I've been wanting to check this place out since I moved down the street a few years ago. The bartend was super friendly and happily explained the membership requirement. I also got to chat to a few of the regulars. It is an intimate space, but it was really nice. It is all bar stool seating and there's a step up into the bar and then another couple of steps to the bathroom. So not ADA friendly, but like most bars they're just dealing with the cards they were dealt in the early 1900s when they were opened! There is nothing NOT to love about this place. We have been going here for years. It is small, but mighty. The service is always great, the staff is kind, speedy, and the pours are good. The drink selection is fine, if you're looking for craft beers or anything fancy, this isn't your vibe. If you're looking for an awesome neighborhood hole in the wall, that's completely clean and nice, where the owners frequent and learn your name, this is your spot. It is membership only (I assume it still is) so you need your $10 membership card and you used to need to come in with someone who is already a member. Dive bar with strong tall cheap drinks! This place was really busy on this sat night & definitely got loud in there.

My friends and I hung out at The Keyhole and had a great time! The atmosphere is fantastic and we had so much fun. That is until a gentleman (and his wife) who claimed to be the best friend of the owner walked in and threatened to fight a few in our group unprompted. We were finishing our drinks and singing to the great music while this gentleman continued to threaten us and continued (again unprompted) to let us know that he knew the owner of the establishment. The only reason I could give a single star is due to the bartender who was so nice! read more

This is the king of neighborhood hole-in-the-wall dive bars. It's small, very small, with an even smaller little patio filled with regular people just hanging out and having a good time. This is a members only bar, however they didn't require a membership fee when I went there last year so we stopped by for a drink. My friend asked the bartender how the Chiefs were doing as we sat at the bar. She answered 'why would I know that. I don't have time for that!' The game was on the tv next to her, and she was drying a single glass, serving no drinks at the time. Very strange response, especially for a bartender who is typically well versed in small talk. Then we tried to order and she told us we'd each have to pay $10 for a membership fee. We said we weren't interested and we'd just go somewhere else. Then she raised our voice as we walked away and yelled, 'So you're never coming back here ever again? Ok, whatever!' The interaction was off putting. First you're rude to us, seemingly for coming in unaware of your firm membership policy. Then you're rude due to our lack of interest in becoming members. It's a bummer because it's in a great location. Had the bartender been polite and engaging, we'd probably have paid the fee and gone back at another time. read more

Decor consisting of old beer signs, swimsuit model calendars, and a picture of a white dog that looks possessed. A liquor selection with all the basics. Cheap beers on tap. A good bartender. If you love small neighborhood bars with cheap drinks, outdoor seating in the summer, friendly staff who know your name and regulars who make you feel welcome, then you'll love The Keyhole in Mission. I've had the opportunity to take several friends there who were hesitant at first, but ended up loving it. Unlike Kristen B's experience, I have never had an "older lady bartender" ... but then again we may have different ideas of what qualifies. I've always found the Keyhole to be a great place to relax & have a drink - and isn't that what a bar is for? One note, like other small "dive" bars the Keyhole only takes cash so don't even try to throw the plastic on the bar unless you want it tossed right back at you. read more

This bar gets 3 stars because it is what is and that is what it is. It is a tiny dive bar that sells cheap drinks and has older lady bartenders who kick you out with yelling and no apology(nothing wrong with their age, just a detail that I find qualifies a certain type of bar). I went here several times with an old roomie, whose "crew" made the Keyhole their "spot". It has one bowling game and maybe one other game a few tables and a bar with five stools. I saw a good friend that a had not seen in awhile here. It was so random but she told me they love it. I guess it is the laid-back, no nonsense, no dress code atmosphere that becomes charming when you have been going to bars for awhile and have seen the gimicks--scantily clad wait staff, door guy with secret service microphone, cover charges, too hip for his britches DJ-- and at the end of the day all you want is to talk to your friends and drink a few adult beverages without breaking the bank. The Keyhole is charming in the same way Panchos Mexican food is a good late night feast and your ex-boyfriend 's two am phone call is the idea of the century---it's not really explainable--it just is what it is. read more

This place might have the best dive bar toilet in the city. My friend who takes Imodium AD anytime he thinks about going out was comfortable using it. Very tight fit inside. Bar only, no food...unless you count a couple of crockpots that were sitting on a table. I would only recommend going here when it's nice outside so you can enjoy the surprisingly large patio in the back. The owner, or maybe he was just a bartender, played the boy Superman in the original Superman movie. He was also apparently in Pumpkinhead. read more

The bartender was very friendly, and helped us feel welcome even though we had no idea about the rules of a private club. The Keyhole opened as a private club, which bars in Kansas are forced to do if less than 33% of their money is made on food sales. Dumb law. Anyway, they had not been enforcing this and got slapped with a huge fine so now they are following the dumb law rules. What this means: If you want to buy drinks at the Keyhole you have to be a member or the guest of a member. Memberships cost $10 and you get two free drinks with the purchase, so really you're paying for two drinks and a small fee. And you only have to do it once. Or if you're a guest, you don't have to pay anything. You just...sign in. The laws are dumb but they have to follow it. I hope this doesn't turn people away because it really is a good bar and a fun time. read more

