This review is more of a review based on aesthetic of the campus. I have not feeling either way of the university, I just wanted to see the architecture. I had no idea of how this campus was laid out so I just started walking until I did stumble upon a map of the campus. It was hard to follow as it had the buildings all labeled on the map, but there was no coordination when that correlated to the map key. I just wanted to walk around and take some pictures as it was a nice day and some of the buildings are beautiful. I walked from one end of the pedestrian walkway to the other, back towards where my hotel was. A little about Syracuse University. Established in 1870 as a private research university. Interesting fact, it started as a seminary outside of Rochester. After some financial difficulties they decided to move to Syracuse because that would give them a better chance at surviving. Other interesting things, it was found as coeducational and racially integrated. First university in the country to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts. read more

If you're always wasted on booze And you hate when your Bball team lose I know just the place (Depending on your race?) And it's a Uni called Syracuse You could never accuse me of avoiding major colleges when exploring cities, but you could SYR-accuse me of coming to the University of Syracuse a little too often. If you saw what the people I know here look like, and how much fun they are, you'd understand. Most of my Caucasian friends that go here absolutely love it, and party every night. My 2 black friends that went here and my 1 Latina friend that goes here at the moment painted very very different pictures. Shockingly so. Anecdotal, yes, but I have these types of anecdotes of my own, can it be coincidence? All my years at Universities in England and a very right wing one in DC and I never saw or experienced anything like that. It's not surprising to me that racism issues have been raised recently at this Uni, because some of the things I've witnessed on wild nights at this campus, although it can be really crazy and sexy and cool, are very rough and intimidating and clearly prejudiced and hate-fueled. There are issues here. They need to sort those out. Period. This is a beautiful University campus with some really fun and cute people attending, some of whom I am lucky enough to call my friends. But they charge way way way too much for me to give them a 5-star rating despite the beautiful old style campus that I have spent a lot of time on. Strong Hearts (for milkshakes) on Genesee St is the highlight for me in the area, get the Cesar Chavez, trust me. I couldn't believe what I saw when I attended a recent Syracuse University party. It was very disappointing. They took over the grounds of a Synagogue and the building next door, and the one hour later, it look like a wasteland. I've never seen so much trash and so many broken bottles from just an hour or so of partying. Tailgating before a game it looks like. As I said, very disappointing. The broken glass was the main issue. It was everywhere. Very dangerous and difficult to clean up. I saw several kids, mainly males, breaking said bottles. Not cool. My old review said - This is a beautiful University campus with some really smart people going here... some of whom I am lucky enough to call me friends. But they charge way way way too much for me to give them a 5-star rating despite the beautiful old style campus that I have spent a lot of time on. I come here almost every time I'm in Syracuse and probably know this campus as well as some of the graduates do. And I know the back alleys pretty well too. If you know what I mean. I give it a 3 because I have so much fun here, but they'll need to sort out the right wing extremism for me to go up to 5. read more

We were here to watch a soccer tournament, so we only saw that part of the university other than driving around it . Soccer tournament were free to watch, it was pretty fun. 100% recommend. You could also bring your own seats and sit in the hill area if you didn't want to seat in the bleachers. Also met the Orange! read more

Whenever I visit a new city, I love to check out a local college campus. Lots of colleges are beautiful and it makes me reminisce about my own college days. I spent one day in Syracus and had to check out Syracuse University. I visited quite a few colleges on my road trip and Syracuse was my favorite. I knew I wanted to see the basketball stadium as Syracuse is known for their basketball program. The interior was locked so the best I could do was see it from the outside and peer through the windows. After the stadium, I discovered that there is so much to see on this campus. The heart of campus is absolutely stunning. Large architecturally impressive buildings, well maintained lawns, lots of greenery . . . really everything you want in a college campus. Definitely seems like a fun school to attend! read more

My son is interested in Syracuse...and I'm really not interested in paying the tuition at Syracuse. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect at this school, but I'd heard good things. The admissions office did an excellent job with the information session and the tour was fantastic. If my son were able to get a big enough scholarship this would be a good place for him...so we'll see. Seriously, the campus is great and the program he wants to major in is one of the best in the country so it will be up to admissions next year. read more

