I called the Leak Detectives after I received a letter from the city stating I was using an excessive amount of water. Keith, and his wife, were very helpful and suggested I first turn everything off in the house, including my sprinkler feed, and check the water meter at the sidewalk. Doing this, I was able to determine that there was no ongoing leak, including from the irrigation system or a leaky toilet. I ran through the sprinkler timer for all zones and could not visually see any leaks. With the help of a sprinkler expert I found a sprinkler head that was hidden under some bushes that was broken off. When that zone kicked on the water just gushed. I also had my time set too long, which only made things worse. My parents received a call from the Water Bureau saying they had a much higher bill than normal, suspecting a water leak. I found Leak Detectives on Yelp, and called. Joseph gave me instructions for me to do my own preliminary check of the problem, and I was able to determine that the leak was not inside the house nor in the irrigation system, leaving a water main leak the likely source. Joseph came out, double-checked my diagnosis, then located the leak: A long-buried water shutoff valve that had rusted. You could see the water pooled in the access cylinder. He charged $350 which I found very reasonable. In addition, he located another shutoff valve for the inside water in the crawl space, unknown to us and very useful for the future. Keith is an absolutely amazing guy!!! He showed up at exactly the time of the appointment. I explained what was going on, he asked very good questions and gave me a bit of his background and how he got into his business. He explained what he was going to do and how long it would take. He then geared up and proceeded to find not one but two leaks in the main water line for my house. He explained that his accuracy was "pretty good" and that if the leak wasn't where he said, he would happily refund the call out charge. Keith arrived on time and was very pleasant and courteous. His location of the leak was within the allowed 4' radius - the plumbers found the leak 3' 5" from the location marker. Unfortunately all of the 3' 5" was underneath a concrete slab - the location mark was on the edge of the slab. The total charge was $400, a $250 charge call out fee plus 2 hours at $75/hour. It is often an emergency when in need of a service like this and usually one has little option but to accept the charges. A call out fee of $250 is excessive to say the least. read more

In our case, we had a leak in the main water line between the street and our house. Keith was able to accurately locate the leak and was even able to tell me that the pipe was roughly 4 feet down. I bought a house with a sprinkler system with 4 zones already installed. When two zones of the system started to lose pressure I started looking for the valves to fix the problem.