So, my husband and I went to this bar earlier this week and absolutely loved it. It was the quintessential dive bar we had been looking for. We went back today for happy hour and were really disappointed. It turns out that you have to purchase a yearly membership for this bar in order to drink there. When we went last no one told us about this membership, and when we asked for clarification because we were from out-of-state and simply didn't understand, the bartender was really rude to us and didn't really explain. We ended up buying a membership and staying for a couple of beers. We probably won't go back, but if you are looking for somewhere for a quick drink, know you'll have you purchase the right to drink there. read more

(In parts) I lolled at the post that mentioned bathroom(s), that is a singular entity at this establishment. Sometimes there is live music, usually one guy, but he's cool. Recently, they've added a hilariously enormous TV in the corner as well. What's nice about this place is the group always has different interests. This past Saturday it was dancing while touching every person in the bar, watching the Royals game, singing songs like they were streaming from my ipod and apparently founding as ass appreciation group. Dive bar. Let me repeat - dive bar. This is not a swanky, see-and-be-seen, sip a martini, dine on tapas bar. They serve cold domestic beer and shots made from Tang (yes, the orange stuff). But, if you like dive bars, this place is the real deal ... fun, laid back, friendly service, clean bathrooms and occasional live music. Once or twice a week, a group of masked individuals stealthily piles into a black van. Their mission is simple: to round up at least 3 rowdy, incredibly interesting or hilarious people and drop them off at the Keyhole Tavern. In my mind, something like this must be happening every other time I'm in this place. Yes, the establishment is a dive. The patrons and staff wouldn't have it any other way. This simply doesn't matter, because with a crowd-pleasing jukebox, a terrific cast of characters and good, solid service as Chad S. mentioned, you're most likely in for a good time. Whether singing Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" at the top of your lungs with Zambian natives, being told you're "semi-cute and man smart" or watching a random guy with a goofy hat try to play guitar along with live entertainment that wasn't invited to do so, you're going to have a good time. Bathroom with toilet on cinder blocks and padlock to hold door closed? Check. Barely working climate control that recirculates smoke? Check. The cheapest drinking you can do outside your own home? Check. The service has always been average to good and you can't beat the prices. $2 will get you a bottle of anything pretty much any day of the week. If you go on a weeknight and do the specials, I'm not sure you can drink that cheap at home now that I think about it. So if you aren't a clean freak and don't mind a little smoke, this is a good place to hang out. I think the coming smoking ban will include this place, so I really need to go by and see if they are still open. read more

I stumbled upon this place tonight thinking I had found a jewel in my neighborhood, only to be treated with disrespect. My friend and I sat at a table for 10 minutes until a nice guy called the bartender over to us. With no greeting she began speaking with disdain, telling us that people come to the bar for drinks and that you had to be a member or sponsored by a member to come there. The nice guy offered to sponsor us and she barked at him. Not hard to politely say, "I am sorry ladies but this is a private club." Either way, I don't want their membership anymore than they want mine! We ended up at Hurricane Allies and had a blast! read more

The thought of Saturday night at a place like this holds such a special place in my heart that it brings me to tears. We moved to Mission over a year ago and found this little dive.(The OLDEST Bar in Johnson County) It's now our home away from home! YES, we are members! This private club (dumb law but cheap membership), is the most laid back environment you will find. The bartenders are great, drinks are cheap and the jukebox has the BEST cheesy music ever! Ahh.. The Keyhole.. Quintessential hole in the wall dive.. And proud of it, complete with allegations of coke dealing former bar wenches, crock pot buffet spread, and yes the $1 shot (was sunny-d.. now tang??). This place almost gives you street cred in mission, and once you go here you will stay away from JJ's. Almost charming with the mix of patrons and strong jukebox. The Key Hole is not meant to be the hottest spot in town. You go here for a cold beer, and a visit with the locals. The city of Mission are nice folks, and are known to strike up a good conversation. My wife and I have been going to the Key Hole for years. We really enjoy all the bartenders. There is only ONE bartender a time working and running the bar for the shift. keep that in mind. I have some advice that could come in handy when you go to this bar. First off is really no bigger then your living room, but that does not mean it is your living room. They have a closing time and when the bartender says it is time to go, it is time to go. NO apologies should be necessary Kristen B . So maybe leave the over blow sense of entitlement at home in your living room. Maybe don't get as drunk as you would in you own living room. If you do they bartender has a right not to serve you. Second they only take CASH. We know it's 2010 but that is how it is. Don't look at the bartender like they have three head and is lying to you because they Don't take a credit card (OR a debit card) genius. Third opinions are like assholes every one has one, and if you act like one then no one really gives a crap about your opinion. My wife and I have a hard time figuring out why people forget that there are boundaries at this bar just as there are at any other drinking establishment keep that in mind and you will have a great time.
