This good review is for all of the hard working nurses that are there. Not for the doctors. It's…read moreunfortunate, but with a lot of incorrect diagnosis's, prognosis's, and advice I have grown to have a distrust in their capabilities here. The nursing staff is beyond amazing though. While my father in law has been here, they have done so much to take care of him. They have treated him with kindness, ensured he was comfortable at all times, and always were ready to answer a barrage of questions we would have for them. One thing that upstate needs to change, is the fact they charge $8 a day for their patients tv on top of a $6.50 activation fee. This is not a joke or exaggeration. The tv that is already fully functional costs 8 bucks a day... I wouldn't mind a couple of bucks, but some patients have nothing but tv to keep them entertained. Some families may not be able to afford that extra cost.

I brought my wonderful adult daughter who lives with me to Upstate's ER…read more Even though their site has references to autism groups where parents have input, don't believe it. Their head of psychiatry may specialize in anxiety-- something our high functioning kids struggle with-- his knowledge never served my daughter. Even though there are clinics, research, pharmaceuticals being researched, their practice was in the dark ages about my daughter. The worst part of the nightmare of her being their patient is their gridlock determination to separate you as their parent and not allow you to have a say or advocate You can't "glare, raise your voice, or look angry"-- and believe me the hoards of them that you have to deal with are absolutely exasperating. But within half a day I had a nurse 3" from my face yelling at me what not to do, which in fact is exactly what I'd been given as perimeters about what I could do. I was glared at by 80% of the person assigned for personal care. They felt threatened I guess because they saw their position as time to sit and play on their cell phone. None introduced themselves. Some looked for ways to take a personal vendetta out on me. The psychiatrist went his own merry way doing what he pleased. Prescribing meds we had already ruled out. None would give her what she was on, works for her, no side effects. They made 5 seriously wrong medicine choices ignoring our input including what given with those meds protects her. She had 3 life endangering meds give n, which we knew not to put her on. When I pointed out she was experiencing those side effects, I was told she was just tired (one could lead to coma then death). When her symptoms were over, she was caom, they had on their own pulled all meds, when I asked for discharge papers I wasn't given, she was a voluntary admission on a medical floor. . .I chose to take her out and leave. To which I was threatened arrest, threatened to be handcuffed, 30 people surrounded her. I was ordered out of the building and never allowed in again. 2 weeks later I get a 20m phone call to her a day. Neither of us has ever say in a team mtg about her. She has been there isolated in a room w no visitors no stimulation none of the love she is accustomed to minimal minimal care for going on 2 months. No discharge plan. New med every 10 days. Set up discharge criteria not even their social worker can meet for us. No consistency of nurses, assistant staff, medical dr The nursing and hospital administration are fully aware. The psychiatric dept head No lawyer in Syracuse thinks she is worth fighting for if she is in Upstate. No established disability protection position or agency. I finally had to go out of state to bring a real advocate here Whatever you do, don't let upstate get it's death grip on your beloved child We just came into the ER for help with meds she has taken well and without side effects for 4 yrs, still prescribed out of state They knocked her out, and then proceeded to damage her best vein for drawing blood. They raised a 4" hematoma on the top of her wrist. I had to ask for an ice pack, which they kept removing.
