"I wish I found LAS sooner" is something I've heard many times from actors, and after joining LAS myself, I wholeheartedly agree. Desean works to build autonomous artists. There are many acting studios in Los Angeles that create toxic co-dependent relationships, ones in which the student feels dependent on the teacher/coach. Because of LAS, I've rediscovered confidence & playfulness in my auditions. Desean & his faculty build an environment of curiosity, freedom, and exploration all within a safe container. You'll always catch Desean asking the class for feedback after a scene. It feels like it's important to him to expand not just our critical thinking skills as an ensemble but to pay attention to every ounce of behavior. Desean's perception skills are on another level. Something I love about this place is that the coaches are committed to making the acting process feel more fun and exploration/discovery based. Desean is a very nurturing and respectful coach, and the level of individual instruction you will receive is pretty amazing. Desean gets to know you, and finds ways to challenge you personally, in a way that feels collaborative and fun, while taking you to the next level in your work. You will definitely learn and grow in this class. It includes scene study analysis but goes beyond it into a more physical embodiment/experiential approach which is just one of the many things that make this class stand out among others. Desean is such a good teacher, and beyond that, he gives such individual attention to every single person in class. It's hard for me to overstate how incredible my time at this studio has been. Desean easily ranks as one of the best teachers I have had the chance to train with--his curiosity about each of his students and their respective processes is unmatched, as is his ability to quickly diagnose what is keeping an actor from performing their best work. It's rare to see a teacher that can so easily feed students a piece of guidance that unlocks them to act spontaneously and authentically; it really is amazing to watch. Perhaps just as important is how modest Desean is; many acting teachers can't help but make class about themselves, but Desean never hogs the spotlight. He places his attention squarely on the actors and their needs and works hard to add to their toolkits. Many acting teachers like to say that they aren't "directors," that they won't "direct" scenes--I have found that this is rarely the case. But with Desean, you can believe it. He is always meeting actors exactly where they are, and he is hyper-focused on getting actors to work from their imaginations. This review may seem like hyperbole. But I mean every word. Desean Terry changed my life. I stumbled into Desean's class at 19 years old. A child actor with a lot of bad habits and a whole lot of questions. I was falling out of love with the work when I entered his class as I was disillusioned with the industry and a little lost as a man. The way I had gotten work growing up was no longer serving me or exciting me. But it was with Desean that I was introduced to story telling and the value of my unique artistry in a way I never have been anywhere else. Desean takes interests in you as an artist and a human being. He cares. It's not for show. He truly cares. God really answers prayers out here, OKAY! LAS is your new home for acting. I am telling you, I am so blessed to have been shown this amazing place of learning. I Started as a Musical Theatre major in college, and ended up switching to acting after graduating. Since I still felt lacking in that area over music, I have been through a few different acting studios to try and master it. LAS is the one place where I feel at ease. I do not feel like every single moment I perform has to be perfect. I do not feel like my choices for my scene are "wrong" while my teachers are "right." I do not feel like I have to be better than anyone else in the room. I feel brilliant every time I step into our class. I know that I really am there to throw stuff at the wall and to see what sticks. To find my process even on days where I feel wonky. I know that anything my teacher gives me is a suggestion/option/new possible direction vs being the correct or best way to do my scene even if it doesn't sit right with me. Desean Terry is such a caring soul. He allows all of us to bring our true selves to our scenes as well as adapts his style of teaching to what each student needs in that moment instead of a one size fits all. Even during lab, having Sean and Josette! They all give so much amazing advice while applying the readings immediately to what we are doing in real time. I could truly go on and on, and i've only been here for one month. Know that you do not need to stay anywhere you feel pressure (in a negative way) just because it is the " tough love norm" for how you "should" be training as an actor. Know that YOU ARE AN ACTOR and you already have everything you need inside of yourself to flourish. Know that you can come to a studio like LAS where you feel happy, playful, nurtured, cared for, intelligent, strong and free and learn JUST AS MUCH IF NOT MORE about yourself and your craft than a studio that makes you feel like crud as if you must be broken down so they can build you back up.
