Monday-Saturday you can get the following for a fiver if you dine with another (two-fer-a-tenner deal). Outstanding gammon dinner with two eggs, chips and peas. It's a good-sized hunk o' ham; grilled to perfection with near-crackling-quality edges, plenty of chips; fresh-tasting peas (mushy optional). And did I mention the two eggs on top? For the other half of the deal the wife likes the scampi or the chicken: and it's half a chicken, rotisserie style, juicy and gorgeous with no gastro-nonsense pretence. On a Sunday the roasts are outstanding: deliciously cooked meat on plentifully apportioned plates loaded with veg for under six quid (Dec 2010). The Sandpiper is best deal I know for Sunday roast on the Solent.

I came here last week for a wedding and it was such a cool little hotel/wedding…read morevenue/pub/restaurant/bar! The wedding ceremony actually took place in the Pavilion across the road from the Hotel and was decorated very nicely. The rest of the wedding such as the meal and the reception took place in a little outbuilding attached to the main hotel called the Priory. The food was okay at the wedding however the service was very good. There were a few guests on our table who didn't drink alcohol so they bought around some alternative drinks for them and apologised for offering them alcohol. We also opted to stay for the night and our room was amazing! High ceilings, a lovely large bathroom, very comfortable bed. It was a shame that we were only staying for a night! Breakfast was included with the room as well and it was very pleasant. They had a menu of cooked breakfasts which you order with the waiter and a continental breakfast buffet such as croissants, jam, toast, ham, cereal, various bread etc. The tea and coffee is also ordered through the waiter. I opted for scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on an English muffin which was delicious. I'm so sorry but in the wedding excitement I didn't take any photographs!!

"King's Arms Restaurant, a let down on this visit."…read more We are staying at the King's Arms and usually we try the hotel's restaurant, it's a hit and miss affair but worth trying. This was a miss!! There's two of us, and despite this got shown to a rounds lamp table which is only fit for single diner. It's a Tuesday night and the restaurant is less than half full so couldn't work out that mistake, but did ask to be moved to a suitable table for two. Also they seated us next to a loud corner of 20s something, but other diners were seat well away from... So not a good start. Wine selection not great, only few French, odd Italian but loads of new world, which isn't a good sign, but I don't hold new world wines in any regards other than it's a party drink once the good stuff has gone. Good food, really was very good. Seabass was lovely, and the steak fillet was perfect. The only issue is that I had half of plate of packed salad leaf despite ordering mixed vegetables side, so had to move a big pile of salad around to get a few spoonful of veg on my plate. Dodging waitresses elbows was also a downer, got a bit silly that I moved my finished main plate onto a table next to me so I could enjoy an elbow free rest of the evening... Which funny enough didn't happen. So in short a meal short of £100 which was a fiasco.... My ideal restaurant experiences are as much to do with service and environment as much as the quality of the dishes, this failed apart from the dishes.

We both ordered a prawn sandwich and a pint for me and a Spritza for my wife. We were the only diners sitting outside and the food came very quickly. The sandwiches were £4.95 each but I felt OK about that because I guessed, in that location anything 'fishy' would be good. There was a tiny amount of prawns in the centre of my sandwich, they were tiny and in one quarter there was just two. I have never bought such a sad miserably or expensive sandwich and I believe there is just no excuse. This makes the meal in the Carvery at £5.00 look more than inviting! Brian Mitchinson
