Note that what I want to say has nothing on the business itself. The owner, Jessica, is more than accommodating and understanding and almost all of the stylists working in her salon are incredible. I went to the salon looking to do a balayage. I was told by hairstylist Jennifer in confidence that what I wanted can be easily done. 5 hours later and my hair was fried (had to cut more than two inches) and it had turned green/blue. And looked so disgusting that I had to keep my hair up or braided to not draw attention. The entire appointment Jennifer was rude and making excuses for the AWFUL things she was doing to my hair. She got to the point of cutting random chunks of my hair. I was naive and thought it was my fault based on the fact I had never lightened my hair before. She was blaming the way my hair was colored (wasn't colored), the way my hair was cut, and any other excuse she could pull. I later found out that this woman specializes in MENS HAIRCUTS. and had never mentioned to me once about how uncomfortable she was or unconfident that she could do a good job. She kept me under the dryer for almost 40 minutes with bleach and foil in my hair. And toward the end of the appointment admitted defeat by saying "I don't care what clients think of their hair, as long as I like it I know I did a good job." It's safe to say I got a refund from the owner who again, was incredibly nice. I'm just baffled that this other professional did not mention her uncertainty once and royally messed up my completely healthy hair. I was able to fix it at Beautiful People salon in Cromwell (see my review on their page to see final results). I will never be asking for Jennifer again, and am so disappointed with how unprofessional the entire experience was. read more

This place REALLY damaged my hair. Kelly Marie who's an absolute sweetheart was my 1 time hairdresser. I have black hair & wanted a dark, plum almost eggplant color. She must have used a very strong developer (or something) because what I walked out with was ORANGE, BRASSY hair. Not to mention that my hair STARTED SMOKING when Kelly Marie had it in the foils. I alerted her, she made a face like, "Oh no," unfolded the foil, took a look & just closed it back up & left it on for another 15 or so minutes...what in the world?! End result, the entire top of my head lost about 8 inches and then they had the nerve to charge me $200+ for it! I was realistic in my color choice & was still staying in the "dark" color family so why did I walk out with orange, brassy hair? When I say orange...I mean literally orange. I was too nice since I saw Kellys eyes get watery when I told her it wasn't what I wanted and I didn't notice the fall out until I got home. The next day, I went back and had Sammy Jo try to fix it. She applied a nice color that quickly washed off after my 1st wash. All I was left with was dried, orange, shreds of long and short brillo-like hair. Only if you don't like your hair, then you can give them a try. Maybe they'll do a nice job with cuts but I woudn't trust them with color or anything that involves chemicals. read more

Just popped in here tonight for a bit of pampering. I saw the glowing reviews here on Yelp and thought to give them a try since my hair was in desperate need of a good trim and my back was in desperate need of a little TLC thanks to recent snow shoveling. My evening started with a massage treatment with Roz. The spa area is upstairs in a spacious yet private area. The room was clean and kept pleasantly warm for the cool evening. The massage itself was magic! Roz did a wonderful job easing my muscle tension and offering deep relaxation. Afterwards I had my hair trimmed by Sasha. I got my bangs and ends trimmed with angles put in to frame my face since it was one length previously and I wanted to change it up a bit. Sasha was very meticulous to detail and did an amazing job. My hair came out looking and feeling silky and healthy. Both ladies were very friendly, talented and attentive. Thank you Yelp reviewers - you didn't steer me wrong. Great service and conversation from Erin! This was my first time there, and it was worth it. Parking is easy (small lot in the front, but a bigger one in the back). The place is more like a salon, but they handle men's haircuts (like mine) as well. I went as a walkin and was greeted and taken in quickly - no real wait at all. The place is decorated more like a salon (vs a barbershop) so I thought I might be paying extra for that, but the prices were very fair - can't argue with that! One of the most unique things they offer is a hair wash while you lie on a massage table... you end up getting a scalp massage while they wet/wash your hair. It was a cool experience, and I can see how people would fall asleep there! In the end, I got a great, quality haircut and a good price. They have lots of other services, and I hope to take advantage of the massages they offer (the 3-pack for $165 is a great deal!) Certainly, they offer more services that lean more towards women (color, facials, waxing, etc)... so maybe I'll get my wife to go, too. read more

