I wish I didn't have to write this review but every time I try and support this local grocery store…read moreit ends up poorly. I've gotten to driving a half hour each way to Knoxville because it just seems to get worse over time. Staff aren't attentive, produce selection is horrible (today I wasn't able to get half of the produce I needed because what was on the shelves were disgusting looking - bruises, moldy, old, soft, damaged, etc.) Prices are much higher than Walmart, Kroger in Knoxville, IGA and definitely much higher than Aldi. Deli is really slow most of the time too. Today, like nearly always, the checkout was disappointing. Today was exceptionally bad though; bagger was incredibly inattentive. The cashier wasn't terribly friendly, but the bagger was not paying attention to anything, had really red eyes, and he couldn't focus. He was mindlessly putting things in bags that should never be put together... Raw meat with fresh fruits, bread with heavy items, 6 heavy jars in one bag, frozen with pharmacy, overstuffed bags, ripping bags and more. Not only was the bagger's attention non existent, when we tried to ask him to bag things more thoughtfully he got upset and we ended up bagging much of our own groceries. About 6 staff members just stood by laughing and talking, not helping guests either. Why so many people doing nothing? I get it that it's hard to find quality people, but lack of training and lack of care for customers shouldn't be tolerated. These are basic components of the most simple guest service in retail. I wish it would get better. Produce that isn't bad, slow deli and routinely bad check-out experiences make it almost impossible for me to support this local business. I'll have to keep driving into Knoxville. Only thing good about this location is the pharmacy. They've been helpful and they're kind and friendly most of the time. That's why it's 2 stars instead of 1. Pharmacy is good.

Hard working folks trying to live the American dream here in Eastern TN!…read more We live nearby and have watched them try and get the store ready for a few months now. They are definitely more of a small neighborhood deli/grill than a store (unless you're looking for beer, tobacco or soda) but they were spoken of so highly on FB for their burgers so we tried them today. Coming in it looks like an old store under construction (don't let this scare you away). There were 6 others in there getting burgers when I came in and another 12+ came in after me (at 1:30pm). These are hard working, blue collar, good folks - neighbors, farmers and people from the community. They knew what they liked and this place is it. We ordered 2 bacon cheeseburgers and 2 fries. It was only 21 bucks for it all. The burgers were juicy, BIG, and high quality. The fries were hot and tasty. The bacon on the cheeseburgers were super thick and hearty. They are doing things right and with high quality and it shows by how many people love it. We live close and will be back often for burgers!

Haven't had pastrami in a while so I had to order the Pastrami Reuben and the presentation was great with how it was stacked! Between the sauce and the sauerkraut the flavors were all good and I enjoyed the taste of the pastrami when I found it, but the bread to meat ratio was so high I mostly tasted the burned crust of the bread and very few bites of pastrami. It was one slice of pastrami, not a thin slice but not what you hope for when you bite into true Jewish deli pastrami, which are normally bursting at the seems with meat. Marble rye is hard not to burn and they did a good job for the most part, but I tasted more crust than I did pastrami, and for $18 I wonder if this sandwich was more a charge for the hype. The blintzes were also smaller than one would expect of a blintz but I absolutely loved the compote on top.

It was beyond lunch time and I hadn't eaten at all, so I looked around as we drove and saw the sign for this place. I love a good deli sandwich so I asked my husband to pull in and let me run in. It was a Wednesday afternoon and after lunch, so there were only a few people inside. Upon entering, I went in a door that was at a dessert counter. There were few cupcakes and treats in the case, so I quickly went on past to find the counter to order a sandwich. The ladies at the counter were super friendly and took my order quickly. I chose a hot ham and cheese sandwich with bbq potato chips and a fountain drink. The order took about 7 or 8 minutes to be prepared and brought to me in a box to the table where I sat and waited. There was seating outside by the river/creek(?) I believe and then there was seating inside. It looks like it was once another restaurant or some other establishment taht they have transformed into this deli. Don't let the looks of the inside deter you, though! The food was phenomenal! We stopped in on the recommendation of a local shop owner while we were visiting Bryson City, and I'm so glad we did. Being from the Tampa area, we're pretty picky about Cuban sandwiches. They're a staple back home, so our expectations were high. The owner happened to be there and confidently recommended the Cuban, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. There was a short wait while it was made fresh, but it was well worth it. The sandwich was perfectly balanced, flavorful, and honestly tasted like a little piece of home. We packed it up and enjoyed it before heading out for an afternoon of tubing, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. The shop itself is charming, clean, and has a welcoming atmosphere where you can sit down and enjoy your meal. We didn't try the sweets this time, but they looked delicious and give us another reason to come back. Meeting the owner made the experience even better. He was friendly, welcoming, and clearly takes pride in what he serves. Whether you're a fellow Floridian missing a great Cuban or you've never had one before, do yourself a favor and stop by High Test Deli & Sweet Shop. It's absolutely worth it. This is an easy 5-star recommendation, and we'll be back the next time we're in Bryson City.
