Okay, this was a surprise find!…read more I had only briefly researched around St Vincent St for coffee to be had at the Port, for a little day photo trip I was taking while catching up with a new friend. There are still many shop spaces vacant around, but this was a well serviced cafe by the local people. They have two main areas for consumers to use - one past the counter, and one as you step inside. They also have some nice seating outside, but its quite shaded early. The floors captured me for the simple wooden-crate-style look they have. Sadly, it would've been a long haul to find all the wood and fit it together, but the replica laminate was a nice warmth to the rooms. Tall ceilings allow for some interesting art to be displayed, and nice rust wired and rustic pieces feature around the cafe, bringing a clean yet rustic feel to the place. The counter of reclaimed random wood was definitely a highlight of the features. Staff were totally lovely and engaging - which is a personal fave for me - and the coffees we had were marvellous. I was really glad to have found a unique place that wasn't too hipster, too populated or too squished in. For a Friday, there was plenty of people to make it an enjoyable atmosphere - but I suspect that they will have many more patrons on weekends! If you are heading out to the Port, I very much recommend visiting this tiny cafe. Theres a Salvo's next door with great priced items - so fellows, you can bring your missus along and while you enjoy the serenity of your hot bevvy, she can spend up small next door.

Flakey, crunchy and perfectly pepperily seasoned - my veggie pepper pasty was scrumptious on a cold Port Adelaide morning. It means they've used butter in their pastry and you're onto a hidden gem. This newly renovated and owned bakery is also very well laid out so you can sit and eat at their inside bench top or outside to avoid leaving crumbs everywhere. A modern and fresh interior with cool industrial lighting has been enough to take this place from corner shop to destination bakery. We couldn't help but order a Veneziano coffee, which was strong and really beautifully flavoured (I wish I knew what blend they were using as it was so different). And with ingredients like KI Honey, the hipster in me couldn't avoid ordering a honey and pistachio baked cheesecake. It was dense, creamy and a great sweetness mixed with the slightly sour cheesecake. Lovely service and still unknown to the general public, I'd get down here one seedy Saturday morning too and fill up on baked goods!

They have hazelnut, almond and pistachio which all sell for $4.50. Or you can grab yourself a plain one for $3. They also have a great range of little cakes and tarts in lucid your modem flavours and a few old schools ones! You can grab a pasty, sausage roll, meat pie and few other additions I can't recall sorry! But they all look yummy! Grab a coffee and your set for drive down to the beach!

Tucked in an outside corner of the Port Mall, this eatery had on deck about five staff on a Friday lunchtime - a sure measure of value. Indeed, the place was full of shoppers, children, blokes in hi viz gear and blow-ins like us. Well, the red plastic chairs were particularly comfortable. A good start. My gold standard for assessment (as well as service and taste) is how well a place does a double cut ham and cheese roll and a 600ml iced coffee. I'd had four coffees by this time on the day we visited Cafe Coco, so I apologise for not rating their coffee. I could feel the caffeine swirling in my bloodstream as it was! Anyway, Coco delivered with ease. I was cheerfully served a fresh, soft roll, two layers of cheese and several, albeit thin slices of tasty ham. The iced coffee was pleasantly chilled, and after our lunch, I felt that I had dined well. I add that I am a man of simple tastes! My partner washed down a toasted steak sandwich with a pot of tea. She commented that the tea made two generous cups, and that the steak sandwich, with egg, was well up to the mark. Our meals cost us just over ten dollars apiece. No wonder the place is busy.

May I suggest the milkshakes? Not if you're on a diet I suppose, but they do make a nice one here. That's about the only thing I can think of that stands out. I'm probably making this sound really bad, and I don't mean to. It's a good cafe, the food is good, the service is good. It's all... good! It's just not great. They are also located just across from the Maritime Museum which makes them a perfect spot for an afternoon out. I came here on such a nice sunny day (which no doubt added to my enjoyment) and we could have sat very happily either inside or outside. I ordered Eggs Benedict and my friend got the French Toast. Both were simply presented (no excessive "plating up" here) and tasted beautiful. I had a smoothie too which was nice but could have been a bit stronger. All in all a really nice brunch spot - especially with the weather getting nice again.

The space is open, colourful and very simple but there is plenty of space to sit on couches, tables and benches. The service is very casual but friendly. I chose a Punk Rock Soup of the Day with pumpkin, cannelloni beans and rosemary with cape seed toast and cashew butter if you please! The soup was piping hot, sweet and not mushy like baby food. It had some great strong flavours and I like the different combo of ingredients. A medium sized, health conscious serving it kept me full until way past dinner time. Coffee is Campos blend (only 1 of 3 cafes to serve it in Adelaide). And if you show interest they will tell you that this is the chosen blend because of is incredibly hands on, environmentally conscious owners. Every little detail here has been so carefully thought out to ensure this place fulfils its environmentally and socially conscious values but to others it can still just be a bargain of a menu and a shining star of a venue in an area that is is trying to build its street cred. I'd actually have to question if anything had changed after it was converted from its last life as a different store, did they literally just drag an open kitchen in? I'm all for hipster joints with reclaimed tables and exposed walls but I have to call stuff out when it's purely left untouched. I feel like this place was left untouched which made it feel dusty. We sat at a reclaimed garden table, it still had hints of its previous outside life being quite dusty and grimy on its edges. We drank water from jam glasses that should have screw top lids, regardless of how hipster that is, it's not really comfortable to place your mouth on, and how do they clean the inside of these things properly when you can't get a hand inside, and they're used so often? I ordered a banana smoothie with dates added it was very sweet. It was nice and had a real raw food cafe taste. Can't complain there. The coffee, I ordered a cappuccino that sadly has to get 1 star it was muddy and bland. I had to rescue it with a sugar and even then it was not quite coffee. I do expect quite a lot from a well priced cafe and coffee is a central offering of any cafe. Maybe it was the barista on the day because others sing the stores praise but If your coffee game isn't up to par it's hard to appreciate why that's so, just being fair trade certified organic isn't enough, I'm afraid. As a meal I had a carrot and walnut burger. It was really nice. I'm not a sole vegetarian but I completely appreciated the flavours and ingredients in this burger, it was lovely. Only one of the relishes I couldn't decipher wasn't to my liking but that's only personal preference this burger saved the whole review and brought up my over all experience. If you're looking for a vegetarian burger, this place has it! $11 for the burger though, is that worth $11 alone? I'm not quite sure about that but I was certainly full after. Overall not too bad, I see it as an overly try-hard hipster cafe that isn't quite on point yet. Instead of trendy reclaimed, it's just dusty and reclaimed, if the average price was brought down everything might align to being more congruent with the setting and offering of this cafe. Overall I would come again with my friends who have variety here as vegetarians but not on my own where I think I could find cheaper alternatives.