This salon is absolutely wonderful! Not only do my boyfriend and I go there, all of our friends, both male and female go here. We all see Rebecca and could not be happier with her professionalism, knowledge, and just all around great personality. We book our appointments for months at a time because she is popular and can be difficult to book, but we look forward to seeing her each and every time. The salon is clean, super modern, and always evolving to bring in something fantastic! They have coffee and tea for you when you arrive, a relaxing room for when you get your hair washed (which included massage beds!), and they even have a men's only area with barber chairs and huge tvs. The boyfriend and all our guy friends love it. They recently have expanded their spa services and have dedicated massage, waxing, and beauty rooms. We've never gotten a massage but the waxing is top of the line. The best thing after their exceptional service is the affordable prices. $40 for a woman's haircut is almost unheard of in Connecticut, but Iron Scissors keeps it low cost and the customers keep coming back. Absolutely perfect! Alyssa S. paid attention to every detail and gave me a perfect hair color and cut! She made me feel spoiled and pampered. Everyone is attentive and so friendly! The juice bar is amazing! I loved the service I received so much that I pushed for my fiance to forgo his normal cut at the barbershop and make an appointment with Alyssa also. I absolutely love this place. My stylist is Kelly Marie and she is excellent. I always seem to get a few compliments after my haircuts with her and one coworker commented that lately my hair has looked its best and I owe that to Kelly. My husband comes here and he also loves it, I will say that HIS hair has looked its best too (he used to get it done by this awesome guy who dropped of the face of the planet and then he went to Cost Cutters...so that sucked). BK does his hair and gives him wine and beer which he always appreciates. Did I mention I get my eyebrows done here too? Well I've said so long to getting them done at a nail salon and they are finally starting to go back to the way I like them. I used iron scissors/ J Bridal for my wedding in June in Madison CT. I can not suggest them enough, these girls are absolutely amazing. They made me and my bridal party feel like fashion models :) The make up was flawless and the hair - they did anything my bridesmaids wanted and my bridal hair was so beautiful. Jenna is so professional, it was so nice to know that I was in good hands and didn't have to stress about hair and make up the day of the wedding. The people are all very nice. But I got my hair done. The color isn't what I really wanted an even washed out after a couple days. My hair is WAY OVER processed and soooo damaged its not even funny. I haven't dyed my hair in years. I had beautiful healthy hair - I wanted to try something new figuring it wouldn't damage my hair too bad considering. Well not my hair is like straw, I can barley get a brush through it and the amount of hair that falls out is unreal. The pic I posted is after one brushing. Sooo disappointed. I loved it here! I was guided here by the great reviews I saw and my desire for my first real "adult" haircut. You can get your hair trimmed anywhere, and usually I did. I had no problem with a 10 minute trim at Super Cuts. My hair is long, straight, and one length, so it was easy. I had something specific in mind for my next cut though. Although probably still pretty easy, I had this fear that what I wanted wasn't going to be what I got. A fear I'm sure many of you share after hearing at least a few friends with horror stories at some point in your life. Yelpers guided me to the right place though. First of all, they were booked solid this week, and scheduling for me is kind of difficult. I don't get back in from work until 6:30 at the earliest, and they close around 7. Despite all of this, one of the stylists said she would still make an appointment for me and stick around for 7. I thought that was so nice. It definitely eased some of my first time nervousness. I only waited a few minutes after I arrived for my appointment. They had coffee and tea available in the waiting room. I really love the little things, so that was also a plus for me. We went back to the wash room first. It was a dimly lit room with soothing music playing. Instead of the uncomfortable seat with the sink, you are lying down on a table with a vibrating/massaging mat under you. After a long day at work, I was in heaven! The rest of my nervousness was gone. My stylist, Kelly, massaged it right out of my head. She asked me what I was looking to do with my hair and I pulled up a picture on my phone. Since I had never actually had my hair "styled," I didn't really know what to say. Kelly looked at the picture and went right to work. She was extremely nice and we talked the whole time. Then, before I knew it, she was done. When I looked in the mirror I was so excited and happy. I absolutely loved it. The whole experience was great. I've been going here for the past couple of months to get my eyebrows waxed. They do the waxing in a spa room, which is very relaxing. I've never enjoyed getting waxed (I don't think anyone does) but every time I've gotten it done here, it feels like a face massage! The staff is very friendly and make you feel right at home. We have searched all over to find my boyfriend a signature place and stylist to cut our hair, and we found. We stumbled across it from YELP and YELP did not mislead us! Our stylists name was Kelly and she was AMAZING. She did an amazing job with him, and I made an appointment for myself during check out. You deffinatly get your moneys worth! When I moved to Middletown, I was nervous I was not going to find a great salon that provided me with everything I need. I'm very picky with Customer Service and quality of the service I'm receiving. The Iron Scissors has not disappointed me once. From my hair, waxing, facials, massage and spray tan, they do it all and with the utmost professionalism. The girls really listen to what you want and they are all extremely talented. I think what makes the salon work is that you can tell the staff all works as a team to make sure that every customer is satisfied. My husband, who hates getting his hair cut loves it and so does my 8 year old son. They both go to Emily who is great with kids. While Renee does most of my services and she is outstanding, I have seen all the girls at one time or another and they are all terrific. I don't think I've ever seen a staff work so hard. I recommend this salon to anyone in the Middlesex area. If cost is an issue, they will work with you to make sure you get the most for the money you can spend. If I could give this salon 10 stars I would!! Yesterday was my first visit, but it certainly won't be my last. I am a young 65, and I didn't want to leave with a "blue perm". Well, no worries there. Melissa was gracious and oh so talented. I will go there for the rest of my life, God willing. I would like to mention the fabulous hair washing stations, at least one of which is a massage table, so I had my hair washed and my back massaged at the same time! I would definitely recommend Melissa. For example, she asked me if I wanted to go with a base or "rich" hair color. I have never been asked that question, ever. I told Melissa that I would love to go rich if she promised it wouldn't be dark. She assured me that the color would be richer but not darker. She did a fantastic job, and I love my color! If you've ever had brown hair come out almost black, the you know how horrifying that is. The "quiet" room is something I would advise all salons to have. It makes a huge difference to the experience. So, look out, Iron Scissors, I'll be back!! read more