This is another beautiful American College campus and I just visited as a tourist and really enjoyed the experience. It's a fairly large campus with lots of neat older buildings to enjoy and beautiful landscaping throughout. The campus is located in a neat little college town to explore and is about 10 minutes from downtown Syracuse. The campus has a beautiful quad with large walking paths and streets throughout. I would like to explore more of the buildings but due to Covid most are restricted or closed outright, maybe next time! read more

SU Basketball game vs Drexel was close and exciting. Gotta admit it seems strange to see Jim Boeheim in sports gear and not a suit and tie. The new dome is very nice the sound carries much better with less echoing. Would be nice if all the seats were cushioned, but hey it's a great experience no matter what. Buddy and Joe Boeheim both playing is something to watch. Both are excellent players and the team carries a great team effort to the basket and on the rebound. read more

Beautiful campus with a rich history and phenomenal faculty and staff. Came here on a campus visit and was impressed by everyone and all of the elements of campus that we got to see. The Dome is massive - bigger than anticipated- and the facilities everywhere were a mix of old and new with some impressive updates including a wellness center that's included with tuition. We had a great tour which started at the alumni center and we were surprised that we were known and recognized. The tour guides do a great job of providing info and keeping you engaged. After our tour we went to Newhouse which is seriously impressive in every way. This school is top notch at what they do and their student ambassadors clearly know and love their school and programs. I can't say enough about how impressed I was or how prepared I believe their students are upon graduation. We dined on campus at Ernie and that was an experience that took me back. Every one of the staff that we interacted with were helpful and pleasant. We had the good luck of sitting next to the kitchen manager (who was on break) and who brought the director over to talk food allergies and accommodations. This facility goes above and beyond for its students. I have been to several dining halls and talked to many different staff about how things are done on other campuses - Syracuse is advanced in how they approach students with these issues and I would feel very safe and happy here if I was attending and had these dietary concerns. Overall, besides the snow which I don't like, I was a huge fan of this campus and I also appreciated their heated walkways and snow clearing. read more

I am a student from Lehigh University and spent four days in Syracuse during the thanksgiving break. I lived in my friend's dorm, which is located in the south campus. The room is commodious with good privacy. The campus center contains many advanced facilities and offers a nice dining hall. The free campus bus system provides a safe and convenient environment for students to move around the campus. The main campus place is STUPENDOUS! Princely buildings, amazing landscapes and friendly stuffs. I would like to visit Syracuse again if I have the change in the future. I have had many wonderful experiences and memories here and can't wait to share those to my friends in Lehigh. Highly recommend visiting Syracuse University, what a magical place! read more

The university has a lit charm. A lot red brick buildings mixed with modern buildings. The campus buildings were easily laid out by side walks making for easy connections. The staff at the bookstore were very friendly and helpful. For me walking around campus made me desire to be a student again. But I am too old to start a doctorate program. read more

Syracuse University is an undergraduate's wet dream. Just make sure to have that dream either before November or after April because it might just be a frozen one. As an alumnus I can say I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. A few guidelines though to help you survive: 1. You must like snow! 2. You probably should get used to drinking on a regular basis (I had one psych professor acknowledge that b/c there is nothing to do up there in the cold most people turned to the sauce). 3. Don't wear anything they give you at freshman orientation, especially that lanyard thing. Otherwise you will be harassed by upperclassmen and it won't be because you arrived to class on time in the new outfits your mommy just bought for you. 4. Invest in sweatpants. And sweatshirts. And a Northface (if you want to fit in get a black one). Girls, you must get some Uggs and black juicy pants and a jean skirt. And wear them in such a horrendous combination. I digress. 5. Go downtown once in awhile. There are some great bars in Armory Square. 6. M-Street is the place to be. Watch out for Operation Prevent if you are underage. While I was there 3 bars closed for continuous underage drinking. Don't let this happen to you! 7. Even though the Football team currently sucks, attend A game. Just ONE, at least once while you are there. Same goes for Basketball and Lacrosse. 8. You can find the bar scene inside of Bird Library on the first floor talking smack about that hoe they saw passed out by the dumpster last night during midterms and finals. If you actually WANT to study, hit the 4th or 5th floor. 9. Dining Hall food is no good. I hope you still aren't required to eat there for 2 years anymore. A nice alternative is to use your campus bucks at south campus (if you can get a ride). They actually serve the good stuff to the athletes. 10. There actually are some things to do outside of campus: Finger Lake Wine Tours, Greek Peak and others for skiing/boarding, Turning Stone Casino, and the Fairgrounds to name a few. 11. Best pizza place is Dorians, in my opinion. And Sabastino's delivers. What do they deliver you ask? Anything..pizza, beer, kegs, cigarettes, etc... 12. Stay away from Thorndon Park, unless of course it is daylight and you are in a group. If you haven't noticed already 'cuse is in surrounded by the G-H-E-T-T-O. 13. The Daily Orange (D.O.) has a crossword and sudoku, perfect to distract you from that annoying professor your parents are second mortgaging their house to pay for. Make sure you learn to fold it into a perfect rectangle and hide it behind your notebook so the prof or TA can't spy it. And... 14. Go play in the snow! But when it melts and the girls come out to tan in bikinis and jump on trampolines you will know you made the right choice. And you ask: If I could do it all again would I? Hell yes. read more

