My family tried to have a 75 person funeral luncheon here back in May, we called about a week or so before the funeral. We went over and met with the planner and said we would be in contact in a day or two. Called up and no one answered, so we left a message to have them call us back; even tried the planner's cell phone they gave us and left a message. Waited a day, still no answer; so at this point it's the weekend and we haven't heard a response yet. So we called again over the weekend, still no answer; Monday called again and still no answer; at this point we are panicking because we don't have a place for the luncheon. Finally, Tuesday comes and they call back (the funeral is now two days away on Thursday) and they planner says they can't do it because they don't have the staff to work the luncheon. You waited that long to respond to us and then say we can't do it because of short notice to get staff. Absolutely pathetic and unprofessional this whole thing was handled, luckily we had backup restaurant in mind and they were able to handle the luncheon and only with two days to prep and get their staff together, plus it was cheaper than this place. Someone there needs to get their priorities straighten because of you offer a funeral luncheon option and you know how quick funeral planning can be a quick turnaround period and a very stressful one to boot, you should be able to accommodate and get staff. read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. Went with 16 people to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary. The ambiance is great with high ceilings and lots of open space. The service was very efficient and friendly. Best of all, they somehow managed to serve us all at the same time and kept everyone's glasses full. The food is excellent. My mother had the lobster and it had a ginormous amount of meat in it. My dad had the salmon and he said it was excellent too (it looked good to me). I wanted something light and my entre was white bean stuffed ravioli. It was great. The skin of the ravioli had a great texture too it and tasted very fresh. I definitely recommend. This place is a great value as well. Considering the great atmosphere and excellent food, the prices are very very reasonable. Lastly, unlike many establishments, they did not put an automatic tip on despite the fact that there were 16 of us. Cafe Madison is a gem; a deep, refined onyx cave of wonder. The interior brings together industrial structure with elegantly high ceilings and quiet waterfalls that run down granite walls. The restaurant's masthead, a sleek lady holding up a martini glass, stands behind the ceiling to floor waterfall in the main dining room. From the cafe's martini bar in the back comes the voice of one piano-playing man with the vocal abilities to deliver with equal talent songs by Louis Armstrong and Elton John. He's sure to entertain diners from several decades. And the food! Every dish is decently proportioned and spot on with taste. The bacon & egg appetizer puts a simple, yet unique twist on typical eggs and bacon with braised pork in a savory barbeque sauce with a quail egg atop brioche toast. The tortellini comes with a champagne truffle cream, and the beef medallion is amazing. The autumn harvest salad waltzes on the tongue with a quince viniagrette and bartlett pears that compliment the brie wonderfully. Lobster and jumbo lumb crab cakes taste as good as they sound. Two of them come accompanied by supremely braised carrots and string beans. This dish is only slightly preferable to the seared day boat scallops; however, the shrimp andouille ravioli ultimately evens the playing field. Praise for the applewood smoked rib eye hangs in the air, and most diners seem to find themselves overtaken by silence and happy thoughts of leftovers. Every other plate in sight is empty. read more

