When I decided that I wanted to seriously pursue a career in acting I had the same dilemma that many actors face; what kind of training do I need, and who do I entrust with the job of training me? I had taken classes in High School, and in College, and knew that I simply was not at a level where I could compete with actors in Hollywood who were actually booking these acting jobs. Then I remembered the best piece of advice that any college professor had ever given me. He had said that if a person REALLY wanted to learn how to act that they needed to go to Hollywood or New York and study Meisner with a coach that they really trusted. The thing that makes Meisner such a good technique is that it is so limitless, yet still safe. What I mean by this is that other acting styles that rely on actors real personal past experiences in order to get into a REAL emotional state are limited in that an actor then only has the ability to draw upon that which they have actually experienced. With the Meisner technique you learn how to get into a REAL emotional state using a "seed" of reality and fictional circumstances applied to that "seed" of truth. Not only does this make the Meisner technique as limitless as your imagination, it also makes it safe in that you can easily "turn it off" when they call cut, because whatever you were crying about or in a rage about is not based on something that was a traumatic truth in your life. So then began my search for a Meisner class. I visited several studios, and then audited Waynes class, and the choice was clear. Wayne is great because he teaches every class himself. There are no associates, or underlings teaching you, with an occasional appearance from the coach with the "name". This allows him to be able to keep track of every student's personal growth, giving you projects that will stretch an actor where he/she needs it most. He also keeps the classes small (no more than about 12 people) so that every actor can be afforded the opportunity to get up and work every week, which is crucial to steady improvement. He teaches a two year program. The first year is always from your own point of view. It focuses on learning to be "real" and to be truly "in the moment" , by learning to access real emotional states out of fictitious circumstances through a series of exercises, combined with scene work. The second year focuses on taking the knowledge of how to access these emotional areas, and Appling "character" to the mix, making you really workable on a set, or in any other professional environment. The second year allows you to be able to really "crawl into someone else's skin." The second year is crucial to an actor, because let's face it when are you going to be playing a character that is just like yourself unless you just booked "Big Brother." This being said, without the first year, the second year is useless. I have been in classes where they attempt to teach character work without really exploring yourself and how you personally view and react to things and all that this results in is very "acty" acting, and quite simply put in this competitive marketplace, nobody will buy it. After you have completed Waynes two year program, he allows students to become part of his "professional level" of study. This is a class that takes all of the training and ability that you have amassed, and applies it to a real working context. In this class, you alternate between "work months" where you continue to stretch yourself and grow as an actor, and "casting director months" where you read for casting directors, as well as agent showcases (which is how I got my agent). This level of study is designed to take what you have learned, and start actually working as an actor. In summation I have to say that Meisner, and Wayne Dvorak are Hollywood's dirty little secret. A safe and very workable technique, and a caring, professional, highly skilled coach, who will make no predictions on who will be a "star", but if you want to learn how to act, I mean REALLY, REALLY be a GOOD actor, then this is the guy you train with...period! read more

The Wayne Dvorak Acting Studio.. I stumbled upon Waynes class about 6 months ago. I was looking to resume my acting training. The classes I had taken before were A. Way Overpriced! An actors gotta be able to support themself! B. Huge class size, only got to perform twice a month at MOST! C. Very scattered in their technique, focusing so much on breaking down a script and making judgments on what you think you should do rather than being open and allowing yourself to react organically. So I had been auditing several studios in the LA area. I was eager to get back into training but none of the studios I visited seemed to "feel" like a fit. Follow your instincts, right?! Auditing and watching the students perform, it felt more like they were being taught how to read the lines rather than actually respond to the situation. Over thinking in a way, which definitely shows up on those cameras! When I went to audit Wayne's class he had me arrive about a half hour before class and took the time to tell me about how he came into the Meisner technique. I had done a few Meisner repetition exercises before, but the way Wayne spoke about it really opened my eyes. It's really a very simplistic approach. The beginning few months are strictly repetitions. This is where a huge part of the discipline comes in. Unless you are dedicated to doing the exercises in class and the 2 rehearsals a week, it gets a little repetitive. It is when you are truly dedicated to the program that you begin to feel more aware of how you are actually feeling, even if the words aren't changing, their energy is. You begin to get out of your head and