The staff were so nice and didn't make too much conversation but just enough. It's cozy inside. Not a ton of seating. We sat next to the window looking at the rushing river. The food was GREAT!! The soup of the day was potato bacon. Homemade. Came with garlic bread, also fresh made bread. Got the hamburger to share!! Again great!! Would have liked French fries instead of the home fries. Not too many options available around here but we were camping a few minutes down the road and had no plans to try cooking a meal by fire (and mosquitoes). It's a large place inside but the tables were set up a bit oddly. It wasn't the most efficient use of space, but maybe that's good because the kitchen could hardly keep up with the few tables that were here. Let me start by saying though that the people who work here are really nice. Very friendly! It took about 25 minutes for anyone to come take our order and it was another about 35 minutes to get our first appetizer.. I ordered a salad. So I was a bit frustrated with the wait. The salad was heavily dressed but at that point we were so hungry I don't think we cared much. It took some time before we saw our mains. I think we were there for just over an hour before one of our main dishes came out. I was a little annoyed that they didn't apologize or even check in on us. I will say too, don't expect anything spectacular in terms of the food. You're at a motel style diner in the middle of no where. My partners pasta was completely over cooked to mush and sadly my burger was burned... We really didn't want to send it back and end up waiting another hour though so we just ate what we could. Cozy restaurant located near Algonquin Park. I stopped here after a long day of hiking and the owners were very pleasant. The wrap and soup I had was very good, and Mad Musher offers a good selection of local craft beers. There's also a good selection of souvenirs and artwork from the region. The owners and staff were extremely nice, and the gentleman showed us some fantastic photos he'd taken of wolves around the park. One of the limited food options in Whitney and as such, don't expect to be blown away. I had read from other people it may be a bit of a wait for your food, and they were spot on. The place was pretty full when we got there and we had to wait for a table, but one once seated, service was prompt. However, it took nearly 45 minutes to get our food. I managed to finish my beer long before my food arrived; no small feat for me because I baby sit my beer. The fettuccine alfredo was ok, chicken stir fry was mediocre at best but at least it had veggies so we don't die of scurvy while on vacation, and the mac and cheese needed seasoning. I think what they do well are their burgers. There were no complaints on the bison burger. The desserts are outsourced and for whatever reason, butter tarts are a big thing around here. The place is overpriced, limited with options yet pretentious with what they serve, run down, chairs falling apart to the point they should be in the trash and the ones that are just ok are so sticky I don't think they've ever been wiped. Tried to order breakfast on a very rainy morning, was given a menu with 4 options, we just wanted basic eggs, bacon and toast all of which were components in the 4 menu options @ $14 but they refused, we paid for our 2 coffees $6.75 and left, WE WILL NEVER BE BACK. Stopped for lunch after a bit of hiking based on recommendations of others. The butternut squash soup was some of the best I've ever had and that garlic flat bread that came with it? I would drive there again, just for the that. Jerk chicken sandwich and bison burger were tasty also..side of mac and cheese also good. As far as I know, it is the only restaurant that you could go in Whitney when you enter Algonquin from the east (there is another one but it is closed at night). The Mad Musher is a typical Motel restaurant. They serve typical food - burger, chicken, fish fillet, onion soup, etc. The food is ok but the service is super slow, we waited more than 1 hour to get our food. In the end, the waiter felt sorry and gave us 10% discount. Again, this is the only restaurant you could go at the east gate. You really have no choice unless you bring your own food. People should enter Algonquin from the west, which is Huntsville. Bear's Den at Huntsville (a hidden restaurant NOT on Yelp) is very good. read more

My boyfriend and I were staying in the inn underneath the restaurant and decided to go on in for a bite. The food was great! I ordered the venison burger and my boyfriend ordered the Algonquin burger. The service was decent, however our water was never refilled by the waitress. (which is important to me) the prices are also quite high. We ended up spending $36 on 2 burgers including a 15% tip. Essentially, everything about it *feels like a family restaurant that only really does much business during tourist season -- which is fine, but also has an impact on the atmosphere, service, and food quality. So if you're camping at Algonquin Park (or nearby), and need a place to get out of the elements and mosquitoes for a hot meal, then by all means drop in. We drove to Algonquin last Sunday, were hungry and wanted to grab a bite before we head to one of the trails in Algonquin. Service The service was super slow. There were hardly 10 patrons in the restaurant and 2 servers. But we waited for 20-25 mins to be seated. We kept waiting because we thought they are the only game in town. Once we were done with the food, we waited for 20 mins to get the bill. Then again for 15 mins before we gave up, left the cash and walked out. Food