He's a large (~80 lbs) coonhound who is fine around other dogs, but has some anxiety challenges with people. He's also real loud and tends to make lots of noise when he's left alone. He's boarded there a bunch of times, once for over a week. We always include the day care option for him, which is an extra cost but worth it for him to have the outdoor time (they have a fenced area that I believe they use specifically for day care) and socialization with other dogs. This is the only place we've boarded him, but we tried some other day care options in town and have been happiest with the Dog Den. The staff there knows what they're doing with our dog, and it's helped us to feel confident leaving him there. He started off feeling very nervous during drop-off, but now is excited to go and knows exactly what to do. I've seen some negative reviews about experience with staff there. The guy in charge is direct, which sometimes comes off as gruff. I get the impression he likes dogs more than people, and frankly I'm totally fine with that because he knows his stuff around dogs. I've seen him directly correct some staff behavior that made my dog uncomfortable (see anxiety mentioned above), simply by quickly observing his body language and understanding his specific needs. Other places have failed in this where the Dog Den succeeded. That's not to say the other staff there performs poorly, I've always been extremely happy with everyone there (he LOVES Carly- she's amazing and I hereby advocate for her raise). Just that my dog, like many dogs, has some specific needs. We'll continue to recommend the dog den for both day care and boarding, even though it's sort of out of the way for us. In my experience, their staff has shown to be very competent and professional with the animals in their care.

I'm not usually someone to post something like this, but I'm extremely angry. Last Sunday, Kyle and…read moreI went to the Terre Haute Humane Society and wanted to adopt a dog. First off, we wanted to adopt an older/adult dog (not a puppy) because we know there are so many that have likely been there for a long time, while puppies seem to go in and out pretty quickly because everyone wants a puppy. After asking to see 4-5 different adult dogs and not seeing a single one of them, the staff steered us in the direction of a puppy. It really seemed like they did not want to show us any of the adult dogs. They had a few litters of puppies, and mentioned 2 chiweenie puppies. Kyle has been wanting a weiner dog so we asked to see those two. They brought them both out to us and we fell in love with them! We decided we would apply to adopt one of them (I'm only allowed to have one pet living on campus). We hung out with the puppies and held them for about a half hour, and then filed an application to adopt. While we were hanging around in the lobby with the puppies, a couple came in to pick up a cat they were set to adopt, and a staff member told them that the cat was gone because another family had come and adopted it between the time they applied and Sunday when they had an appointment to pick it up. The couple was completely blindsided by this and was really upset, but went ahead and picked out a different cat. This should have been a red flag to us, looking back. So anyways, we file our application and we were told that they would call us on Tuesday to let us know if we were approved. We were so excited, as soon as we left we went straight to pet smart and looked at the prices on beds, food, puppy pads, harnesses and leashes, toys, etc. to prepare for if we were approved. Well, Tuesday comes and goes and we heard nothing. Wednesday at lunch we still hadn't heard anything, so I called and left a voicemail. The same thing happened on Thursday. Yesterday was pretty crazy for me so it totally slipped my mind to check in on Friday. So, today Kyle drives out to the shelter and when he walked in, the staff member literally said to him, "What do you want?" Kyle explained why he was there, he hadn't heard back after leaving messages, and the staff member said "Uh nope. Not the chiweenies. They're gone." Kyle asked what they meant and they told him that a family had come and adopted both of them this week. They first of all never contacted us to even let us know if we were approved, let alone to inform us that the dog we wanted was gone. We were very excited for this puppy, so of course we're a little sad about it not working out and we can only hope both of them went to a good home, but I'm extremely angry from the lack of communication and professionalism from the staff at the Terre Haute Humane Society. I'm really sad too because I have always been an "adopt, don't shop" type of person which is why we went the route of adopting through a local shelter. However, I don't think Kyle and I will ever support them in the future, which hurts because we know that each and every animal in that shelter deserves better, happier, fuller lives. But this is already the second time in the span of one week that I've witnessed/experiencing this happening. I'm not here to tell you not to adopt from them, because those animals need good homes, but please don't get attached to a specific animal or expect any kind of communication or professionalism from them, or you will be let down.

I cannot speak highly enough of this organization. They are a non-profit, no kill shelter for cats…read moreand dogs. I have personally adopted two dogs from HART over the past several years and these animals are two of the kindest, most gentle creatures on the planet. The description of the dogs' struggles and strengths was accurately described by staff. Both were well adjusted and people friendly. The shelter itself is clean and the dogs appear well taken care of. Staff stayed in the room with me as I met the dog to answer questions and to see the relationship between myself and the dogs. The application is available online and it can be pre-approved before you even see a dog. This really cuts down on the disappointment that the dog you were interested in might be adopted by someone else while they determine your suitability. With both dogs, we were sent home with the heartworm medication that had been started at the shelter. For one of my dogs, that was almost three months of medication. My dogs were both fixed and fully vaccinated. They were both chipped. The adoption fee was a little under $200. Some might feel that is a lot for a mutt a few years old. I'm here to tell you I actually wrote a check for my dogs that exceeded the adoption fee because I was so very grateful for the way they run their business. I want HART to continue to have the ability to to flourish and grow. PetSmart sometimes features their animals during their adoption events in store. You can also give donations to HART at PetSmart during some points in the year. Consider supporting them with your donations and adoptions. It is well worth it.

We started the adoption process because we saw a beautiful dog on petfinder.com that we fell head over heels for. We submitted our information, and when I didn't hear anything for a week, I called to leave messages as well as emails. It took two weeks to finally have someone call me. The people that run this place, claim that the lack of professionalism in responding to simple phone calls and emails, is the fact that they run a small operation. Whatever, all I know is that they strung me along for over two weeks, and when they finally called our references (this past Saturday), the puppy that I was looking to adopt had already been adopted 4 days earlier! I found out on facebook, when I was checking out their page to see when they were having a fundraiser, when they had a great picture of somebody with the puppy I thought would be mine. I'm going to have to stop writing this review, as the tears are getting on the keyboard.
