I came in wanting to get a male leotard and tried on a medium. It fit but was a hassle to get on which was confusing because that was my usual clothing size. The guy working prompted me to try on a large anyway. I did and fit perfect! Taking the trouble to engage with customers matters, and saves hassles of returns on both sides. I'm an adult ballet dancer who returned to ballet at the start of the pandemic. After a few years, I decided to try pointe again after not doing it for decades. I dropped by The Leotard without an appointment, but Ellis had me wait just a few minutes before fitting me. She was truly exceptional, listening to me without judgment, patiently observing me try about 10 shoes until we found the pair that supported me the best. I was amazed--I'd associated pointe shoes with unbearable pain, and wearing the shoes Ellis found for me, I didn't have any improper pain. Several months later and toward the end of my first shoes' life, I called The Leotard again--Ellis remembered me and recommended a second fitting, reading my mind about doing some fine tuning. I came in looking for canvas dance shoes and got what I needed. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful, and helped me get the right size. The shoes are comfortable and we're reasonably priced (~$45). I did check out skirts and other practice-wear, but was a little sad to see a lack of diversity in sizes. I'm not a large person, but I'm not a small one either and I didn't find anything that would really fit me. Do not shop here! After buying a pair of $100 shoes and receiving a "10% student discount" making them $90, I was looking for reviews of the brand online and saw the shoe listed on The Leotard website for $84.15! When I phoned to inquire about the price difference I was told they try to make the "discount" price come out close to what the online price plus S&H would be. I asked to speak to a manager and was given the owner who proceeded to interrupt and talk over me telling me how I "didnt understand how hard it was to run a business" and he would just give me the difference. This was said with condescension and annoyance. I live 30 miles away and had made a special trip to the city for the express purpose of buying shoes and didn't want to drive back over six dollars. I wanted to be heard as a customer, that's all. I tried to explain to him that it felt disingenuous to be offered a discount for being a dance student only to find a lower advertised price on his website. He continued to interrupt and not listen, obviously annoyed at having to hear feedback from a customer. When I told him I was going to leave a one-star review as a result of our interaction which could have been avoided if he would have just listen to me and valued me as a customer he said, "You're an angry little troll" and said he didn't "give a shit." read more

I called in first to see if they had a larger size in stock and the staff member I spoke to did not even need to double check. The exchange was fast and easy and I got what I needed without having to order and wait. Growing up in Portland, I've seen the location of The Leotard change quite a few times. What hasn't changed about The Leotard is their commitment to making every customer satisfied. When I went in last week, I needed some costume leotards for work at the Sky Club in downtown Portland. I'm giving this another try...... I went in a couple weeks ago looking for some dance shorts, the store is big and clean with lots of selection and very helpful staff. The problem was the fitting rooms, very cute but the lighting and shadows and the angle of the mirror make worse than a Target fitting room! I have never felt so lumpy dumpy and un-fit in a pair of shorts before. I know most people shopping there are probably in really good shape, and I may only be in pretty good shape, but I left disappointed and empty-handed and upset enough that I *almost* said something to the clerk. Invest in some softer lighting, and tilt the mirrors up ever so slightly. Customers will feel much better about themselves. :) Thanks. read more

Had to find Latin 1.5 heel ballroom shoes in a size 6.5. Went to The Glass Slipper (which is in a house) was closed on a Saturday at noon! Then went to Carrie B's limited selection. Then to Togs in Beaverton even worse selection for Ballroom. Then to Portland Dancewear really helpful, cute ballet items but didn't have the size I was looking for. Planned on going back to Glass Slipper on Monday but read Yelp reviews on the place & one review said 'sales people rude & they went to Leotard Dance Shoes on MLK & found what they were looking for'. At this point I was not hopeful in finding what I needed & was already near home in Tualatin. But my perseverance wouldn't let me quit. I called them & they said they had exactly what I needed!!!! Yeah I turned car around & stepped it up. They seem to have a great selection of shoes, ballet wear & jazz wear. I'm hoping this review will help someone else from having to run around. read more

This is a great store for first time dance moms. The staff is very helpful and nice. They are dancers too so they know exactly what kind of gear is recommended for newbies and more experienced dancers. I can't imagine trying to dance in shoes that don't fit, and don't want my daughter to have to do that. This is ground zero for Portland bunheads! As a former ice skater and returning adult ballet dancer, I just love all things Lycra, spandex, and sequins, and the Leotard delivers! It's my go to if I need a new dance class outfit or warm up gear. They have a great selection of high quality tights (if you want cheap, buy online.) that will cost a bit more but last through multiple wears and washings. I've been a part of the dance. Community off and on my whole life, and I still remember when I was little and The Leotard was at Lloyd Center. The nostalgia has not worn off despite the new, far superior location. Just walking in makes me remember the excitement of a new leotard, new tights or new shoes. I still dance, although not every day as when I was young, and still buy my clothes here for a reason. The environment is welcoming, safe, and encouraging- just like my current dance studio. I ordered on line two dance leotards for my granddaughter a week before Christmas. After I placed the order that evening I saw they were local here in Portland.