allow yourself to respond organically to your surroundings. Wayne is always very perceptive in his critiques and helps guide you by noticing the changes from week to week. You can really tell that he puts his heart into every class. I even joined the class a bit late and Wayne made time before his class to help my partner and I catch up! Oh and he also does great vocal warmups, throws in some Shakespeare for annunciation and does some exercises to really loosen you up and put that guard down! Not only within my acting, but within my life and really at the heart of it, within myself I can feel my awareness of my own being growing yet shedding more and more of the baggage, the judgements.. things that really keep you inside your own head. The funny thing is that the same things that keep you stagnant in your own life i.e. fear, over thinking what has or what will happen rather than what IS happening are the same things that shut off your creative intuition as an actor. Sooo.. Great perceptive teacher with lots of experience in the biz, affordable classes with a really comfortable atmosphere, I highly recommend this class for actors who really wish to become free within themselves and their acting. The things that make a character interesting are their own unique reactions, something which only comes from truth within the moment. Be well! read more

I had promised myself I would audit as many classes as possible before I picked the one I was going to commit to, because money is definitely tight. Wayne's Meisner studio was only the second one I saw, but I knew as soon as the audit was over I had found the right fit for me. Things that proved the deciding factors: 1) I'm an actress who comes from the stage and is looking to start working in film/television. Wayne speaks my language, he worked in both industries and understands what skills translate, and what bad habits need to be challenged and outgrown! 2) You actually get to work with Wayne, not with a bunch of other teachers who trained under him. 3) The other students who are drawn to this class are also hard working, serious actors. You grow a ton from working with each other in rehearsals and class. 4) You will always get to work and be seen EVERY CLASS. Sometimes the classes run a little long, or the classes seem a little small, but that's so everyone is getting a full chance to work the Meisner exercises or perform their scene study. 5) This is definitely one of the most affordable studios in town. But most of all 6) Wayne is exactly the kind of mentor/coach I like working with. He's analytical, observant, and direct. If he sees you disconnect in a scene or get self-conscious of the audience for even a moment, he will call you on it. And help you get better for next time. He really wants to help you grow, not make you feel bad. Which means he doesn't let you off the hook, but he doesn't tear you down either, and you feel yourself getting better and more consistent in your abilities over time. I can honestly breakdown crying from a place of real pain (not faking it) fairly consistently now, multiple times in a day, and recover, thanks to this class. Fair warning, Wayne's Meisner class is not for the faint of heart. Not only are you committing to class times, but two rehearsals every week with fellow students. The whole program is designed to be two years long (with holiday breaks). The scenes you will be assigned will easily be 10 pages long or more. For me, this was a no-brainer because I was looking for a challenge, and I want to be an actress for the rest of my life, so committing to a longer course of study while also auditioning and working was a good fit for me. For some it's not a good choice. When he has enough advanced students, he puts together a master class of students who get to perform in front of casting directors and agents, but he really won't put you there until you're ready. I've gotten really good headshot advice from, assistance preparing for an audition, and useful branding advice in little moments before and after class where you can talk freely with him. So whether you want an acting education as good as a conservatory training, or a class where you can flex your acting muscles, and fine-tune yourself professionally, you can get both out of Dvorak's studio. read more

I have learned so much from Wayne's class; coming from production work, my first hurdle in Wayne's class was to overcome my nerves of being on stage! Wayne teaches you techniques to overcome self-consciousness...I'm now auditioning and booking small jobs (one step at a time...), and I credit that to the work I've done in Wayne's class. The other tool I've gained, is the ability to connect, and stay connected to my scene or exercise partner. This skill is something I've started using in my daily life, in auditions (with casting directors, etc) and has definitely helped me get into many people's good graces...Once you are aware, and begin practicing connecting with others, you are truly able to live moment-to-moment as an actor (at least....you get a LOT better at it...) Wayne stresses being natural, and as a result it's taken away a lot of the fear of acting...if you just have to be yourself (at least in the first year of training...he focuses on character the second year), you always have the power to know if you are doing a good job.... Wayne reads people's emotions and pretenses very well, and he tells you exactly what critique/feedback you need to hear to take yourself to the next level...sometimes the class can be emotionally draining....but on those days you know you've done good work. It's almost like taking a medicine...sometimes it doesn't taste good, but once you start seeing the results you are