This is all second hand. My older son just graduated with a Master's degree. Disarray may best describe it. Online courses that were terrible. Physics classes taught by chemistry post docs. Two-course subjects where they only taught the first course. He's still battling to get his degree correctly issued. Ugh. His fellow grad students from other schools were also appalled by the lack of continuity and overall lack of focus. It seems to start with the administration. The communications program is supposed to be top flight, but I worry about the sciences. They have a good basketball program, but they had to cheat to have it. It probably says all you need to know about the school. Look elsewhere even though some of the faculty is outstanding. There are many better options. The weather - terrible, though the budding El Nino should help in the 2015/16 school year as Northeast may be dryer than the last two years. read more

My son graduated from Syracuse. I know tuition is expensive but you get what you pay for. I truly believe that when it comes to College education. Especially if you don't want to work in the city of Syracuse. Our son wanted to work in NYC, Chicago or Denver. He got interviews and ended up getting a job in Denver, 3 months after he graduated. Employers know the school name. There is no doubt as a student you will work hard and to get a 3.5 requires a lot of hard work. Our son went to the Whitman School of Business. I am amazed at how smart he became while attending college. Syracuse does a great job to get the student ready for the real world. As for the size. My son said to me, you can make a big school seem small, but you can't make a small school big. So true. He joined ski club and organized a dog playgroup which introduced him to many friends. There is so much to offer. Plus the basketball games are a lot of fun. Lots of school spirit. If you go to Syracuse University you will graduate with an excellent education, a leg up when looking for a job based on the schools reputation and the alumni community is strong. While at Syracuse, you will work hard. But it is totally worth the reward of being one of the many Alumni. read more