We were a party of four. So we ordered four dishes and a side of fries. Fish and Chips, Coconut curry stir fry, Vegetarian Burger, Quesadilla. Fish and Chips were good. Other than that everything bordered on the edge of edibility/inedibility. Prices The food was quite pricey compared to the portion size and how it tastes. My condolences to residents of Whitney that this one of the only two places to eat out in town. I find it amusing how people can live a normal life in those remote places, like this little town of Whitney, near the east entrance of the Algonquin Park. I decided to escape for a few days and had the chance to try the food of this place. I think the proper rating for this place would be 3.5, since I had a good time and the food was good. However, the dishes took more than a reasonable time to be delivered, and they simply didn't come to hand us the bill, we were fed up of waiting and decided to get up and pay at the cashier. This, for me, was not a mortal sin, but my wife was a little upset. Having said that, let me describe the food a little bit. It was nothing stellar, but given that this is a restaurant in the middle of nowhere, it surpassed my expectations. We had the quesadilla, the tuna sandwich and the Yukon Burger - the latter was an exception, in a good way: it was awesome. The burger was juicy and tender, and I loved the combination of cheese, bacon and mushrooms. The server, in spite of clearly not being able to handle that amount of patrons (the place was half-full), was nice and treated us well. If I ever stay in Whitney again, I will return there. On our way to Algonquin Park we stopped off for lunch at The Mad Musher. The river view from the outside room was really nice and the service was great. Our server had a really pleasant attitude and was good at her job. That's where the stars end. Since it was almost below zero on this cloudy mid-September day, I though that the French Onion Soup would be the perfect thing to warm me up. This was easily the worst French Onion Soup that I've ever had. It was so bad that I couldn't tell our nice server what I actually thought. Where to start with the failure? Firstly, French Onion Soup is supposed to be scalding hot when it's put in the bowl and then the bowl is supposed to sit under the broiler to make the cheese not just melt, but brown to a crispy bubbly crust. One should never attempt to touch the bowl handle unless they want a severe burn and the soup should be so hot that you can't actually eat it for the first five minutes. Well, this French Onion Soup tasted like some old broth that was barely piss warm.It was offensive how the two wafer thin slices of Swiss were plopped on top of the bowl, and served barely melted. The bowl itself was cold. My boyfriend's Fish and Chips were super greasy and had a strange taste as though something had contaminated the oil, but nothing was as sad as that soup. Decent spot to stop at if you're passing through the area for whatever reason or heading off to Algonquin Park, which was exactly why I happened upon this place for lunch. There are actually a good number of options on the menu -- burgers, stews/soups, wraps, salads, etc. Food was nothing spectacular but was good enough to hit the spot, especially if you're on the road or adventuring out in that area. Given that there are only maybe two other eateries in town, The Mad Musher is a good choice. It's the closest restaurant to Algonquin East Gate, so it's a great place to stop if you're on your way out of the park. We were overall pleased with the quality of the food, which ranged from average to surprisingly tasty. Our server was extremely cheerful and very agile for a guy in a leg cast (seriously), but he was the only server in a fairly busy restaurant, so it took him a while to make his rounds. We sat on the side of the restaurant facing the Madawaska River, so we had a nice view and some pleasant background river sounds while we ate. Food: - Fried pickles appetizer: Surprisingly good! Not the best I've ever had, but they made me happy. - Mushroom ravioli entree: Good sized plate of delicious mushroom ravioli in a sweet, creamy sauce, with a side of parmesan cheese and some pretty good garlic flatbread. - Veggie burger: Server confused our order and gave us a burger without toppings, but because of the slow service up til then we ate it as-is. Since I live in the area. I could not resist adding my opinion of the Musher. The Musher Burger is a real homemade burger. You just don't get that everyday! If you are really hungry then by all means go for the Yukon! Good luck with that one. Too Big for me! The atmosphere is small town relaxed. Sit down, have a draft and a burger. They also offer wireless so you can check your email and keep up with things while you enjoy Algonquin. DISGRACEFUL behaviour from owner. I am absolutely appalled by my experience today at this "restaurant". After a long days travel from Toronto to this location, we saw that the restaurant had a nice view overlooking the river and decided to dine here. We then asked the hostess if we could sit by the window and was told that if we wait for 20-30 minutes we can. So we went by the bar and ordered wine while we waited. Shortly after, a gentleman approached us and told us that he is the owner of this restaurant and that the table that we had requested is for two people and cannot sit three. We asked if it was possible to get an extra chair there but was told very rudely "you can either sit where are now (by the bar) or get out". Shocked and in disbelief, my wife asked him what he meant and he said "I mean get out of the restaurant".
