Through research, interviews with staff and families that attended TLS, and a very brief visit, we immediately knew this was going to be just what our son needed. We came here with the intention of staying only 2 years, however the school provided such a rich learning and supportive community for both our son and us, that we decided to stay at the school through 8th grade and then attend a local high school. The staff and students became family. The staff at Liberty was amazing. What they do, they do not do in a bubble. Families are a part of the process and are kept informed of the educational goals, processes, and progress. The doors are always open to speak with the Head of School, teachers, and tutors. Families are encouraged to get involved and the school provides quite a bit of training and education to families so they can best understand their child's learning challenges and strengths. Success story: Success can be measured in so many ways, for our son it was developing self confidence and an absolute LOVE of learning. After attending Liberty for 5 years, he was incredibly successful in High School, understanding how to use his strengths and advocate for himself. He developed an incredible love of reading and writing. In his first year of college, he is transferring those skills learned at Liberty, and honed in High School with grace. We feel blessed to have found this little school in the beautiful mountain town of Durango, Co. The area is rich with southwestern culture and TLS brings that richness to the forefront of its learning. Students explore the rich traditions, history, and heritage of the area and use the surrounding mountains as a place for students to connect with nature, its people, and its history.

The Liberty School helped me tremendously as a child. I had always struggled with reading and…read morewriting and had to attend extra intervention classes throughout my elementary school years. It always made me feel different from the other kids, like I didn't quite belong. One day, my mom told me we were moving to Durango, Colorado, so I could attend the Liberty School, a school that specialized in teaching kids with dyslexia. I was so nervous and scared. I thought I was going to be "that kid" who couldn't read and had to take additional classes in a completely different part of the building. It was anything but that. The Liberty School was -- and still is -- one of the most inviting and supportive environments a child could ever experience. From day one, I could tell it was going to be different. Instead of being the kid with a learning disability who couldn't read or write, I was just a kid. Everyone there understood me. No one made fun of me, and no one made me feel out of place. I made many new friends (most of whom I am still close with today). Liberty taught me not only how my brain works and why I learn differently, but also that it's okay to take a little longer to figure things out. That lesson alone changed my confidence completely. One of the biggest things Liberty did for me was introduce me to the world of film. There, I learned how to write, shoot, and edit my very first short film with my friends. Because Liberty sparked my newfound passion for film and video production, I now own a production company and have had the opportunity to work on Hollywood films -- doing something I love every single day. Overall, my experience at the Liberty School was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Not only did I discover a passion that shaped my career, but I also learned an even more important lesson: just because your brain works a little differently doesn't mean you can't accomplish anything you set your mind to.

It really does feel like having a big family that cares about you here on the mountain! The instructors ( volunteer and staff alike ) have the biggest hearts! Highly recommend taking lessons here if you are an adaptive athlete! I also recommend donating to this wonderful non profit organization if you can ! They do so much for our veterans and disabled community members both on a local and national level ! Can't wait to come back!

I knew people staying in dingy hotel rooms offered by the college. If you do happen to get housing on campus it will be far from consistent. I've had to move 3 times around campus even though I've applied early for the next term for the same hall. I've vocalized this concern to be left with a "well that's just not how it works" Also strange penalties on your student account will cause extra payments. I've always been on time with payments and paid a lot of weird late fees anyway.

Class of 2009! =D…read more This used to be the only high school in Durango, but it's still considered the main school that most kids go to. DHS was a pretty good high school, especially since I was able to attend after they added the english and art wings. This gave both the students and the teachers a lot more space and made it much better for everyone. I had a lot of great teachers who helped me succeed academically and had lots of fun at the football games, pep assemblies and hanging out with friends.

The elementary students have a wilderness day every Thursday afternoon where they are able to get outside and learn in nature, which is awesome, especially since we live in such a beautiful place to explore! Because it is a small school there is time for activities such as ice skating, and a ski trip to Purgatory! I also love that our kids are receiving a great education while having fun at the same time. I am happy to have a safe place to send my kids where bullying isn't even heard of, and where they are taught how to love each other the way Jesus loves us. I hope more will find this gem!
