It's stalls like this that make a wander through the market such an enjoyable experience as you get a real sense of the history and character of the place. The stall has a traditional bakery counter displaying bread rolls and tasty looking cakes - I'd definitely spend my pennies here rather than at the Greggs in the lower section of the market (rather cheeky I feel - opening a chain store, of which there are already more than ten in Leeds, in a market populated by independent retailers, many just getting by. And I'm sad to see market customers queuing in droves to get their Greggs pastry fix when they could support an independent bakery selling very affordable sandwiches and other baked goods a short walk away. Bracketed rant over. ) They also have a range of pre-packaged brand name bread - a little odd when they bake their own. Their cake making display is a real treat to browse, with many a creatively-iced cake that any kid would be overjoyed to see candle-lit on their birthday. They also make wedding cakes with three working days notice. Great for a spontaneous wedding party, couples who haven't been particularly organised or when previous wedding-cake plans fall through. As Amelia mentioned, they offer egg-free cakes, but do they do vegan? As they have considered those who don't eat egg I think it likely they could stretch to include vegans...so it'd be worth asking if you're looking for a vegan cake-making service.

All cakes have to be ordered but can be made within three working days - pretty good if you consider the quality of decoration. The plastic-covered Warbotun loaves seem strangely placed next to these and the floury baps and loaves also on offer but I guess that's what you find in a market like this - peculiar variety.

A former vegetarian myself, I understand the convenience of having somewhere like Out Of This World to rely on in a city centre. It means being able to purchase items which are sometimes not even stocked in the larger supermarkets, to maintain a balanced diet without being forced to use unwanted substitutions. Too well stocked to be a health food shop, Out Of This World falls into the category of health food supermarket. There is a huge range of the usual nuts, seeds and pulses; but also a surprising number of Traidcraft toiletries, recycled stationary, hair dye and household cleaning products. Alongside fairly traded tea and coffee, vitamins, supplements and natural remedies, the store also caters for sufferers of restrictive diets. There is a varied selection of groceries for people who have to omit gluten, wheat and diary from their nutritional intake, and a large number of vegetarian and vegan ready meals. One reason why I particularly like Out Of This World, is because they stock Samuel Smith ale and lager. A real favourite with my Other Half and I, they provide us with a constant hoard. Bondgate Bakery in Otley supply the store with freshly baked loaves and buns, with gluten and wheat free alternatives available. A deli counter offers freshly made quiches, samosas and wraps - a handy lunch or a lazy supper. The staff are very approachable and were more than happy to assist me in finding a difficult item for a family member. What I mean by that, is my Gran was looking for bee pollen, because the lothario that she listens to on her local radio station had been praising its medical benefits. Any shop that can help me in my quest for bee pollen, has earned respect in my eyes.

A lot of places have changed in what feels like a very small space of time, but not Out Of This World. I used to come here on Saturdays to purchase their organic milk and elderflower cordial for the bar that I worked at on Call Lane. It was always handy to stock up in case anyone wanted a White Russian, but really it was mostly to supply my need for coffee. Also, there is nothing quite as refreshing as elderflower cordial and lemonade. Seriously, it used to be my favourite drink. I love the smell when you walk in to this shop. It's not exclusive, it's that same smell most organic shops have, but it is lovely. The smell of good. Only goodness. Nothing in here can really be bad for you. At least, that's what we can believe until we learn otherwise! Within you will find, as well as hoards of organic foods, all sorts of enviro-friendly cosmetics, cleaning products (for you and your clothes) and much more. It errs on the expensive side if you wanted to do your weekly shop here, but it is sure worth buying that elderflower cordial. Yum!

There's something addictively relaxing, inspiring, and ponderous about this delightful cafe,…read moresituated a stone's throw from the bus station of Leeds. Perhaps it's the creative types that inhabit the building, whose ebb and flow in and out of the place spark one's imagination, or perhaps it's the intrigue of the gallery next door. Either way, in this space, I feel as though I could spend the day writing, as the rest of the world speeds by on the busy road. If you're in the business of cakes, and eating particularly delicious ones, this place is where you set up shop. With most (if not all) being supplied by the eco-ethical cool local company That Old Chestnut, you can be assured you're in for a royal mouth treat. They're vegan, they're generously portioned, they're all about £2, and they're excellent. Yesterday I allowed myself to partake of a banana and chocolate loaf slice, and it was everything I desired, and more. Moist, flavoursome, chocolatey and with added nuts! I also had a few cups of the masala chai tea. Although I've forgotten the name of the tea brand, it was a fantastic cuppa, and perfectly reviving. The seating is varied, and plentiful for such a small space, so if you're lucky you can bag a squishy sofa. However, the plastic pawn seats are just as comfy, so grab a pew and get your thinking cap on. The music is ambient and unobtrusive, so there's no need to worry about loud chart distraction. It's a place to meet friends and catch up, it's a place to disappear into your own thoughts, it's a place to catch up on work poaching the free wifi, it's a place to delight in coffee, cake and tea. I hadn't time to test out the soup or sarnies, but I shall be back soon for more wifi antics and a deeper investigation as to the edibles -having been a fan of Bakery 164's sandwiches I'm sure they will not disappoint. Forgive me if I wax lyrical but as I sat in Cafe 164 I got the feeling that it was a place where…read morestories are made, deals done and beautiful people shake hands with life. It's such a comfortable place where not only did my latte and flapjack taste great but I could relax in the knowledge that they were ethical (I think). There are some very comfortable sofas (I gave up my chance to sit there as a largish group came in just behind me and I'm a nice, thoughtful guy) and I would very much like to settle down with a latte or two and a book for a long session of me time at some stage in the near future (they even have a bring one, take one book shelf). My only worry was that the ceiling looks a bit iffy and I had some chicken licken moments.