After an internet search turned up this restaurant as one open for Thanksgiving, we made reservations here for the Thanksgiving buffet. Not wanting to chance it with a place we'd never seen before, we made reservations two nights prior and had dinner to check it out. When the manager Diane called on Tuesday to confirm our Thanksgiving reservation, I told her that were probably going to visit them for dinner that night, to which she replied that we could find a two-for-one entree coupon in the newspaper that day. Nice touch! I'm from the area but have lived in Manhattan for over 20 years, and enjoy the city for all the fine dining options we have. Imagine my surprise when I stepped into The Madison, a restaurant that looks as though it would easily be found at a place like the Borgata, or in center city Philly or Manhattan. It is, as others say in the reviews, simply stunning but very relaxing ad not at all pretentious, with an open kitchen, high ceilings and festive holiday decorations. A pianist was playing when we arrived, and we were seated right away. Our server was lovely and the food was top notch. Two in our party had the pork, another had the steak, and I had the scallops which were the largest I'd ever seen and were cooked just perfectly (so many have a tendency to overcook and ruin them). The presentation of the dishes was appetizing, and we felt that the prices are spot-on for the quality you get. We were excited to return for Thanksgiving. They had the buffet on Thanksgiving in the event room, which was light colored and bright and airy, again with high ceilings and a fireplace near our table. Nice music topped off the ambiance. They offered the usual Thanksgiving trappings of turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and stuffing, alongside other dishes such as Salmon Puttanesca, Tuscan Braised Chicken, Steak Au Poivre, Pork Loin and Mushroom Ravioli, in addition to a large antipasti spread of delicious items such as artichoke, red peppers and garlic, olives and a nice selection of charcuterie. I'm sure there are more dishes I've missed, there were so many. I find it amazing that every single dish on this buffet was full of flavor, juicy and delicious. Not at all dry, which dishes tend to become after sitting in buffet warming stations. Our server (I think her name was Teresa) was wonderful, checking that we were ok for drinks at the perfect times and not rushing us at all. The desserts were, again, out of this world. This is one of my favorite restaurants. My husband and I come here for our rare "date nights" when we have no kids and want to hear nice music (they often have a live piano player and on Friday nights a great jazz band!) and eat great food. The menu is so tempting that we almost always get an appetizer. One of my favorites is the Seared Yellow Fin Tuna. Even the salad that accompanies it is phenomenal. I have also had the Butternut Squash soup and the Lobster Bisque and they are both fantastic as well. I try to get a new entree each time I go but the Bronzino (which I get a lot because it's not available everywhere) usually calls me back. The martinis are delicious as well. I often try whichever special that they have that day. My husband is wine drinker and usually has something red with his meal (which is almost always the Delmonico with the Lobster Mac and Cheese). This restaurant has a wonderful ambiance and an attentive staff and I always look forward to spening our date nights here. I highly recommend The Madison. read more

The Halgas family has always taken special care of my mom and she frequents this place often given she works nearby. From steak to chicken and fish I have continously been satisfied with my entrees. Very disappointed in the food !! The restaurant has such a great vibe and could be spectacular, however the food leaves a lot to be desired. The Short Rib with Ravioli was a bowl of raviolis in broth with shredded meat... The chicken francaise was the worst Ive ever eaten. No lemon , not sure what the sauce was, and a chicken breast as opposed to a chicken cutlet. Service was ok, but it was very slow for a Friday night. I guess that should have been a warning.. I notified our server regarding we were not pleased with our food and was told she'd pass the message Ali g, but never offered to serve us something different. Madison is a very impressive looking restaurant, great atmosphere, huge dining room floor plan with probably 25 foot ceilings. Bar area is kinda cramped in the far corner. Service was slow. The entree menu was a little limited for such a large place and prices as you would expect range from $25-$35/plate. Service on this particular night was not acceptable. We had early reservations 5:45pm with a party of five, so there was no reason for slow service. The dining room was nearly empty when we sat down. The waiter was not professional and very slow. It took about 20 minutes or more to get a long island iced tea, waiter brought me an app I didn't order and he actually talked back to us suggesting that our dining location was difficult to get to, etc. We ended up with free desserts after the manager came over to ask how things were out of earshot of the waiter. I was not terribly impressed with the food (bland) despite the raving reviews. You know something's wrong when the hot crusty rolls are the best part of the meal. I'd be willing to revisit since I expect our experience wasn't the norm at Madison. On this particular night, the band Don't Call Me Francis was playing with a $20 cover and $15 in advance. Really??? Fortunately it was free with paid dinner receipt but I wouldn't see this asinine band for free. We elected not to stay. They should pay me $20 on this night. Despite our less than stellar experience, Madison is still worth checking out. Known for their martini's, it would be a great upscale hang out if the place had a happy hour and/or drink specials. With Lafayette street location, parking is a mix of street and lot. I suspect it can take you quite a while to find suitable parking later at night on a weekend. I found this place when doing a search for restaurants in the area. I must say the decor here is awesome, I love the brick walls and high ceiling. The dim lighting makes it the perfect date location. While we were dining there was a pianist playing, he played today's hits (which I really enjoyed). The food was okay, a bit pricey in my opinion. The portions are small, and I left there hungry! Oh my, what a pleasant surprise in South Jersey! From the outside, The Madison doesn't look like anything special. Plain brick exterior, across the street from the train tracks. Not impressive from the get go but once you walk in... wow, not what I was expecting at all. High ceilings, cozy booths and decadent decor with the right amount of class. Everything is well executed and professional in appearance. The staff were attentive from the get-go, not pushy but just the right amount of presence. I like that there are different parts to the Madison, specifically the outdoor patio area! I would love to come back when a roaring fire is going and the weather is more forgiving. I only had drinks while watching a family friend perform on a Saturday night after Thanksgiving, but there was a nice variety of people from different background. The food sounded quite tasty, nothing over the top, just the perfect balance of upscale offerings and comfort food. I would love to go back to The Madison and check out the cuisine! Beautiful venue. It's a shame that it is not in the best location for this type of establishment. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous and huge. There's a fireplace and ample parking in the back. The dining area is equally massive, with an all purpose room adjacent to it. There is a downstairs wine cellar, which is also great for a dinner party. Overall, I totally enjoyed this place. I had a salad, 3 raviolis, crab cakes, and an apple fritter thing for dessert (rehearsal dinner). Overall it was a great experience. One thing to note - there were some kids in our party there - they had kids plates. I must say, those kids plates were awesome. The chicken fingers were awesome, the mozzarella sticks were awesome, and the french fries were really really really good. I'd say I would've preferred the kids plate! But don't take that as an indictment of their adult meals, it's just I have such a soft spot for comfort food! read more

