This pleasantly welcoming family business lies in the very heart of Ardrossan's hot cafe strip - there's a coffee shop a few doors away - and it does a particularly fine pasty along with a mouth-watering selection of other baked goods. We seated ourselves comfortably at a big timber table in the spacious dining area and attacked a pasty each. I went for a sausage roll as well, accompanied by the ever-reliable 600ml Farmers Union Iced Coffee. The pasty looked good; an encouraging start. The shape and colour were near perfect, with the golden pastry flaky around the edges and the whole fat and shiny over the filled area. My usual pre-consumption dissection of the pasty revealed meat, potato and marrow and possibly a pea within, including a healthy dusting of pepper. Perhaps there could have been a little more filling, but quantity is never a substitute for quality. Closing the pasty up again and offering it to the palate confirmed the quality of this item of regional fare. Hot, with a single squirt of cooling, premium tomato sauce directly injected, the high standard of the filling was complemented by the casing's layers of flaky pastry. Yum. The sausage roll was good too. Its pastry was flaky and fully cooked without any accumulation of fat from the filling on the bottom of the roll. Inside was a tasty mix of meat with some finely cubed carrot. An ideal follow-up to the delicious pasty, and more than competitive with anything available in the distant metropolis. I sat there, draining the last of my Farmer's Union Iced Coffee, looked across at my pretty companion as she delicately chomped her lunch, and thought smugly. 'I doesn't get much better than this!' Ardrossan was absolutely pumping on the Monday of our visit. A car went past, then, just as we were leaving, another one went past, and we saw a man with a dog walk into the motor repair business opposite. Who says this is a sleepy rural village! Later, driving through the relative quiet of the Yorke Peninsula hinterland, we agreed that the Ardrossan Bakery was well worth a return visit, and enjoyed another couple of pasties there on the way home.

I have never been to this cafe until today and it is absolutely fantastic in more ways than one!…read moreThey were so busy I reckon the whole family was out in force serving behind the counter. The first thing I noticed was an older ethnic man standing behind the front counter, talking out loud as if to a family member but it was a customer. This was the first snapshot into the almost cult following the cafe has encountered and with service like that, being treated as if part of the family (I which I had a share in the biz) who wouldn't go back! You want panini they got it and other varieties of bread, you want cheese to go with it, no problem which one would you like! It's like a mini central market or the markets of Province right here, seriously it's got everything and anything sweet or savoury. Easy parking and located along the tramline with the stop almost directly out the front, no pushing and jostling to get there as it's away from the Jetty Rd mayhem, a great location to catch up with friends. It's definitely a destination. Some people move house to be in the school zone they want to send their kids to or want to be closer to the doctors they visit or their families...I want to live closer to this place, my diet would be out the window but who cares, this is the life!

The cafe channels a hipster vibe with mismatched furniture and an eclectic use of items as display cases, but the owners have really maximised the space here whilst allowing the patrons to have enough breathing room. Staff are friendly in store and always up for a chat and happy to give you their recommendations on food or tea blend options. The Menu has a good range of breakfast and light lunch options and vegetarians will find themselves relatively well looked after. I'm a big fan of their pancakes (which are really pikelets) as they are very generous on the portion sizes as well as topping options. The coffee here is a wee bit bitter for my own liking but their lattes are crazy creamy. The Litttle Leaf also mixes their own tea blends you can buy in store, whilst I'm not a tea drinker myself, friends have assured me it is top notch. The Leaf 'n' Bean also puts on regular events with live music, exhibitions and dessert nights on their cards. Worth the trip up the hill, check out their Facebook page to see what is happening instore.

Homemade cakes, muffins and slices (a large range of those being gluten free) taste like nanna has baked them herself. We tried the "Lemon Situation," GF Orange and Almond Cake and GF Apple and Rhubarb Crumble muffin thing and were all impressed and received our sweet quota for the week. The Iced Coffees were very creamy and rich with vanilla ice cream - made with real coffee but perhaps a tad too sweet for me. The atmosphere of this cafe is comfortable with a range of seating options from couches to large share tables and cushioned seats in the corner. They also have a lovely courtyard for sitting in during the day. The staff are incredibly friendly, helpful and attentive and seem to really love where they work. I didn't manage to try their breakfast or simple lunch options of soup, sandwiches and quiche etc on the menu but will definitely be back.
