This is such a wonderful place where the proprietor was so warm and friendly and welcoming! We were seated next to the fireplace and had a nice fire during the entire meal - how cool was that? The service from the staff was second to none - always attentive and did not miss a beat. So about the food - it was amazingly delicious - we had: - Camembert salad - 8.5 UKL - beautifully presented - Pigeon breast with goat cheese - totally rich and salad was so fresh 7.5 UKL - Devon Crab Thermidore - again, totally delicious and well presented 18.95 UKL - Blackboard special chicken pie - done to perfection - AWESOME - (dont remember the price as it was a blackboard special) This place is way out in the country and has such beautiful scenery and friendly people. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful pub!

I took the vicar to lunch there on a wet Palm Sunday and found it a charming place, simply furnished and with a welcoming open fire. The original small public and saloon bars have been opened up so that the pub now consists of one large L-shaped room, one wing of which is at a lower level. Being a Sunday, the menu was short - basically roast beef, pork or chicken with all the trimmings. Our Gloucester Old Spot pork with cream mustard sauce came commendably quickly and was delicious, with ample crackling, a tasty Yorkshire pudding and superb roast potatoes. There were no less than five additional vegetables, including red cabbage and parsnips, all fitted comfortably on a large square plate. Slices of crusty brown bread were served automatically, all for £16.95 each. Puddings were apple crumble, bread and butter and brownies, all with cream. We failed to tackle any of them. The wine list is short and we allowed Anna, (who with the chef, Adam Cordery are the proprieters) to recommend an excellent Rioja at £17. No service charge was added to the bill, which I find a little tiresome as you the have to calculate it, but the service itself from Anna and her team of two young girls was exemplary, and the pub was full.

We stopped in after a bracing coastal walk for some lunch and the food is excellent. Decent portions, a varied menu plus daily specials, welcoming and friendly staff. Dog friendly too. Sunday lunch was cold so ordered new but was reheated instead. Gravy good but rest was an abomination. Potatoes were not roast and had never seen an oven. Veg was blanched and needed a stake knife to cut. Chicken was yesterdays leftovers and was very tough. I am sad, for many yrs it was my local pub. Ordered a doggy bag but food made dog ill. Asked to pay 7% service charge; NO WAY.

Plat's du jour are mainly off the main menu, which defeats the object. A recent lunch had salmon fishcake with a poached egg, and mustard sauce (which was ok but nothing special, and the egg was cold); a spicy warm butternut squash and lentil salad which was acceptable, but barely tepid, and a dry and bitty mushroom risotto. The wine list seems to lack wine by the glass or house wines, and is generally very pricey. A Californian Viognier was pleasant, but dear. All round, to be honest, a disappointment. Food at the HdV chain in the past has been very good, and this wasn't. Service was friendly enough. There is outside space for warm weather.

It was a very busy Thursday night, with a pub quiz going on, some of the locals were pleasant enough, but we did experience some hostility from what appeared to be a few very inebriated fold. In fairness, partner's lasagne was described as "best pub lasagne I've ever had". The steak, chips & trimmings all tasted tainted/slightly ? metallic so perhaps they were using stale old oil/dont ever clean the equipment: who knows. I didnt finish the meal as I was worried (justifably as it turned out) about consequences.

We ate as a large group on a Friday evening when the pub was generally full of people on nights out. As a place to eat I would suggest that the cow is better placed as somewhere for lunch, not dinner and especially not dinner on a Friday night. My starter of black pudding with bubble and squeak bacon and a poached egg was delicious. However my main course of fish pie was poorly presented and the accompanying vegetables were soft and the portion was small. The pie itself was tasty but the whole experience was let down by the poor presentation. The meals of others in my party looked good, especially burgers and steaks - if I go back I'll be sticking to those.

My husband had the steak and ale pie, and I had the summer salad which included chicken and scampi in sweet chili sauce. Both dishes were absolutely outstanding, and we've been traveling for more than a week in England and have been to England before. Had to be right up at the top if not the top meal we've had in England! On top of that, we were late to an attraction, and as we walked down the street after leaving the pub, the owner Mark pulled up alongside of us and insisted on giving us a ride to the ferry so we'd have plenty of time to see Osborne House! Of course we came back and visited a couple of additional times, and were never disappointed by the coffee, the Ale, the food, or the company. We would highly recommend this pub to all comers!