If you're reading this as a high school senior trying to decide where to go to school, I would like you to note how weather-dependent the reviews are and to keep in mind that when people say, "you must like snow" they mean it. It's literally the worst weather ever. One guy, a film major, told me they shot the 'snow planet' scene from Star Wars in Syracuse. (If you wikipedia "Hoth" it contradicts this but the point is, everyone he told that to didn't question him ! ). Another thing you need to understand is that when people say "Winter" in Syracuse that covers from October to May. It always snows before Halloween and one of the biggest snow storms I experienced was on Mother's Day. The "4 Beautiful Seasons" everyone talks about are a bit of an exaggeration as the 8 months of winter I just described takes up most of the year. Summers (if you have the 'pleasure' to experience) are hot and humid; think Hawaii but substitute tropical misty rain, beautiful beaches and fruity drinks with mammoth mosquitoes, one of the most polluted lake in a America (wikipedia confirms that) and an Indian casino only 3 exits (or 45minutes) down the through-way (ie Toll Road). The two weeks of fall and two weeks of spring usually occur the weeks you're getting to school (which make moving in fun) and the weeks you are FINALLY getting ready to go home. While the weather understands the positive affects of pleasantries and how a nice fall "hello" and spring "goodbye" can do a lot to make you forget about the months you had to spend going from building to building in tunnels so your face doesn't freeze off, the general population of Syracuse didn't seem to believe in such things. I always said Syracuse was a pretty cold place, literally and figuratively. The winters force people inside where great bonds between friends can form while you are in your basement trying not to freeze to death. The problem is that you can only fit so many people into a room and those "bonds" usually form amongst small groups of people and the day to day interactions of the student body is lacking. If, by some miracle, there is a nice day (above 50 degrees) before June you will see what I'm talking about. All of a sudden, thousands of students descend upon the quad in a hacky-sack/ultimate Frisbee bi-athalon. Its quite amazing and for a day or maybe two, you're on a normal college campus where people look up, smile and may even say "Hi" to each other. That lasts until the next snow storm and out come the north face jackets and hoods and its back to looking at the ground so you don't slip on ice or step in slush. I also am a heavy believer that school is what you make it. The facilities at Syracuse are one where you can get a great education. However, almost EVERYTHING requires a great deal of red tape and its extremely easy to slip through the cracks if that's what you want to do. I don't remember my adviser's name but do recall being super irritated when I couldn't register because I didn't have a form filled out that she had to sign. On the other hand my roommate still has a very close relationship with his advisor from SU. I will say this: there is almost ZERO interaction between the different colleges at SU. The engineers and architecture students are banished underground all year to their super projects. The Visual and Performing artists perfect their skills on their own. There is some interaction between the S.O.M. and the College of Arts and Sciences. And last I heard, the Newhouse School of Communication was receding from Syracuse and has petitioned to join the Ivy League as its own institution. (I kid... but seriously, the NH kids take their program's pride a little too far - you pretty much need backstage passes to get into any of their buildings or work areas). The ESFers (not technically part of Syracuse but part of the SUNY school) were my personal favorite. They make up a good percentage of the Ultimate Frisbee crowd and will be seen hugging trees more then they will be seen in class. The sports programs were a big draw for me. I was a recruited athlete (rowing) and using the same facilities that Donavan McNabb, Marvin Harrison and Derrik Coleman used was very appealing. While the surrounding town does revolve around SU sports, the football program has been going down hill since McNabb left (I got the pleasure of seeing Troy Nunes run backwards for 3 years). The Carrier Dome (home to both football and basketball) is not the best place to watch a basketball game. Like I said before, if you put your face in to the books, you can leave Syracuse a scholar. As far as quality of life, I would say almost every aspect of it can be improved by going elsewhere. Best 4 years of my life...won't knock off a star because it's cold...just prepare for it and you'll be fine. Great education, definitely a work hard, play hard school. Tuition is up there, but i believe it was worth it. Great social life whether you go Greek or not. Great restaurants on and off campus. Everything is about a 15 minute drive from campus. If you live up at Day or Flint, prepare for walking up and down 127 stairs just to get to the dorms at least twice every day. The campus is absolutely beautiful as well. read more

Please believe me when i say if you are looking to transfer or are a high school senior to STAY AWAY from this school. Overall the school is fun don't get me wrong and i have met some of the best people of my life. However the tuition is outrageous for the academics. The staff are unprofessional especially the social work department and the dean of that department. The atmosphere is good but the professors treat you like you are just a number. Please go to another school there are much more schools out there with quality education for much less and better professors. read more

Okay, this is the actual review for the University. I attended this beautiful school for a year and had a blast. There was this "microburst" that we all thought was a tornado that hit the campus pretty hard. We all ran to the basement, hoping and praying the building would not collapse. The cafeteria windows rattled and broke from the strong winds. Scary first semester. Having fire drills in the middle of a snowy night was not fun--especially right in the middle of a night shower. The Quad is very frisbee friendly, the buildings are gorgeous (except for our College of Engineering and Comp Sci building--Link Hall). Did you guys know that the original Syracuse school colors were pink and watermelon green? They changed it to orange, with the blue as a complement color. Also, Vanessa Williams, Don McNabb, Carmelo Anthony--these famous people attended this school! Overall I was happy with my edumacation at this school. It's private though, so it got a bit pricey. They have one of the best Broadasting program in the country, very good law school, the computer science/engineering program is very kickass (they get a lot of recruitment from IBM, Lockhead Martin, Welch Allyn, etc.). read more