My family came here for my mother's birthday and it was a massive let down. The service was very poor and there was hair found in multiple plates. When we informed our server about it and she brushed it off. The food was unimpressive to say the least and was not brought out in a timely manner. After my mother spoke to the manager about the situation they comped two of our meals, but seemed to have pushed us out after. Our bill was immediately brought to us with out even asking if we wanted another round of drinks, and our plates were taken with food still on them without asking if we were finished. My parents have been coming here for years but noted the quality has been steadily declining. As a first timer, I was shocked by the poor overall quality of our experience. read more

We hosted my best friend's bridal shower here and it was just fantastic. From booking the event to day of, everything was easy and everyone I interacted with was helpful and accommodating. They allowed us to host the event outdoors in their GORGEOUS courtyard due to COVID, and you would have thought that that was the plan all along! Not to mention, the food was delicious! My husband and I ate here for Valentine's Day. I had seen this restaurant on open table a few times and had been really excited to try it. We both felt like we were at a wedding. They had live music for the holiday and we were sat right next to the "band" so when they sang we were unable to talk because it was so loud that i couldn't hear anything my husband was saying. There were all tables for 2 set up facing the band/dance floor and most couples were slow dancing, which really isn't our scene, so that's why we felt like we were at a wedding. They had a prefix menu for Valentine's Day. I had the salad as a first course and it was just okay. It was spring mix with maybe 3 or 4 candied walnuts. Not much dressing so it was very dry. My main course was the islandic cod and I thought it was great. It came with vegetables and they were okay. My husband had the calamari (very good) and filet (was only okay). We are not dessert eaters. but it came with the meal and that was good. We had the cheesecake and chocolate trilogy. The service started off good but then went downhill. I know we went on a busy day, but it took 30-40 minutes from when we received our dessert to receive our check, and that was only because I had to chase down the server. Other tables around us were also waiting just as long. Another table had the manager come by because he had ordered a drink and it was 15 minutes later and still hadn't received it. My husband and I would have been fine staying that long (dinner ended up being 2 hours) if we were being checked on/drinks being refilled, but no one ever came back to check on us. We really were only checked on when each course came out. But never in between to see if we wanted another round of drinks or anything. I'm glad I tried it here, but don't think we would come back. I also read a review that it's an older crowd and would agree. My husband and I are in our mid-30s and we definitely felt like we were 20+ years younger than everyone else. read more