immeasurable grateful...with Wayne...you see results...not just yours, but everybody's. As for the business side...Wayne will give you advice on your head shots, give you tips on how to take them, don insights into your casting, and shed bites of wisdom, stories and anecdotes to help you learn and make you laugh. I look forward to these each class... Lastly, Wayne starts each class with vocal exercises and diction...use these tools before any audition and it will help you go in there speaking strongly. He also knows how to use Meisner in comedy...and coming into the class with a love of humor...his ability to take a serious technique and apply it to something less dramatic (but still as truthful) is something I respect and value immensely. Wayne is Top Notch and that's real talk! When I started my search for an acting teacher I wanted to make sure I would be enthusiastic about coming to class. Really who wants to sit anywhere for 3 hours w/o a break studying anything? I did audit a few classes in the LA/Hollywood area but I knew right away this was the class for me. When you audit, he sits down with you 30 min. before class and explains to you what he does, the technique he teaches, and what we will prob. see in the class. I went to other classes and I didn't know what the heck they were doing. He involves you in the breathing exercises (which you may feel very foolish doing at first) and then you stay quiet as the class goes on. You can ask questions during certain times though and after the class is over, Wayne will call you the next day to go over some things. That's the audit process. The Class: Meisner Technique First off, Wayne is a hard teacher, which mean he will push you to your best potential. If you are shy get over it and if you think you are a hot shot, get over that as well. Wayne pulls truth and realness out of you. When I first started I was somewhat apprehensive about showing how I really felt about things and as I was told I was "theatrically" showing emotions and to just be myself. Second, the class is small. i don't think he has more than 12 ppl in a class and everyone goes up twice EACH CLASS! Even if you don't want to, lol. This means you are always working on the craft. Third, we do exercises and scenes. One thing I like about this is he will let you complete what you are suppose to do then talk about it after. No interruptions while you are doing something. Unless he really doesn't get it but that will come later. The bottom line is if you are serious about acting, this class is for you. If you work hard you will definitely see the growth within a few months. I have grown in my confidence about my work and ability to reach the emotion at hand truthfully and moment by moment. The program is a two year program, class is 1 nite a wk for 3 hours, you need 2 rehearsals outside of class and this is the min.but it's worth it. A couple years ago I moved out to LA, and enrolled in acting class after acting class. I was bombarded with classes that promised the quick success and fast approach to the movie machine. I quickly learned that these were all shams, mostly traveling medicine men with the potion that didn't work or gurus who claimed the answer but fell short of truth. I felt lost for awhile and decided I would do it by myself, I didn't need the class, but soon looked around at all my friends who claimed the same thing and said they were "actors" but all we ever did was sit around coffee houses talking about how much better we were then the people on the billboard above our table. I started to do a lot of reading about different methods, I dabbled in new age acting, took a sip of performance art, and dove head first into Stanislavski. I dug on what Stanislavski was saying and followed his progression of thought through the teachers of the past into Strasberg, Adler and Meisner. I felt much had been lost through the years in Strasberg and Adler. I read "Standford Meisner on Acting," and decided this was the type of class I wanted and needed. The tools and techniques that Meisner talked about I believed would make me a good a actor, and competitive in the world of Hollywood. I enrolled in Wayne's class about a year ago, and I have found it to be not only rewarding but also challenging. I have gone places that I didn't even know were possible. Through the work I have grown not only in my ability to act, but also personally. It has opened my eyes to all the little intricacies that are over looked by "civilians," and made me aware of my own action's effects on people. As I stated before I took many classes and one of the biggest problem was that I lost in a sea of people, but with Wayne he keeps the class small and you get to perform twice each class. Meisner training from an awesome, experienced acting teacher I'm so happy that I decided to take Wayne Dvorak's Meisner program. I came into this program about 7 months ago having some experience acting but no formal training. In the past I felt like I'd always been relying on basic instincts and an incoherent hodgepodge of tips that I had received from various teachers/directors over time, without really having a strong technical base to build on or a clear idea of who I was as an actor. Wayne has changed all of that for me not only through the Meisner training but through his thoughtful, specific, personal feedback. Wayne really takes the time to focus on and learn about each of his students (he keeps his classes small) in order help each of us to grow into ourselves as actors. He doesn't sugar coat anything, and you can expect to get very clear, honest, useful notes with no BS. This is also reflected in the studio's environment where you are challenged to deeply connect with your