The Salty Pigeon

I rode by the Salty Pigeon several days ago and decided it looked worth trying out. I had no…read morereference for it at all, just a chance encounter. I was thrilled with the discovery. The setting is tasteful and elegant, nothing fancy but nice. The bulk of the seating is upstairs. The menu is well sized; not overwhelming. A nice "About" story is printed inside the menu, introducing you to the players and bringing a nice personal touch to the experience. I ordered the duck confit with black pudding and bacon lardons and jus starter and the lamb rump with couscous for the main. For the wine I ordered a glass of local red wine (from Kenton winery down the road), which surprised me as well. Very drinkable and matched my meal nicely. A taste of a potato and garlic with truffle oil soup (biche?) was served while I waited and my taste buds were raring to go. The duck confit with black pudding was like an umami explosion in my head - utterly delicious. I was sad to see it end. The lamb rump, which was served with a sage infused jus, was even better. This was by far the best meal I'd had in Exeter (and one of the best in the UK). After discussing the jus with Ryan, the owner, he brought out a small bowl for me to dunk my bread. Unpretentiousness scores high in my book. That bordered on awesomeness. To finish I ordered the cheese platter and another glass of wine. Ryan introduced each cheese to me (all locally produced) and as I was the last customer in the restaurant we chatted about a few things. A good host, new to the trade with an excellent product. I enjoyed it so much I felt compelled to write a review (which I don't do often). Seriously, if you live in Exeter or are simply visiting, make this one of your destinations.

The Bell & Crown is a historic pub in the little village of Zeals. It has an expansive interior,…read morealthough the walls are painted a very dark colour which makes the main bar area feel a little claustrophobic. (Yes, as another review states, candles in the middle of the day are a feature). Fortunately there is a another eating area which is brighter, and a large covered eating area outside, if atmospheric gloom isn't your thing. The menu is a notch or three above average pub food; my friend had calves' liver with spring greens and mash, and I had a vegetarian sourdough pizza with a side salad of rocker with dressed shallots and grated pecorino cheese. Both were really excellent - my pizza had a deep umami flavour and is one of the best I've eaten. That said, you pay accordingly: the two mains, side salad, with a beer and water, and 12.5% service, came to just shy of £58. Service was very attentive, if rather serious. By the time we left the place was packed with families and couples. So, a good choice for a special meal, but it might be bit too restaurant-priced for some.

My wife and I were in North Dorset to visit friends. After taking a lovely walk in the forest at…read moreKing Alfred's Tower we drove back to the Inn where we were staying. On the way back we drove through Zeals. There it was, on the left along the A303. It looked charming like so many English pubs do. We went in and took a long look at the menu. Five minutes later, we were back on the road...with reservations for two at 6:45 pm. There is plenty of outdoor seating but we chose to be indoors. We were met by a very welcoming staff. Everyone was so friendly. Our server, Josh, had seated us by the window in minutes. He was very helpful and attentive throughout our dinner. The wine list was varied. There were several beers on tap. My wife chose the liver, cabbage and mashed potatoes. She loved it. I selected the Roast Duck with kale, mashies, sautéed onions and cavalo nero. I thought it was terrific. The decor was an interesting mix of contemporary art, antique prints and old photographs. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in this cozy country Inn.