A franchise as homogenised as Gregg's really only needs reviewing if you've found a shoe in your…read morecoffee or something, but this recently opened branch is a slight departure from the norm - it has SEATS. No, I don't mean the kerb outside, or the pushchairs the teenagers bring in, but actual tables and chairs so that you can sit in and "enjoy" the Gregg's ambience. In fairness, it's much larger than a normal Gregg's and so where you're sat is well removed from the greasy end, and traffic levels mean the pasties are always hot, but the feel is still much more "Yo fella" than "Ciao bella". The unfamiliar layout does sometimes cause confusion and queuing chaos as they've separated pastie ordering and paying, but judging by the amount of people in this country who rely purely on Gregg's for their sustenance, that may introduce a useful level of natural selection back in to society. While there you can also check out the currently (but probably forever) fairly derelict Central Arcade. A new covered shopping mall designed to bring the "class and glamour" of Briggate out towards Kirkgate, it's probably done the opposite, but time will tell. At least now I can browse for hair extensions while chomping on a hot sausage and bean melt without having to walk all the way up to the Merrion Centre.

Subways have a time and a place (other mass produced retailers are available) but sometimes I just fancy something a touch different, quick and reasonably cheap. Bagel Nash fits the bill then. In a shocking development they specialise in, well ermmm, bagels but why not say on the tin what you intend to do. There are plenty of fresh fillings to take your pick from and as the norm these days choose your bagel of choice from the many baked and created bases. If you're feeling a tad naughty you can cake it up too and the coffee is more than satisfactory. You've got fair trade beans to keep you going and lattes of choice. It might not be the sexiest place ever known to man but there it certainly fills a spot for me. Quick, tasty and I'm ready for action. Just a word of warning though, if you manage to get the staff to smile I'll give you the money myself.

As the comment before me said, this is situated in Leeds city centre bus/coach station. I'd just…read moremissed my coach by seconds so had to wait an hour til my next one. Bakers Oven offers you the choice for an inside dine-in experience or a counter to the right of the shop which offers take-away food only, much likes Greggs. As I had an hour to waste and had no breakfast, I thought I'd go here for convenience. When you walk in, you have to queue in a line just before the til. The menu displayed on the wall is very basic, although nicely done. Their menu stated a 'Classic Breakfast' for approximately £3. As I didn't know what this was, I asked the cashier what consisted in their 'Classic Breakfast'. She had trouble reciting what was included and so asked for help of another colleague. She then proceeded to ask me what drink I wanted, assuming fresh orange would have been included in my breakfast, I proceeded and asked for that. She then told me my order came to £4 something. I reluctantly paid. Unfortunately, I can say that's the good part over. Now, time for the bad part. I had to find a seat, as either all tables were taken by one or more persons or any other remaining seats were cluttered with discarded plates and cups, many with food still left on. As I looked around I noticed there were SIX members of staff in the Bakers Oven. Two were on the take-away station, one was on the cash till and the remaining three were inside the kitchen, two of them were talking, laughing and stood around. The Bakers Oven only has a small dine-in area and whilst most tables could seat four people they were generally filled with one to two persons. As I sat down and waited for my breakfast, several customers who were also trying to sit down were having to move dirty plates and cups themselves, sometimes stockpiling them on an already over-cluttered table. When my breakfast did finally come out, the sausage was way over cooked, hard to say the least. The bacon was rubbery and the tomatoes were stone cold, maybe they serve them there like that. I walked out in disgust, and like many others, left the remains on my plate. I would urge others to avoid the dine-in section of Bakers Oven and proceed to Leeds Market place a stones throw away which hosts one or two nice, pleasant cafes.