emotional life when you are acting and push yourself to be totally honest with yourself and your scene partner. Wayne does a great job of showing you how the Meisner exercises help you to be more present and real and how to apply the technique to scripted work. When doing scenework, he always chooses interesting, challenging scenes and puts a lot of thought into choosing roles that suit the students in the class and will push them into new areas. Wayne also has a lot of experience with the industry, having been a working actor himself, and was always willing to talk after class whenever I've sought career advice. But on top of all that, Wayne is just a great guy to be around. I think anyone who is serious about being an actor and is willing to put in the work every week (both in class and outside it in rehearsals), regardless of what their experience level is, will get a lot out of this class and will come out of it a better actor. read more

Wayne Dvorak's Meisner acting class has been an excellent experience, providing a challenging and rewarding study of the craft. Working in the industry as a director, I searched for a serious and structured experience that would immerse me into the actor's process. This class accomplished that and more. In addition to the Meisner technique, Mr. Dvorak teaches scene study, script interpretation, language, vocal exercises and other intangibles that I've found uniquely helpful in my work. Our class meets weekly in Los Feliz with at least two rehearsals a week completed outside the studio. We work through what Mr. Dvorak has designed as seven levels of the Meisner technique over a period of two years. Two years sounds like a huge commitment, and it is, but developing one's acting tools takes time, work and dedication and I believe that this structure works. Many of the exercises are difficult because Mr. Dvorak challenges you to operate outside of your comfort zone until you are comfortable and adept at visiting all the key emotional aspects of yourself. Class sizes are small and reasonably priced and though the program last two years, we take a hiatus in December and July. He's been teaching this class for many years and his experience is evident with his perceptive and honest critiques. As my class approaches the end of two years of study, I feel fortunate to have found Mr. Dvorak's program and am very appreciative of the experience and development as an actor and as a director, writer and creative person. My respect and admiration for the craft of acting has grown exponentially as has my confidence as an actor. I cannot imagine moving forward in my career without this experience. When first moving to Los Angeles I was wary of what type of class I wanted to take and with which instructor I would put my money and my trust into. There were just so many to choose from! I wanted to be careful because I had heard awful stories about classes not giving you your moneys worth, along with them being way too overpriced. I found out about Wayne's Meisner technique through a co-worker who simply raved about the class and all the benefits he had received since he had started. The next day I called Wayne, who was extremely welcoming and interested in my story, and booked an audit. After taking Wayne's class for over a year now, I can honestly say I've grown, not only as an actor, but personally as well. His technique teaches you to do some serious soul searching that enables you to truly know yourself inside and out. That in itself is one of the preliminary acting tools that is needed to make an actor great. He keeps his classes relatively small (10-12) in order to give his students the time and attention they deserve. I've been in class with Wayne for some time now and have found his class exceptionally professional and, moreover, generous and nurturing. Wayne has this uncanny ability to see through people - he's the kind of mentor that is honest with you but always relays his comments to you in the most friendly and constructive manner, making class a real safe-haven where it is painless for an actor to open up. At the studio you have no reason to hide behind any pretenses (and Wayne sees right through them, anyway). The Meisner technique is exceptionally effective; it helps you become an active observer, always in the moment, grounding yourself, letting go of 'acting' and letting your emotions come up naturally - creating true emotional depth. I've been studying Meisner technique with Wayne Dvorak for the past year, and have to say, it's been an amazing experience. First off, regarding the technique-- it has a way of opening you up emotionally. It allows you to gradually push the barriers of your comfort zone WAY out, so that you are able to access extremes (and subtleties) of your emotional spectrum in a grounded and sincere way. I've gained confidence and familiarity going places that would have scared the crap out of me before I started the training. The training also strips away all the layers "acting"-- the affectations, self-consciousness, pushing, broadcasting, indicating, mimicking, etc-- so that you're finally left with something simple and pure: a human being having a sincere experience. Getting to that place is truly liberating for an actor, and probably the most captivating for any audience to see. Now regarding Wayne, he is an incredible teacher. He doesn't operate from this place of trying to show off, or impress, or intimidate, or play favorites, or listen to himself talk all night. He's a true teacher, here's there to teach and nothing else. He has an incredible knowledge of this craft, and he has a way of reading right into you. He can see exactly what's going on in there, and he WILL, in the most subtle