I had Renee cut my hair and she did what she wanted not what I wanted. she talked non stop all about herself. She had the gall to cut layers in the back of my hair. I was so upset that it took me a long time to complain. I called the salon and left a message for Renee that she should Talk Less and Listen More. My bangs were way too short also. Just moved to town from california and was struggling to find a new spot. Soooo happy I found The Iron Scissors. Randomly got setup with Sammy-Jo and always get a great haircut, good conversation and a very comfortable atmosphere in the salon. It's sort of a non-traditional setup for the stations, but it works amazingly well and doesn't feel so isolated like you can in many comparable places. I had to make an impromptu hair appointment at a new salon because I was not able to make my regularly scheduled appointment with my hair stylist. After doing some research, I found Iron Scissors by my home that looked appealing. The rates were reasonable and all I needed was a quick root touch-up. I was able to book an appointment after I left work, which I was pleased with. I walked in to the salon to meet Angie, who is very nice. I was impressed with what she did from beginning to end but I was shocked at the end when she provided me with the cost. A root touch-up and glaze came to $110! This is how much I pay for a touch-up and highlights regularly...and that's in Avon! I asked her to explain the cost breakdown and was told a blow-dry is 30, root touch-up is 60 and the glaze is typically 40 but she would give it to me for 20! WHAT??!! I was so taken aback from the cost that I was speechless! For a blow-dry and root touch-up at my regular hair salon, I'm charged 65; a blow-dry is included. This was so unappealing. Needless to say, I have learned my lesson and will NOT be returning. read more

This is the best place to get a haircut, coming from a guy. They have a men's only section with TV's playing SportsCenter,an XBOX, and I was service a tasty home brew belgium ale while getting my hair cut from Kelly who is amazing. The prices are very low considering this is a salon and spa. And when they wash your hair they it's more like a scalp massage (you are laying down). I have searched a long time to find someone I trust to cut and color my hair, and I am VERY particular about it. Ever since I found the Iron Scissors, I have stopped looking. The girls there are great. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating and they know what they are doing. I gave very little instruction on how I wanted my hair to look, and let Kelly work her magic. I was very pleased with both my cut and color. The cut was flattering and grew out well. I had gotten my hair colored in some what of an ombre, and it blended and looked perfect. The salon itself is very neat and clean and has a relaxing vibe. I find the price range typical of a salon. I'm not sure if this is something they still do, but when I first called they did have a price range to choose from, and would match you with the stylist based on that. My stylist was Jessica who gave a great haircut and kept the conversation going. The place is beautiful and if you get your hair washed, you lay on a table that massages you. I was a long time client. Today was my breaking point with terrible scheduling services. I booked an appt for cut and color over two months ago when paying for my last services. This morning, I showed up for my appt, checked in and went to wait for my stylist--who by the way is great. After a few minutes, the receptionist came over and said there was a "misunderstanding" and that my appt was for another time. After a few more minutes she explained that I was correct and that time had been changed--to schedule another client. She said "several" messages had been left. I checked my phone and only saw one--from the day before that I had somehow missed. I would expect that if a service time was being changed that the salon would continue to call and not leave one message the day before the appt. On top of it, they didn't even have the correct services booked. I was told that I could have either one or the other service not both as had been previously booked and that I would have to wait. I explained that this is not the first time that they have made scheduling mistakes. I have been called, while on my way to the appt, and told "if you can get here a few minutes early she can start right away", only to get there and sit and wait for 30 minutes. I was offered a discount on a future visit--but seeing how Saturday appts book, I wouldn't be seen for a couple of months. No thanks. Too many scheduling issues with their front desk. Too bad because Kellie is great. Too frustrating to have appts changed and booked incorrectly. read more

I came here to get my hair and makeup done for my July wedding - and loved everything about the experience. First of, I definitely put off making this appointment until the very last minute (I'm pretty sure I called them in mid-June looking for a mid-July Saturday appointment), and the team was accommodating despite being rather busy. So, points for management. Second, blond Kelly is beyond amazing... Not only is she a pleasure to work with, but she's also super professional and really really good at both hair and makeup. She showed me three different hairstyles any one of which would've been great for my wedding day - but, as a real perfectionist, she saved the best for last... My friends couldn't stop talking about the flowers in my hair :-) And, I don't usually wear a lot of makeup and really didn't want to look overdone, but Kelly did a fabulous job at making me look naturally glowing! Even my boyfrie... oops, husband, who really wanted me to just wear a ponytail and not wear any make up, had to admit Kelly's work was a masterpiece! I would totally go to Kelly all the time - I'd say she's as good as, if not better, than my regular NYC stylist - but, Middletown is just too far from home :-) read more