I just left my visit at dinner here. I was excited to go back here after not visiting for a few years. Well, I should have stayed away longer. First, the tables for two are extremely small. So if you're a big person you won't have a lot of room... Ok no big deal there but thought I'd mention it. Our server, Eva was ok. She was honest about the menu, polite. So that was fine. Now onto the food. First, we were served bread that was hard as a rock. We sent it back. Second, my significant other ordered filet... Now, it was severely under cooked for how she ordered it. She opted to take home rather that eat it. She will cook it further. The potatoes were a little soupy... Fine line there folks. The green beans were under cooked. The lobster bisque had no lobster and was not mixed completely. Now my meal. I ordered the veal porterhouse. Really tasty meat. Big bone just like a T-bone steak. For everyone, I don't chew down to the bone. I save that last 3 to 4 ounces, maybe more for last. I then usually carve it up. So how can you ruin it?... Well, try not having the salt shaker top on right. So I ended up with all this salt all over the rest of the steak. Now the server said at least you're done, which I wasn't but was not going to eat any more after all that salt.... I didn't want to eat it in two years. I wanted to eat it then. Here's the shocker. You would have thought that the manager would have came up and said sorry. I guess they don't give a hoot. In case they have any brains and are look at these reviews, here are my comments to them: I can spend my money anywhere. There are so many good places to eat. I haven't been here in a while but all my previous experiences have been good. I just came here for drinks. Asked for Sauvignon Blanc and the bartender said no problem. She brings me this resort wine that tasted terrible. I told her the wine wasn't good and she said it's the only one they had. Doesn't this place have a wine cellar? Why are they serving crappy wine at the bar. We all switched to beer and left after the second drink. Why doesn't this have a wine menu for the bar with 5 or 6 wines to choose from. Having grown-up in the next town over, Riverside has had a reputation for being a little 'rough around the edges' (not a dining destination) so I was hesitant to visit this restaurant. This cafe is located in the heart of the downtown (it's safe), easily accessible from the Tacony Palmyra, Betsy Ross & Ben Franklin bridges. The NJ Riverline Light Rail train has a station close-by to the restaurant (walking distance). Also, the Riverline transfers to the PATCO line at the Walter Rand Transportation Center (I think). I was pleasantly surprised when I first dined at Cafe Madison. The inside of the main dining room is really nice, has an upscale feel to it (larger than expected compared to seeing it from the outside). It has a vaulted ceiling. It has a cool looking martini bar with a waterfall and a piano. It has a open-air kitchen. The food is always excellent (both the specials and the regular menu). The servers have always been on-point. They cleared the dishes off the table in a timely fashion. The servers gave us the right mix of attention and space. The appetizers & courses were spaced-out perfectly. A few items that we like are the 'Crudo of Wild Salmon and Ahi Tuna with Mango, Papaya & Lime', the 'Roasted Summer Ravioli', 'The Asian Glazed Wild Salmon' and the 'Grilled Porterhouse'. I am looking forward to returning, I am a fan! (I am willing to travel the distance from my home). This place is a solid 4.5 stars. read more

The Madison cafe continues to Amaze me ...Today chef Jacques, Formally of the Playboy Club in California, ,Surprise me with the Tomahawk Steak Dinner with Large Lobsterr Tail, which is not on the menu. He brings them out on the weekend, he said. I did not know what to eat after speaking with Chef, i knew that i had to have it. 32oz Tomahawk, Salad, sides and 16 oz Lobster Tail. Both were mouth watering, cooked to my specifications, with sauteed onions and mushrooms.. i totally recommend this establishment for GREAT FOOD, Friendly Family Environment, Great workers that are will to make you ANYTHING. THEY AIM TO PLEASE... You can sit in the Towne Tavern portion of the Madison and still get served what you desire form the Madison Cafe Menu or Off Menu. Did i mention the atmosphere... To Die For.. If the Winddrft, in Stone Harbor, NJ was in Riverside, it would be the Madison Cafe. This is my first ever review, i hope I can add a picture... We went to celebrate my birthday and it was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Our waitress was excellent. We didn't order drinks and stayed with just ice tea and she promptly refilled our drinks when needed. We ordered the bang bang shrimp and they were delightful. I was afraid they might be too spicy, but they were on the mild side and were very good. We both had the caprese salad and the tomatoes were so fresh and delicious, along with the balsamic drizzle. Our steaks were so moist & juicy and cooked to perfection. Everything on the plate was served hot. Our waitress was very attentive and hopefully we can ask for her on our next visit. read more