way, bring out your full potential. He's no nonsense, but he's all heart. When it comes to The Meisner Method and modern acting in general Wayne Dvoraks Acting Studio is at the forefront of LA quality training. Wayne considers himself an acting coach rather than a teacher because he's not only teaching you a craft, he's coaching you through your chosen profession. I've been training with Wayne for the better part of a year now and I've personally progressed dramatically in that time. Taking Waynes class is a personal commitment between the two of you. He only takes students he believes he can help and work with. Wayne limits his classes to no more than 14 students which is a huge benefit to us: we get more personal attention, we go up and work every week, and Wayne becomes very familiar with our personalities and mannerisms. Which makes the advice he gives us all the more beneficial. Most of the classes you'll find out here will have 30 plus students, a different teacher here and there, and will be much more expensive than what Wayne charges. Which tells you two things: one, Wayne isn't trying to get rich off his students. And two, he takes his students and craft personally. He wants to make dependable actors. He doesn't want us to book a couple gigs and fade out like most actors do. I'd recommend Wayne's Meisner teachings and Studio as a complete system and a great foundation you can always come back to. Having audited many LA acting schools, finally, I have found my home base! Wayne Dvorak's Meisner base classes are small and extremely safe for nurturing growth. It's not just about the craft of acting it's also about the business. Wayne takes time with each student to help them discover their own unique style and how to properly market themselves for optimum success. During the first year class each session starts with a group warm-up that involves proper breathing techniques, vocal exercises and improvisational games using Shakespearean monologues. Wayne insists his students should be as comfortable doing Shakespeare as they would be doing something contemporary. The classroom is set up much like a film set or audition room so he can extract the simplest most honest performances from his students. Wayne's critiques are daring, frustrating and encouraging all at once. That in itself takes a skilled instructor. All students are required to meet twice a week outside of class to rehearse. I can't say enough about Wayne Dvorak and his acting classes. He is much more than just an acting coach. he is the most caring, professional, humble and dedicated person that I have met. if everyone else in this world was more like Wayne, it would be a much better place. He treats everyone with respect and cares about them like they are his own. Even after I left his classes he continued to be like a mentor and a manager. Whenever I come upon something in my career, I know that i can count on him for insightful guidance and advice. Wayne's class taught me so much about acting. I wish that I had asserted myself more during some of the classes. It doesn't help to just do enough to get by, you need to go above and beyond to push yourself with every exercise! What you take away depends on you and Wayne is the best person to guide you through the learning process. His couching will make you much more real, honest in your acting. A previous student of Wayne Dvorak, I found that his class not only helped me become a better actor, it ultimately made me a more conscious, aware, honest person. With the intuition of a psychologist (or even a psychic at times!) he really understands not only how his students act but how they THINK and feel. I feel completely honored having been taught by such an incredible teacher who I often refer to as "the American Anthony Hopkins". Having experienced wonderful acting classes at UCLA, I still think that Wayne Dvorak is by far the best, most insightful teacher I have ever had. He is a true mentor as he is not only knowledgable about just about anything in "the industry" (or in general -- I've gotten sage advice from him about landlord issues!) -- he is also extremely trustworthy. And even though I have chosen to pursue writing and painting as two of my main passions in life, I feel completely enriched by my experience in his class and I truly believe that what I have learned has impacted my writing and my art -- as well as how I perceive myself and communicate with others. The Wayne Dvorak Acting Studio in Los Angeles, CA is a 2 year Meisner Technique training program. Aside from being one of the most affordable training programs in the city, it is also incredible training taught by an instructor with a lifetime of acting and teaching experience. Having taken years of acting classes in various methods the Meisner Technique is one that has only enriched my acting both emotionally and technically. Meisner has a very simple approach to a very complicated art and it is based on Meisner's exercise work as well as scene study. Wayne Dvorak is a no frills, no B.S. type of teacher who is only there to help his students craft and guide them through the "business" that is Hollywood. Wayne only allows 12 students max. in his program and you are GUARANTEED to work at least once in every class. I know many actors in LA that pay 3 times the amount I do and they get up to work in class every other week!! This training is not for the faint of heart since it is an intense program for 2 years and requires outside rehearsals which are key to success in this discipline. If you are serious about your training and are dedicated enough to put in the 2 years to complete the training, I cannot recommend a better place to study than at Wayne's studio. read more
