It's…read moreunassuming and inviting from the outside, with a couple of table and chairs outside for sunnier days, and modern but homely on the inside. With lots of exposed brick and coffee coloured walls it's nice and clean and inviting without being intimidating. It sits in steep contrast to it's surroundings, but that shouldn't put anyone off from taking a step inside. Coffee and food. Two of the simple things in life that are often beautiful leisure time indulgences that so so many people seem to get horribly wrong. I am happy to report that Cafe Lento is not one of them. The coffee is fairtrade, this will be impressed upon you whilst you cogitate what to order, it's all fairtrade. Lovely. But who's is it and how does it taste. It's Lavazza Tiera, not my particular favourite brand of coffee, but it packs a nice smooth punch so fair enough. They do well with what they have, and offer a good range of hot beverages, with large latte's at £2.30 and Americano's at the good price of £1.50, amongst others. Cold drinks for sunny days are also available, adding a shot of espresso to one of their milkshakes is a lovely way to waste some time over a good book outside. If your belly is rumbling, then unlike Starbucks and Costa and Nero and all those others, Lento offers food beyond the panini, there's soup and a roll, Greek salads, jacket potatoes, hot sarnies, cold sarnies, and the saving grace the full English breakfast. The only thing missing from the full English is a nice side of black pudding, but that could be my Mancunian routes shining through. £5.50 for juice, sausage, egg, bacon, beans, tomato, mushrooms, bread and butter, it's definitely a feast worth the indulgence.

On my first visit, I wasn't sure whether it was table service or I was supposed to go up to the counter to order. When I asked, the lovely chap behind the counter merely replied, "Whichever you'd prefer!" The menu is classic café food: hot and cold sandwiches, full english breakfasts, baked potatoes etc. They have a cabinet full of homemade cakes at the counter and a good variety of hot & cold drinks. All very reasonably priced as well. In theory, it sounds like nothing different to many other cafés, but there's just something special about this place in my opinion. Everyone else there seems to be regulars, people who pop in for the atmosphere and to wile away a few hours, have a chat with the owner or read a book in the corner. It just feels like a really nice getaway from the hubbub of Headingley and it's easy to lose track of time. But at no point do you feel a glare from any of the staff implying you've been there too long nursing your cup of tea and/or using their free wifi. In fact, the warm friendly demeanour of the staff is probably the biggest factor as to why it has such a lovely atmosphere in there. There's seating outside too, if you're lucky enough to visit on a day when the weather is behaving itself, and live music now & again though I haven't experienced that myself yet. Oh, and though it's small, there's a lot of seating and it can fit more in than you realise - on my last visit, the entirety of Leeds Rhinos seemed to be getting coffee in there and there was still plenty of room for a friend & I to tuck into delicious generously-filled bacon sandwiches!

We popped in here before a concert at the Town Hall, seeking out something quick to sate the hunger, before finding somewhere to dine proper post-gig. After a bit of a search, we decided to grab something here, and perused the range of deli platters they have. My company was vegetarian, which is no bother for me, so we opted for the veggie plate as it had cheese on it too. (I do love a bit of cheese.) The last thing I expected was to taste the most deliciously fresh platter I've ever had in Leeds. I can't even begin to tell you how tasty the sun dried tomatoes and olives were. The houmous, freshly made, was particularly flavoursome, the cheese pieces were delectable, the salad was amazingly dressed in a mustard vinaigrette, and the quiche, that accompanied the little dishes, was divine. Every mouthful was fantastic, and I almost regretted not staying here for two more of the same and sacking off the gig. Truly, it was delicious. The chap who served us was great in advising on time (we were cutting it fine) and the ambience, as ever, was perfectly relaxed. With plenty of happy faces, a brilliant selection of ales, delicious bites and wonderful staff, this has to be a top stop off in Leeds. I will be back for more eats! **Extra note - popped in on the Yelp ale trail, and they've some lovely beers. The Fernandez Brewery Tap Vanilla Porter is extra special. Even on a busy night the staff were grand and the vibe was lovely - in spite of the snow!

