach his grandchildren how to play pool, the kids are young and haven't before and granddad helps them but he doesn't let them win, just as we finish eating he pots the black. On the previous occasion that I went to the Post Office Hotel it was for J's birthday and we ate in the restaurant part where the service and dinning is more formal and the food is truly amazing. All the dishes on the menu are intended to be shared between two people or more people. It was an amazing dinner especially the double cooked duck.

It gets so crowded in here on weekends, and that's because the food here is really worth traipsing up to Coburg for. I've tried several dishes now but the winning dish is the green bean tagine. Firstly, it rhymes. Secondly, what do they put in this? It is so damn tasty. And the serving is huge too. My man and I always say that next time we're there we should share one green bean tagine between us because that would be plenty food for us both, but we always give in once we've eyed up the menu and seen what we'd be missing if we didn't order at least one main each plus a couple of sides, and maybe dessert too. I like the courtyard out back. It's a good size with large tables, heaters and some lovely greenery. I've never stuck around for the bands, I've always found it a bit too crowded inside to want to linger and listen, but I reckon they must put on some good bands seeing that the pub is owned by a bunch of musicians. It's also really child-friendly here.

Found further out on Sydney Road is a wonderful bar called the Post Office Hotel. I'm assuming it was once a post office, though there is not sign of the original post officeness anywhere. Instead the walls are adorned with legendary Melbourne rock posters - the heavyweights like You Am I, Beasts of Bourbon and more. It is said that the legendary Tex Perkins owns this pub, and after years of being both sides of the bar I'd like to think that was one of his ideas. The other may be the locals brews on tap, absolute winners all round. The place is divided into three sections, four including the bottle shop next door. The front bar you'll find on Sundays stocked with a duo or trio playing great Sunday arvo tunes. One such arvo was 50s rockin's classics that then morphed into the best cover of Where Is My Mind (yes, The Pixies) I've heard in a while. Sunday also sees lots of mums and bubs, young families making the most of the tunes and the sunshine. Behind that is the more formal dining section of the pub, all candle lit and intimate. About twenty tables with most of the them filled on popular nights. And out the back we have the pub staple known as the Beer Garden! Simplicity is the name of the game indeed. The menu, while quality all round, doesn't stock to many vegetarian options. The felafel is a winner and there's a wicked Ratatouille-esque thing that is absolutely amazing, but the rest are your parma, burger and more - high quality pub food and its best. My friend pointed out some food aficionados in here, the likes of which don't usually leave the inner city. Good sign, very good sign.

My counter order of a green papaya salad would have been delicious except for the fact that the poop-chute was left on the (large) prawns.

Having not seen it before, and pretty much picking it out as one of those trendy innercity bars (not that Preston could be considered inner city, but it is on the south side of Bell Street, so as far as I'm concerned that pretty much classifies it as inner city) I decided to check it out. I have to say that as soon as I stepped into the warehouse (it looks like it used to me a mechanic of some sort) I was immediately impressed. This is definitely the type of bar that I could spend a lot of time sitting with friends or just reading a good book. What's even better is that you can order food from the burger joint next door and they have no issue with you eating it here. Definitely on my must visit again sometime soon list.

Are we in some kind of alternative hospitality universe here, or what!? The Raccoon Club is incredible: a warehouse styled building in the middle of seemingly nowhere (but conveniently located right in front of a tram stop) this is the kind of place that more neighbourhoods need. A huge space, great tunes, welcoming publicans, board games, a pool table, the option to call the local thai/pizza/indian and have them deliver it right to your couch or oversized bar stool...you're going to want to silently high-five the world when you first come here, and that's before you even think about having a drink. Is that a giant list of locally crafted beers and ciders I spy? Why yes, I think it is. And hang on a second, what's with the incredibly well stocked back bar? 15 types of Gin? Weird stuff I've never heard of? Good god, can I bring my tent and pitch it in the corner for a few weeks?
