As a non-local this place was recommended to us. Service was not friendly. Breakfast was non plus. Only eggs from a carton are available if you want an egg. Not a great experience here. The woman who took our order wasn't very friendly. You could overlook that if everything else was good, but it wasn't. My wife got a caramel latte when that wasn't what she ordered. She brought it back to the counter, and it was replaced with the correct thing. Unfortunately, after we left and the receipt was emailed to my wife, we found out that we were charged for the caramel 'shot' that we didn't order, and they also charged us two bucks for an orange juice that we never ordered or received. What a ripoff, and the food itself was just meh, nothing to write home about. Unfortunately there aren't any other breakfast options within walking distance of the Tides Inn, so the choice is high priced breakfast at Tides, this place, or get in the car and drive somewhere else. read more

My wife and I, both African Americans, recently purchased a house in the area and decided to try out The Local this morning for brunch. The line was fairly long but manageable. We ordered, paid, and waited patiently. The first hint that something was wrong occurred when the waitress offered every table but ours chips and salsa while they waited. After it was clear that our table, located directly in front of the counter, did not have chips, some were brought to us. We waited about 30 minutes more for our food which never arrived. Patrons who ordered after us received their orders. When we inquired about our order, we were told "the ticket must have been lost." Ironic that the only African American patrons in the restaurant did not receive their order, we think NOT. We requested a refund and left, never to return again. read more

Very slow to complete a 2 sandwich take out order - arrived home and it was incorrect! Nothing special about the ingredients of the sandwiches they weren't at all deli like...they were dinky. We have been coming to the Local for several years with some great and some average experience.. However, today was by far the worst experience we have ever had at the local. It was clearly under staffed and bringing out a cold bagel without cream cheese was trivial to the staff. It took an extremely long time for a cafe mocha and iced latte to be created behind the counter, we then were given the wrong drinks. Small coffee/sandwich shop that serves breakfast until 11 (don't try to order a breakfast sandwich after 11...), and lunch until 3 (but no ordering after 2!) We stopped in for brunch, and it ended up an early-ish lunch. (No breakfast after 11! They have rules at this place!) The food: super fresh and good. Large sandwiches with a small side of very rich (and very good) potato salad. The potato salad wasn't heavy on mayonnaise, it had more of a fresh cream taste. Because it was so rich, the small portion was perfect. The toppings on the sandwiches were quite fresh: crispy spinach, and the tomatoes surprisingly red and juicy for this time of year. The service: lackluster, at best. Servers were frank and seemingly unhappy (no smiles). It took twenty minutes to get our two sandwiches (as I said, the place wasn't crowded at all). The employee who brought sandwiches to table just put the plates on table and walked away without comment, kind of awkward. The garlic shrimp wrap with pesto and spinach was tasty, as was the potato salad side. The ingredients were fresh and well-prepared. The interior is appealing and cozy. The ice cream and baked goods look amazing. My server, Jessica-the-Red was bubbly, informative and delightful. She gave me the down low on a lot of stuff! For example she noted: 1) most restaurants in White Stone and Irvington are closed on Mondays, so everyone on the staff can recover from the weekend rush; 2) that Willoughby's (where granny used to take me for lunch) burnt down and the owners had bought the Lancaster Landing and would be opening soon; 3) that the clerk next door was the nicest person in the world and would help me find fried oysters even though it was Monday (and it was true! the nice clerk called her boyfriend and he recommended Kokomo's in Deltaville); In fact, Jessica-the-Red was so delightful that I let go of my oyster obsession and got the garlic shrimp/pesto/spinach wrap. Just had lunch. Asked server what the best sandwich was and she recommended the Reuben pannini. 9 bucks got me a couple of slices of turkey and a slice of cheese on the equivalent of a medium sized dinner roll. A small dollop of potato salad rounded out this expensive disappointment. As they are the only game in town I guess they can get away with it. Good points: clean and toney atmosphere. Fun place! We walked to The Local from the inlaws house and had breakfast after playing on the playground a few blocks away. Inside is tight quarters but it works. It's especially nice if it's a nice day outside and you can sit on the patio. Expect higher prices than you would normally pay (I like to think of them as "airport" prices). There's not much else around so they can choose their own pricing. That being said, our blueberry muffin was delicious. We had it warmed up and had butter on the side. We also had a yogurt parfait that had fresh raspberries and blackberries in it. It came with granola. Delicious. A perfect little place to stop for breakfast if you can walk or bike to it. read more

Update to my last review a few months ago. Three times since then, my husband or I have attempted to go back to the local for a late lunch. Side note: they are open until 3pm which is relevant to my updated review. Two visits were a bit after 2pm and one was at 2:30pm. Twice we had the door closed in our face, with a terse, "we're closed." No apologies, no explanation. I was ready to never go back but my dh convinced me to try again today. It's small town living he said. Maybe it was just a sad coincidence. Today, one of the slightly after 2pm visits, we were greeted by a new sign on the door that they are open until 3pm but the kitchen closes at 2pm. Effectively, they are closed at 2pm. We walked in and the young lady at the register says, "Kitchen is closed." The Local - Thanks for finally letting is know that your hours changed by adding a for sign. Too bad you don't have common sense/customer service savvy to be pleasant about it! You should update your hours on your website although it will no longer matter to me since I won't be back. read more

What a pleasant experience. Went in at a very busy time with 11 people for breakfast. Noticed a sign that asked for patience because of being understaffed. Expected a long wait. Wonderful surprise that not only were we waited on in a very short time , our food was delivered to our table in a remarkably short time, was accurate and absolutely delicious. Decent food, terrible service. Our drinks, when delivered, were each literally about 1/2 - 2/3 full, and we paid about $3-4for each of them. Upon notifying the staff, their only response was that we could "add some milk if we wanted them fuller." I typically don't pay $4 for a little coffee so I can water it down with milk. Mediocre cafe that fills a void in this town, but not well. It's relatively spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Free Wifi is a plus, though it does not extend well to the outdoor space. Have not had lunch here, but the breakfast sandwiches are average (unless you ask for a specific cheese, it comes with American). Coffee is the main downfall of this place, which serves a very poor cup of joe. Staff is somewhat ambivalent toward outsiders, but seem to have a soft spot for locals, of which there are many and I appreciate. Overall, if you're in town and need a cup of coffee, I'd probably drive out of town for a better cup. However, if you need some space for a day of working remotely, it's not a bad option. read more