After a wait that was decidedly too long, our food finally arrived. After such a long wait I was famished so I dug in eagerly, only to discover that my fish pie was cold in the middle and lukewarm on the outside! When I told the waitress, she was very apologetic; I chose the chicken pie as a replacement. After yet another wait, I was beginning to think that maybe the Donner Party wasn't all that far wrong ;-) Just in the nick of time, my chicken pie arrived. Despite how hungry I was, it seemed to me to be mediocre at best. On the upside, my friend reported that her fish and chips were very good, and the chips that came with my chicken pie were also good.

The kind where you probably tried to dance on a table, the kind where you definitely felt as though your neck was broken the next day from head banging, the kind where you almost certainly meet a squadron on new best friends because you're having that good a time. (And it's as much to do with the awesome clientele, as the drunkenness, I can tell you.) So, yes. Go to Sandinista for drinks. I know, it's always busy on a weekend. But once you get in there you'll have an amazing time, I'm certain of it. The music policy includes all the classics, something to suit most tastes, without venturing down the processed pop route in any shape or form. They also have regular live music, I believe, which is also commendable. However, you mightn't have noticed, they also serve food. What's that? Yes. Where have you been?! (That question is mostly directed at my own foolish self.) They serve the most excellent tapas. Of course, you can go down the route of fajitas, and such like, but on this occasion I wanted a range of foods to stuff. Oh my word. So, firstly, a special mention must be made of the mushrooms in peppercorn sauce. They were absolutely flipping divine - perfectly cooked, soaked in flavour, and the sauce was out of this world. The meatballs were also fabulous, with a delicious tomato sauce, and the garlic bread was beautiful. The crispy pork belly was wonderful, and came with an amazing apricot (?) compote (?!). The patatas were also addictively tasty, especially with melted cheese and spring onion. Of course, the service was fantastic, as ever, but the discovery that there's yet another place to eat fantastically made, freshly cooked, delicious bites is the thing I'll be shouting about for the moment. Dishes come in around £4, which makes it incredibly affordable to try a few different things, and perhaps even splash out on one of their yummy cocktails. Of course, there's the danger that you'd go for tea and not quite make it out until 4am, but hey -it wouldn't be such a bad thing would it? In fact, top idea Batman, Sherlock and Brian Cox, you geniuses. Even the door signage says, "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." Of course, I'm thinking The Eagles must have been to Leeds. And, given half the chance, I'd say this to be true. I checked-in, but my mind clearly hasn't left them yet. Nom.

After many a moon of folks telling me this off-the-beaten-track…read moregem is worth seeking out, opportunity knocked this Tuesday when a friend chose to have her birthday meal here. I have to admit, as soon as I saw the location I was delighted. It's no more than a 15 minute walk or so from Hyde Park, so easily navigate-able, and stands proudly on the corner. Once you get inside the warmth of the place (literally) and the staff greet you immediately. We were something like 20 strong, and had to wait for a table to finish before we could sit, so stood a bit awkwardly in the entrance - not that it was CC's fault, but as a group there's not quite room in the waiting area. I've heard that in times gone by they'd send folks over to the pub across the road in that kind of scenario, but that has been turned into a Tesco Metro. Sad times. We didn't wait long though, and soon enough piled into our seats. The waitresses kept us well watered with water and drinks orders throughout the night, which was a great touch. I wasn't boozing so particularly appreciated fresh water being replenished without having to ask. As we were a big group, the put on a set meal for that, and so first came a selection of dips and poppadoms. I wasn't a huge fan of the yoghurt dips, as they were a bit tart, but that's just me - everyone else adored them. As well as regular poppadoms we also had cumin seed ones. Next up came starters, which consisted of various battered delicious bites, and some minced lamb kebab type bits of meat, and tikka chicken pieces. All of those were excellent. In particular I liked the battered potato and tikka chicken - it was cooked to perfection and not in the least bit dry. Lastly came the mains. We had a selection of about 10 different dishes, maybe more, and all dived in. You guys, these were the kiddy. This was the one. So, in the end I only tried a few dishes before feeling utterly stuffed, but I had a lamb and mushroom dish, medium spiced, in a red (tomato?) sauce. A chicken and mushroom, which wasn't quite a korma, but had a delicious flavour and cream based sauce. Those two were the stand out for me, but we had all kinds of veggie, spicy, and other going on. Not a bite was disappointing. All freshly made. And the naan?! Sugary! I can't tell you how much this made sense once you mixed it with the curry. Just trust me and go with it. Basically, I've found a new favourite in this family restaurant. Why not five stars? Well, I've only been once, so ought to go again just to be sure. But every bit of this is fantastic. It's not fancy, but it's cosy, the staff are amongst the friendliest I've experienced in Leeds, and the food is exquisite. Oh - and the price? £15/head for that banquet!

