In 3rd grade our son was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia. We lived in an area that did not have services to remediate his learning challenges and as parents we felt hopelessly lost. Through research, interviews with staff and families that attended TLS, and a very brief visit, we immediately knew this was going to be just what our son needed. We came here with the intention of staying only 2 years, however the school provided such a rich learning and supportive community for both our son and us, that we decided to stay at the school through 8th grade and then attend a local high school. The staff and students became family. The staff at Liberty was amazing. What they do, they do not do in a bubble. Families are a part of the process and are kept informed of the educational goals, processes, and progress. The doors are always open to speak with the Head of School, teachers, and tutors. Families are encouraged to get involved and the school provides quite a bit of training and education to families so they can best understand their child's learning challenges and strengths. Success story: Success can be measured in so many ways, for our son it was developing self confidence and an absolute LOVE of learning. After attending Liberty for 5 years, he was incredibly successful in High School, understanding how to use his strengths and advocate for himself. He developed an incredible love of reading and writing. In his first year of college, he is transferring those skills learned at Liberty, and honed in High School with grace. We feel blessed to have found this little school in the beautiful mountain town of Durango, Co. The area is rich with southwestern culture and TLS brings that richness to the forefront of its learning. Students explore the rich traditions, history, and heritage of the area and use the surrounding mountains as a place for students to connect with nature, its people, and its history. read more

The Liberty School helped me tremendously as a child. I had always struggled with reading and writing and had to attend extra intervention classes throughout my elementary school years. It always made me feel different from the other kids, like I didn't quite belong. One day, my mom told me we were moving to Durango, Colorado, so I could attend the Liberty School, a school that specialized in teaching kids with dyslexia. I was so nervous and scared. I thought I was going to be "that kid" who couldn't read and had to take additional classes in a completely different part of the building. It was anything but that. The Liberty School was -- and still is -- one of the most inviting and supportive environments a child could ever experience. From day one, I could tell it was going to be different. Instead of being the kid with a learning disability who couldn't read or write, I was just a kid. Everyone there understood me. No one made fun of me, and no one made me feel out of place. I made many new friends (most of whom I am still close with today). Liberty taught me not only how my brain works and why I learn differently, but also that it's okay to take a little longer to figure things out. That lesson alone changed my confidence completely. One of the biggest things Liberty did for me was introduce me to the world of film. There, I learned how to write, shoot, and edit my very first short film with my friends. Because Liberty sparked my newfound passion for film and video production, I now own a production company and have had the opportunity to work on Hollywood films -- doing something I love every single day. Overall, my experience at the Liberty School was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Not only did I discover a passion that shaped my career, but I also learned an even more important lesson: just because your brain works a little differently doesn't mean you can't accomplish anything you set your mind to. read more

I cannot say enough about Liberty and the care and passion of each and every staff member has for these kids. My son has dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Liberty has fiqured out away to use those weakness and turn the into strength for him. He still has a long road ahead of him, but I have no doubt with Liberty's team beside him he will conquer his road. Liberty School has an incredible mission/vision, and a rich history of serving many dyslexic and twice exceptional students. Unfortunately, that has started to change under their new head of school. Simply put, Liberty school has no clear admission process, their head of school is dishonest about wait lists, and he and his and staff discriminates against students. The head of school told us we would be waitlisted until the 25-26 school year. When contacting him to discuss enrollment for that year, he denied having a waitlist, and denied offering admissions, despite having it in writing. He made up disabilities, based on my child's race and ethnicity, that were not in his evaluation or ever stated in any report, period. The tutor we spoke to on the shadow day even told us "even if he doesn't attend Liberty School, that boy should run track, I've had a lot of black students, and they were all great athletes." Upon contacting the head of school with this situation, he never even responded. If you are interested in Liberty, be aware that this head of school has no admission process, is dishonest, and might discriminate against your child they way he did to us. If you are looking for an exclusive environment for wealthy white students who may or may not have an intellectual disability, then this is your best bet. Its a real shame that the school designed to meet my child's needs also became his first experience with racial discrimination, but at least we found this out now, and not after he would have had to be around this type of staff all day. read more