I must elaborate on a few things I read in the proceeding review. Consdering I am from the area, I may be able to give you all a little more of a 'To Do List' 1) Yes, you deffinatly have to like snow. Unlike places like Connecticut, here we get several FEET of snow instead of inches. 2) There is TONS to do in the snow! Sledding down Wescott Hill in Solvay, Ice Skating in Armory Square, and so much more! Although most of the fun you are going to have to travel for. 3) The local bar scene is awsome! I suggest greatly that you visit Downtown for some great fun! Local bars however hold just as much fun and adventures. For those who like cheap entertainment and a good laugh at another's exspence, I suggest Singers in Solvay, a popular local kareoke joint. The Jukebox in Syracuse, or as some may call it the 'G-H-E-T-T-O', always promises a great time. 4) Although Syracuse may look very intimidating, there is no reason to fear it. Like all cities, of course there is going to be some low income housing and such, yet the crime rate is by far nothing to be concerned about. It's no Hartford, that's for sure. 5) You haven't lived until you've eaten at the Dinosaur BBQ. A popular biker hang out that serves some of the best pulled pork around. RANDOM FACT:: Law and Order was going to shoot an episode at the Dino but was refused allowance to film there. 6) Sports are MAJOR! Even though we are currently at a down fall in that arena, Syracuse Fans are some of the funnest! My advise is to take in a game and enjoy 'Crunch Madness' - Hockey fans are a R I O T!!!! 7) There is TONS of interesting things to do; Take in the Everson and Erie Canal musems; Go to the Adirondaks; Visit the Turning Stone Casino and Resort - But don't forget to take a walk around Carousel Center, soon to be the largest mall in America {Destiny USA} 8) It get's bitterly cold, and when I say that, I mean it in the nicest terms. Winter atire is a MUST. 2 shirts a sweat shirt and a winter coat if you decide to venture outside - Take it from a frost bite survivor. 9) Summertime is always a great time! Party in the Plaza starts up along with celebrations like "Juneteenth; Tatste of Syracuse and many MANY more! It's always a party and if you don't mind going into the Ghetto, Block parties are a dime a dozen all across Syracuse! 10) Summer also prooves to do great things for 'the Hill' {what we Cuse towners call the campus and the surrounding area} Just remember not to get too distructful or you'll catch your mug on the 11 O'Clock news. 11) Fourth of July is best spent at Sylvan Beach amusement park - DEFFINATLY! It's a beach, park, Amusement Park and has a long strip of shops; bars and grills; and of course - MORE BARS. 12) Although Sabatino's delivers - Uncle Chubby's on the North Side of Syracuse ALSO delivers and has great pizza. Might I also suggest Oompas on Tipp Hill for those who have an appitie after 2 am. 13) Aint no St. Patricks day party like the one that goes on every year in Tipp Hill - Just a stones throw away from Burnet Park Zoo. The weekend is usually spent in the streets, drinking Green Beer at Colemans and singing real Irish Tunes. Yet of course, remember to wear green seems it's a prodominatly Irish community. 14) You HAVE to get your picture taken with the stone throwers statue in Tipp Hill, It's like a peice of history. 15) And remember, the hoe's and skanks you pick up at the bar DO NOT REFLECT ON THE CITY IT SELF. Just because you caught crabs from the stripper you brought home from Lookers doesn't mean Syracuse did it to her. read more

I went here last semester. It is an absolutely gorgeous campus when the weather is good. It gets really harsh winters that last most of the semester. It is also incredibly expensive, the reason I am not there this semester. It is going to go over $50,000 a year for next semester. It really is in the middle of nowhere. If you want a metropolitan city then this isn't it. If you don't enjoy frat parties then you are going to be out of luck. The basketball team is amazing as well as the lacrosse. Unfortunately they don't have an NCAA baseball team. It is all about what you make of it. Newhouse is a fantastic communications school but its nearly impossible to get in. It is filled with rich Long Beach kids who drive around in their Mercedes and wear True Religion. All in all I would return but only if they offered me more financial aid, seeing as it is way to expensive for anyone to afford in this economy. read more

I went to school there. Very friendly place. I keep in touch with many of my faculty and classmates still even though I graduated many years ago. Campus is pretty. The city is down the hill and you probably won't have much to do with it- except go out to dinner when your parents come to town. Having a car is great because upstate New York Is close and is amazingly beautiful if you like the outdoors. If you ski, the winters won't be bad. Summers are awesome and the university golf course is great! The school brings great concerts to the Dome. Many intellectual type things all around campus. Frat parties and bars next to campus dominate the social scene. Basketball and lacrosse are king. Many colleges are nearby for more fun. Academics were great! Getting a class was not a problem with the exception of wine tasting which I got locked out of my senior year. I took horseback riding and skiing several semesters to meet my physical ed requirement. The library was a great place to study. There are many great colleges out there. This is certainly one of them. No regrets about going to Syracuse! It got me into a top medical school without difficulty! read more