We went along for a banquet option, and although I could almost say we started off with the usual poppadoms & pickles this wouldn't actually be true! The poppadoms were made with lentil flour so were totally Gluten Free and tasted delicious! Following this we were served with a very generous mixed starter including onion bhaji, mushroom and potato pakoras, shami kebab & chicken tikka - all tasting amazing! Then onto the mains, as much of a squeeze as it was to find room for them, we had a wide selection of different curry dishes (with my personal favourite of chicken & mushroom) and the lamb dish was cooked to perfection. Not only was the food impressive, but the personal attention from Kate when we arrived and the friendly waiting staff all made the meal really enjoyable.. and finally rounded off by a visit from the chef & co owner Karim dropped by the tables for a chat. I'll be back here as often as I can!

I wasn't sure how I could beat my last trip there, or the 5000 trips before it, but tonight has been a blast... Let me paint you a picture (with my words of course).. As its my other half's birthday tomorrow, a few days ago I got a special offer through the post for a huge 25% off our bill, and a free bottle of house wine, clearly to encourage me to spend the her birthday there and reward me for my previous custom - but as its one of our favorite restaurants - lets just say we don't need much convincing! So we pulled up at about 5pm on a gorgeous Friday evening (tonight!) only to see the car park packed and wondered would we get seated - we goes in, and bless the girls that seated us, actually thought about where we were going to be sitting, and popped us on a table away from the other families in there with children (not that I have anything against kids at all!), but she recognized we were a couple having a meal together - so thoughtful and showed she thought about it! We sat on a table that wasn't on top of other ones and got down to ordering our food - oh and getting our complimentary bottle of wine - deeeelish!! Hmmmm, droool, the food... Chicken livers for the wife and duck spring rolls for me to start - crispy rolls, filled with duck and on an amazing sweet chilli sauce, she had livers that were meaty, cooked to perfection and almost melt in the mouth - in fact I am drooling AGAIN thinking about it now! Mains were fishcake for me, and slow roasted lamb with some ribboned pasta that has a name but I cant remember or spell it - anyway it was GAWGUS - meaty lamb, no fat, pasta cooked to perfection - oh my word I could go on but wont... Cos I will end up soaking the laptop... Service wise, very attentive, talking to us whilst taking our order but certainly not intrusive at all, knew there was a birthday when I had handed over the voucher for the free wine - I'll do anything for a free wine! - and took a real interest, asking whose birthday it was and wishing her a good un! I though this in itself was lovely but imagine my surprise when at the end of the meal the staff brought out an ice cream with a giant sparkler in it and sang Happy Birthday for her - aw it was a lovely touch and to be honest really made our night... I love this place and although people find it slightly more expensive, I don't, and I'm certainly not one to spend money without thinking about it. Its a complete you get more than what you pay for place, and for an evening meal like this I would have paid double - definitely a place to go!