I ate dinner at the Cafe Madison tonight with my parents. We actually stumbled upon it by accident on our way somewhere else, but I'm glad we did. They brought a basket of bread and butter to the table. They were light and fluffy and still warm. So good! We decided to go with the price-fixe menu- 4 courses for $35. we shared our appetizers- calamari & mussels, bang bang tempura shrimp, and soup de jour. They were all great. The calamari/mussels came in a delicious red tomato sauce and had plenty to share. The bang bang shrimp had a nice tempura coating. They fell a bit short on the spice, but they were tasty for sure. The soup tonight was tomato and it was good. For our meals we all got the pepper crusted sirloin. I got mine medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. We did ask for salt and pepper though, since the steak was a bit under seasoned. It came on mashed potatoes with a side of green beans and both were very yummy. I cleaned my plate. For dessert we split the beignets, salted caramel cheese cake, and chocolate bread pudding. The only one I wouldn't get again is the bread pudding. It wasn't very chocolatey but still nice. The beignets were fabulous. The ambiance of the restaurant and the service were both outstanding. I would love to come back here for another meal. The attire is dressy casual. We were slightly under dressed. We got there around 6 and there was no wait. By 7 there was a large number of people coming in. I would recommend a reservation any time from 7 on. read more

My family and I went to the Cafe Madison on Mother's Day. We had some of the worst service as we waited 40 minutes past the reservation time to be seated. The manager treated my wife disrespectful when we were finally seated. He then later did not address the situation when we complained our appetizers were cold. We used to go to the Madison for some high quality food but recently we have noticed the quality has steadily declined. On top of that the service is awful and even rude. What a great place for a group luncheon. We held a ladies luncheon for about 50 people at the Madison in December. Everything went well. The room was beautiful and the food was delicious. Everyone on the staff was easy to work with and very accommodating from making the arrangements though set up and serving on the day of the event. I was a member of the bridal party for a wedding recently held at Cafe Madison. Food and atmosphere were good. Service was poor. Because the ceremony and reception were both being held there, we were told we could arrive at 10am to start getting ready. It was 10:20 before any staff arrived to unlock the doors. The "wedding planner," Jessica, spent more time meeting with other potential clients than anything else. After she attacked the VERY nervous bride 1hr before the ceremony, grilling her and insisting that her counts were wrong, I wish I could have forewarned the unsuspecting souls that were paraded through our prep space a couple hours earlier. (Picture this: beautiful young bride, trembling with nerves, 2 glasses of champagne down, trying to add up table counts because TWO tables that were supposed to have 10 guests really only had 8.) Lucky for Jessica, the bride is sweeter and more blissfully unaware of how poorly she was treated than more seasoned bridal party vets. Hope she puts her tip to good use . read more

I actually lived in Riverside for 2 years. In those 2 years I can honestly say that even though I heard of Cafe Madison it never once dawned on me to actually give this restaurant a try. It just sits soo sadly in between a forgotten intersection right across from the train tracks in a town that seemed soo sadly up to date. It wasn't until we were looking up places to have my sister in laws baby shower was when I actually suggested we have it at Cafe Madison because 1. location, although I was no longer a resident of Riverside, the restaurant was within 3 miles from where we now reside and it would be an easy trip considering all the decorations and supplies I had to bring to the restaurant before the party started. and 2. they have a bar service.... lol As I walked in all I could think to myself was... Shame on me. The restaurant was gorgeous! I can't believe I could have been a riverside resident for 2 years and never once wander into this establishment! They have an AMAZING outdoor bar and dining experience well equipped with an outdoor fireplace, numerous outdoor patio heaters and sometimes they have a guy playing the guitar to soften the mood! Indoors they had a really nice bar, with a running waterfall that trickled down right above it, a piano right across from the bar and everything so precisely arranged. The kitchen is an open layout inviting it's guests to take part in seeing how things were made, prepared and detailed. I couldn't believe how clean the kitchen looked! Just gives me another reason why I love this place soo much. The employees were great! Everyone who was working that evening was as good as good can get when it comes to great help! Not to forget the food, the food.... a...frickin...mazing. I'll leave it at that. Well maybe I'll leave it at - dont forget to buy the french onion soup! Cafe Madison's unlikely location, just off the historic main drag in Riverside -a town in the midst of a Renaissance- is part of its appeal. The brick Federalist-style exterior of the building, which predicts a stuffy interior, provides not-a-clue of what really lies within. After being greeted by a friendly host, your senses are caught off-guard by a high-ceiling modern design. A combination of clean pendant lamps, funky suspended ornamentation, and illuminated water features transport you into an uber-hip Manhattan nightspot. Our dinner was an incredibly enjoyable feast, including the ahi appetizer, Asian salad, steaks, and variety of sides. The wine and martini menu was extensive. The quality of the food & drink was as extraordinary and unexpected as the interior. Cafe Madison provided big-city dining and ambiance without the big city traffic and price-tag. read more
